JONES OUT IN MOTOWN
Posted by Mike Florio on March 13, 2008, 4:02 p.m.
We’ve gotten confirmation from another source that running back Kevin Jones has been informed by the Detroit Lions that he will be released.
It’s not known whether the move has been made official.
Jones was a first-round pick of the Lions in 2004. A serious foot injury suffered during the 2006 season marred much of the 2007 campaign for him, and we’re told that there was concern that he might not be healthy for the start of the 2008 regular season.
The only other running backs currently on the roster are Brian Calhoun, Aveion Cason, and Tatum Bell.

Strange, they list Tatum Bell as a running back.

I'd give him a look. He'd be a good part of a rotation. Still many questions about his a bility to play though.

Someone will pick him up and pay him more than we need to. With our RB situation in pretty good shape, I don't think we would be picking up a veteran castoff. With the deep RB draft I bet we pick up a mid to late round project.

Looks like its official, hopefully we stay well away from him.

I wouldn't say our running back situation is in good shape. At best its in good shape. Young isn't an everydown back and breaks down, hopefully a full off-season after playing a full NFL season changes that. Henry is having yearly injury problems. Mike Bell likes to fumble and just doesn't give the effort. Andre Hall has the same durability questions as Young. Marquis Weeks is an unknown at this point. Hopefully it all comes to together, but giving Jones a look for a minimum contract would be great. Who knows if he can play by next season and what his price tag will be.

We just signed Travis Henry to a contract extension, Young averaged 5.1 yards a carry for 700+ on the season (and caught 35 balls). Henry will start with Young getting a good amount of carries. And Andre Hall and Mike Bell are great 3rd and 4th backs if anyone goes down. Why pay a veteran starter to come in and compete for bench time with Hall and Bell? Like I said, a mid to late rounder who shows flashes in training camp, hide him on the ps for future or insurance this year.

Exactly. The way I figure it Denver has one spot open for a late round draft pick otherwise they are set.

OK that is BS statement, the kid fumbled once two season ago in AZ and recovered and once on hit in Chi. He also had 8 TD or so his rookie career.

its a shame hes been hurt, every game i watch him play in he is the only player on that lions that plays as hard as he can every play and fight for extra yards EVERY play. which is why he is probably always hurt, but it still sad

It is not.
He put the ball on the ground on his first carry in week 12 as you stated. He put it on the ground in training camp. He gets gased easily and he was moved to fullback. That should tell you everything you need to know. Instead of taking a step up following his rookie season he took a step down. He got beat out be an undrafted rookie free agent. He's a nice guy, but I would take Jones over him in a second provided Jones can play this season.

Dude he got beat out by a player when he got injuried that turned out to favorite of Turner's - Young. He got move to FB, because Shanahan and Turner want to get him on the field not because he sucks. And I wouldn't be surprised at some point he end up back at RB for Denver

I didn't say he sucks, but his performances have lacked luster. If he was better than Young he would be on the field and would not have been moved to fullback. He has a problem with holding onto the ball and he has conditioning problems. Not to mention the rumors of trying to trade him. It doesn't look good for him to even be on the team next season.

Broncos IMO are still searching for the everydown back. The reason Jones won't probably be brought in have nothing to do with our RB situation being so rosy. It has more to do with he would be no better then Henry. If Broncos see a rb in the draft the think is going to be a stud they will probably draft him. I think Broncos would still be interested in WR/RB/LB/DT/OT on the first day of draft. I do think OG/C/FS/SS/DE have a slim chance to none, with QB,FB,TE probably absolutley no way.
They way I see it this team needs another young wr and the 2nd round seems like a good spot for that. I'm not sure what out of the positions of need will be there at 12 in the first. Maybe an OT or a RB. But it seemed to me last yr we lacked playmakers outside of Cutler and Marshall. To me that means recievers and running backs need to be upgraded and I think the Broncos will.

LOL i Will add to your great post by saying we also could draft a dandy RB in the 4th round and save the money on the expensive clunker .

We need a true fullback and two tackles to get us back on track.

If Henry cant stay healthy for a full season, it could be worth it to look at another RB.
