The Kansas City Chiefs actually went out and did something today! They signed a wide receiver, and while it wasn’t A.A. fave D.J. Hackett, I like the kid. Devard Darling wasn’t who I expected, but his signing comes as little surprise given Herm Edwards‘ pre-free agency comments on the type of player the Chiefs were seeking.

Darling, 25, had his best year as a pro in ‘07, and especially came on late for the Baltimore Ravens. He had four catches, 107 yards and a touchdown against the Browns in late November (I remember it well, as I was playing against him in fantasy for some reason). He’s 6-foot-2 (I’ve read 6-foot-1 and 6-foot-3, so we’ll settle in between) and 215 pounds, so he definitely has the size to be a quality No. 2 or 3 WR.

I’ve linked the Star’s article and his Wiki page below, but what you absolutely have to read is this S.I. story about he and his late twin brother, Devaughn, who passed away while they were attending Florida State together (Devard later transferred to Washington State). Both interesting and inspirational, if you ask me. Warning: It’s going to be hard not to root for the kid after reading the article.

Welcome, Devard! Glad to see that the Chiefs aren’t completely asleep at the switch. Oh, and I’m hoping that I can get our Ravens blogger to chime in on Darling either today or tomorrow.

Good pickup IMO. He's a good kid. It sucks that his brother died.
He showed a lot last year. Could be a solid #2 WR in KC. If he can get 3 TD's and 326 receiving yards in Baltimore behind Mark Clayton and Derrick Mason, then I see no reason why he can't get about 500 yards and 5 TD's in KC.

I see one big reason. Brodie Croyle...

Most Ratbird fans expected him not to be the league this season. Say a lot about the state of KC WR corp

So he went from one inept offense to another. All he has done as added depth to their WR core but he wont be as good as K.C Stud thinks he is going to be.

This signing calls for an immediate, substantial raise of ticket price.

Bob's butt is where washed up Chief's linemen, Carl Peterson's sad signings, and underacheiving rookie busts go to die.

I think this signing is a bit better than that. Darling is a young guy with some potential, who flashed some at the end of last season.

I think going by Potential after 3 years is absurd...

I would prefer if he was the #3. I would rather get somebody better for #2.

And how is your WR corps that much better?

Bowe had a much better rookie season than Marshall did. After Marshall the only guy worth a damn that you have is Stokley and he doesn't scare anybody. Whoopty freaking doo.

You serious?

Marshall happened to be the #3 behind potential HOFer Rod Smith and Javon Walker, while Bowe walked into a pile of crap and started Day 1.

You're a tool.

19 catches in four years?! I guess the chefs missed out on the Keary Colbert sweepstakes. :~ohyah!:
