Harry finds the animals' remains and recognizes that young Dexter has sociopathic tendencies with an apparent need to kill.[4] Harry decides to train Dexter to channel his violent urges in a "positive" direction: he teaches his adopted son to be a cautious, meticulous and efficient killer and shows him how to leave no clues. Harry also teaches Dexter to live a public life that discourages suspicion, faking emotions and reactions that are expected of him, but which he never actually experiences. Most importantly, Harry gives the boy a system of ethical principles that Dexter comes to call "the Code of Harry." The central tenet of that code is to only kill people who are, themselves, killers. There are other components to the code as well; the first rule is to evade the law and not get caught.
I really like this show as its different then what is normally on the airways. Nowadays everything seems to be a situation comedy, a dumb reality show or a lame drama.
With this show, you are forced to juxtapose Dexter the police analyst with Dexter the serial killer, only to find out that there is a fine line that separates a killer with that of a normal human being.
You are forced to review your moral principles. One the one hand, you know that what he is doing is wrong, but on the other hand, he is only killing those that are deserving of death and you empathize with him. What a great show!
The unique premise of this show is that you are forced to empathize with a serial killer and challenge your value system. Dexter is the good cop/bad cop/judge/jury/executioner all rolled into one character. I find myself saying, "Hey. Wait a minute. I can't feel sorry for a serial killer" or "I never thought a serial killer would have a code of honour".
The "sunny" backdrop of Miami also breaks from the usual dark, gritty crime dramas.
Great plotline. Great characters (except for the sister who isn't entirely believable as a cop).
