With the Broncos filling some of their pressing holes in FA, we don't have the glaring needs in the draft that it looked like we might. The one position that hasn't been addressed is DT. We really need to move up to get that done. Here's how we should do it:
Trade- #12, next year's #2, and a 2008 4th (or Foxworth) for #7
Why? NE needs CB and LB help and the value may not neccesarily be there at #7. At #12, they should be able to get a similar player, while adding another pick to their arsenal next year and a mid-rounder or veteran CB this year.
Trade- If NE wants Foxworth, move one of our 4ths and a 5th to move into the tail-end of round 3. If NE takes a 4th, package Foxworth and a 5th for a 3rd.
The draft:
Rd 1- Sedrick Ellis, DT, USC- He may not have prototypical size, but he has a solid base, good quickness and a lot of experience at the college level. He is the penetrating DT we need and would look great next to Marcus Thomas.
Rd 2- Carl Nicks, OT, Nebraska- This pick is tough and there are a lot of options, but I think it has to be an OT. Nicks, Cherilus, or Baker may slide to this pick and if so, we have to take them. If not, Collins may be an option. Otherwise, trade down, add another mid-rounder and grab Benedict, Greco, or Hills with a later pick. Regardless, we'll take advantage of a strong OL class and add depth at OT.
Rd 3- Jonathan Goff, MLB, Vandy- He may only be a 2-down player, but with Bailey and Williams on the team, he won't need to play in the nickel. He's big, strong, intelligent and a good tackler. He and Niko could have a nice battle for the MIKE in training camp.
Rd 4- Owen Schmitt, FB, W Virginia- A personal favorite who brings attitude to the offense. Enough has already been said about this guy.
Rd 5- Dexter Jackson, WR, Appalachian St- This pick is based more on return abilities. Let him contribute on ST and potentially as a 4th or 5th WR who provides a deep threat.
Rd 7- Durant Brooks, P, Ga Tech- We need a punter, Brooks is the best available.
Rd 7- Taylor Mehlhaff, K, Wisconsin- See Durant Brooks. It's about 50/50 that these guys will be available, so if not, take the best available K/P in round 7.
