View Full Version : CASE CLOSED: Draft Durant Brooks! ... Punters, Kickers?

I'm tired of screwing around with punters ... watching guys we had excel elsewhere, Matt McBriar, Nick Harris, Jason Baker.
Trading back in the first round will give us the luxury of a couple extra picks to address ancillary spots, Owen Schmitt at FB, Dexter Jackson as a PR/KR, maybe a kicker, and DURANT BROOKS. What a stud! Almost half his punts - 68/144 - were Inside the 20, and yet he still averaged over 45 yards both seasons, and he's NEVER had a punt blocked. Ever. Smart, hard worker, and a great character guy whose tutor is Ray Guy.

K and P available in FA.
11. Derrick Frost, P, Redskins. Age: 27.
12. Mike Vanderjagt, K, None. Age: 38.
13. Olindo Mare, K, Saints. Age: 35.
14. Matt Turk, P, Texans. Age: 38.
15. Aaron Elling, K, Bengals. Age: 30.
Not a great crop by any stretch. Denver may actually take a P and a K in the draft. I think I like the strategy of drating a K in the 4th, 5th or 6th and getting a P after the draft is over. So I think we'll sign someone like Matt Turk soonish and then pick up a rook and let them duke it out.
The kickers seem to have three good prospects. Mehlhalf from Wisconsin, Coutou from Ga Tech, and Carmody from Louisville. Is one of these guys better than ther rest? And am I missing anybody? Who would you like to see Denver pick up? Because if our choices are Vanderjagt or Mare we're in trouble.

During the NFL Combine on the NFL ALL Access showed , they passed along a comment from a scout, that said that was "worse class of kicker/punters" in long while. Not the year to be looking for drafted kicker.

Not good. Lets all hope Elam stands down and takes a reasonable contract.

I totally agree on kicker ... not a good crop, and I've argued against drafting Mendenhall as some have suggested ... that's why I agree with CHANGSTER and hope Jason backs off his demands just a bit. I just cannot see Jason Elam wearing a crayon-red and urine-yellow uniform.
But I am TOTALLY sold on DURANT BROOKS ... whatever that scout said about bad kickers, Brooks does not qualify. Look at those numbers! He's the perfect punter in every.single.category. He might not be a kickoff guy, but that's his only shortcoming.
Man, we shouldda drafted Mason Crosby ... :nono: ... Pack got him late late in the 6th. Hell, we couldda moved up for Marcus Thomas for less than we paid. We overpaid based on the chart. We couldda kept a 6th outta that MT trade, and maybe had Mason kickoff only his first year until Jason became a UFA.

Brooks isn't a kickoff guy now, but could he become one?
What's the PK crop for next year looking like? I too hope that Elam backs down. He should retire a Bronco and then take his rightful place in the hall of fame as one of the best kiciker of all time. Him going anywere else is just wrong.
If he does leave, maybe we take a flyer on the idiot kicker for one year.

Brooks isn't a kickoff guy now, but could he become one?
I dunno ... that capsule says he MIGHT not be a kickoff guy because he didn't kickoff in college.
But read those stats ... a ton of punts - 6+ punts per game with a 45+ yard avg both seasons, despite being penalized statistically for nailing almost half of them inside the 20. Let's draft a punter to be a BRONCO FOR LIFE. Don't let the Paul Ernser thing make you gun-shy, Mike ... and if we trade back (maybe with Dallas like montrose suggested) we'll have some extra picks for guys like Schmitt, a PR/KR and Brooks.
Kickoffs is one thing I just don't get ... out of 53 world-class tough guy athletes ... not one of them can consistently kick a stationary, teed-up football 70+ yards with a running start? I'll bet Mike Leach could do it if he practiced, or maybe Mustard, or Sapp? It just doesn't seem alll that "specialized" a skill.
We had a running back kickoff in the 1970s ... Lonnie Perrin.

CASE CLOSED
Interview with DURANT BROOKS from the Combine:
Growing up, who was your favorite NFL player and why?
John Elway because he was one of the best quarterbacks of all time and some people said we look alike.
In college, what player hit you the hardest? Who was the recipient of your best hit?
Since I am a punter, I haven't been hit that much, but a North Carolina player roughed me up on a punt in '06 and it left a bruise.
What TV-show marathon will keep you on the couch all day?
America's funnest home videos; Lost.
What are the five most-played songs in your iPod? What's the one song you hope nobody ever finds out is in your iPod?
Kenny Chesney - Back where I come from, Alabama - Song of the South, Kanye West - Stronger, Linkin Park - in the end, Nickelback - if everyone cared; Enya - Carribean Blue.
What celebrity would play you in the movie version of your life and why?
Mark Wahlberg because he is one of the best actors in Hollywood and he can do any type of movie, from war to sports.
What reality TV show would you like to be on and why?
Survivor. It would be cool to be in the middle of nowhere, competing different challenges. You would find out what you're made of.
What's your proudest moment in football? Proudest moment off the field Averaging 48 yards in my first D1 game against Notre Dame on prime time TV. My off the field moment would have to be when I made dean's list this past year.

Overview
The highest-rated punter entering 2007 did not disappoint, winning the prestigious Ray Guy award as the nation's best. Guy actually knows the Brooks family, and has worked with Durant over the years. Durant's gross average of 45.1 yards per punt was fifth best in the Football Bowl Subdivision, but his 33 inside the 20 (more than half of his 65 attempts) and 21 fair catches were considerably more than the other punters ranked ahead of him.
High School
Helped Tattnall to the 2001 GISA state title . . . Also a basketball standout at Tattnall Square, averaging 18 points a game and setting the school record for career three-pointers.

Analysis
Positives: Able to turn the ball over more often than any other punter in the draft. ... Adept at directional punting to his left or right. ... Can deaden the ball inside the 10-yard line with fair consistency. ... Holds for field goals and extra points, able to rein in poor snaps to get the ball down. ... Never had a punt blocked at Tech.
Negatives: Could achieve more consistent hang-time. ... Can be a two-step punter, but adds an extra half step at times, lengthening his delivery. ... Not tall or owning a great build, he will not threaten to bring down a return man in the open field.

Just a thought; seems to me that fielding two rookie kickers...a rook K AND P...might be too much of a gamble.
Remember, most often, the punter holds for kicks, and while it seems like busy work for a position player, the timing and set are crucial for kickers...probably even more so for a rookie.
...so, I think you're right. Denver will sign a vet kicker and/or punter and likely draft both positions as well.

I am going to vote you off of survivor so you can get your sarcasm and sense of humor back.
I would like to see us draft at least either either a Punter or Kicker this draft.
