JaMarcus Russell close to 300 pounds

According to SI.com's Don Banks, there are "rumors" that JaMarcus Russell has ballooned to close to 300 pounds since last season ended.

Russell, who coach Lane Kiffin has named the Raiders' starter, had weight issues in college. InsideBayArea.com's Jerry McDonald writes in his blog that no players have actually seen Russell this offseason, so the rumors are hard to confirm. He was fat last year too, though he did slim down by camp. I gotta say unless you play defensive tackle, I find it hard to see how someone who is paid to be a full time athlete can let themselves get fat. It's ridiculous.

It is odd you can make it this far in a field were fitness and athleticism are so important, and be a fat ass. It is hard to figure. Thats why I always loved Romo, McCaffery, Smith, guys like that. Guys who put football first, last, and in the middle. Elway was the same way. This team needs to look at Russell and the sad ass Raiders and realize a few 7-9 seasons is how it starts. You either find some hungry players fast or it can get ugly in a hurry. If Russell turns out to be lazy, and Raiders are pinning hopes on him, and they are already rock bottom, that could really end them for a very long time.

They have signed a slew of players, and I now hate Walker along the same lines as Kennisson. I hope we knock his friggin knee into a black hole and he limps into history a whining complaining 2 yr wonder.

It’s much too early to pass judgment on that selection. Russell is a big talent and was a big playmaker in college, but there are disturbing signs. He reported so overweight that a woman reporter suggested he needed a bra.

At 300 pounds he would be about 30-35 pounds over his listed weight. Not all that much considering his size. I doubt the rumors are true though. IF he is letting himself go it'll be interesting come mid summer.
