Iowa GOP Congressman Says al-Qaida Would Celebrate Obama Victory in Presidential Race

An Iowa Republican congressman said Friday that terrorists would be "dancing in the streets" if Democratic candidate Barack Obama were to win the presidency.

Rep. Steve King based his prediction on Obama's pledge to pull troops out of Iraq, his Kenyan heritage and his middle name, Hussein.

"The radical Islamists, the al-Qaida ... would be dancing in the streets in greater numbers than they did on Sept. 11 because they would declare victory in this war on terror," King said in an interview with the Daily Reporter in Spencer.

King said his comments were not meant to demean Obama but to warn how an Obama presidency would look to the world.

"His middle name does matter," King said. "It matters because they read a meaning into that."

The Illinois senator, born in Hawaii to a white Kansas woman and a Kenyan man, is a Christian and has said he has little connection to the Islamic religion, though he acknowledges he spent part of his childhood in largely Muslim Indonesia.

In criticizing King, Obama spokesman Tommy Vietor said, "These comments have no place in our politics." He called on John McCain, the apparent Republican nominee, to "repudiate them like he has previous offensive comments from his supporters."

Last month, McCain denounced an introduction from Cincinnati talk-show host Bill Cunningham, who referred to Obama three times as "Barack Hussein Obama."

(This version CORRECTS the story by omitting that King noted the name was a reminder of Iraq's former leader, which he did not.)

uhhh NO! That isn't his platform although that is what the reps would like you to believe.

To be more specific, he's talked specifically about military operations in Pakistan should Pakistan be unwilling to go after important targets themselves (such as Bin Laden).

Furthermore he's talked about use of force as a means of last resort for purposes of security. Generally he contrasts that directly with the invasion of Iraq in which he makes the case (as he did when the whole thing went down) that it was an operation with no clear security benefit (only a vague notion that Saddam might be dangerous at some point).

So, yes he's talking about the use of diplomacy as a first and main tool in dealing with security issues. He's completely against using force as a means of nation building. He's completely against the use of force in a pre-emptive fashion with no clear, imminent, and credible threat against the United States.

He's not a pacifist nor is he weak. He's measured, poised, and strategic. Something we've been sorely missing these last few years. Its a level of nuance that GOP hardliners, who only talk in one-liners, seem to have a hard time grasping.

CIA attacks inside pakistan all the time, but if Obama thinks he could do more without Pakis approval he may be kidding himself. You can't push around countries that have a nuclear bomb as easily as you can one that doesn't. Operations inside pakistan are a very touchy subject and I don't think Obama has a clue to what he was saying. First you would never say you were doing it in the first place. I thought that comment was foolish, but I do like some of Obamas ideas. I just think he has a lot to learn about the nuances of foriegn policies.

I'm not saying Bush was great at it, he didn't have the experience either. McCain and Clinton to me are the best choices.
