The Broncos currently have 64 players on the payroll for 2008 with a total cap charge of approx $113.3m. Approx $29m is tied up in dead cap space.
So somewhere around $4m under the estimated 2008 cap.

The estimated salary cap for 2009 should jump by another $7m or thereabouts to $123m. An approximate estimate currently has the Broncos at $93.0m with 51 players under contract. So approx $30m under the cap for 2009 at present.

The more startling issue in terms of the Broncos finances this season are the differences in bonus payouts.

2006 $44m
2007 $73m-including: Bailey $5.5m, Bly $7.4m, Cutler $12.3m, Graham $10.2m Henry $6.1m, Walker $10m, Lepsis $3.2m, Moss $3.2m
2008 $53.6m to date based on most SB's hitting this season. These figures include Bly $9m, Graham $5m, Moss $4.5m, Stokley $5m, B Bailey $4.3m, Robertson $3.1m, Royal $1.85m, Colbert $2.5, Koutouvides $2m.
2009 $24m allocated thus far the majority belongs to DJ Williams $10m (estimate), Robertson $3m and Bailey $3m roster bonus.

More updates will follow shortly including cap room for 2009 and cash spent comparisons with other franchises for 2008 and comparing previous years

The above information is as accurate as possible utilising resources such as USA Today salary database, NFLPA, Rotoworld, Mile Hile Report, Denver Post, RMN, CBS, PFW etc.

Cap room is approximately up to date as the RMN confirmed that the Broncos were just over $15m under the cap prior to the Boss Bailey/Marlon McCree/Marquand Manuel signings

Cap Room = $5.2m as per PFW figures on 26/08/08 prior to the roster cutdown from 80 and Holland's trade.

Rep, great work.

Jesus Mike, a fourth of your cap is tied up in Dead Money? No wonder Bowlen is pissed at you.

Ins: Building through the draft, free agency frugalty.

Outs: Mike's carte blanche and nutsack.

Eddie is the Man!

Is our dead cap camparable to the rest of the league or just Washington?

Without considering the current pre/post June 1st designations, how much dead money comes off next year?

In my estimate there's no dead money in 2009. I have it all coming off this year. No reason to split it unless we're gonna bring in 1 or 2 players with high cap hits in 2008 and that looks highly unlikely at this point.

My thought too -- hard to push for contention without 25 million that could have bought two superstars...

I wonder how we stackup to other teams in that department?

In my estimate there's no dead money in 2009. I have it all coming off this year. No reason to split it unless we're gonna bring in 1 or 2 players with high cap hits in 2008 and that looks highly unlikely at this point.

Wow, with no dead money next year and an estimated $40 million in cap money, we should be in very good shape next offseason. I'd expect most of our young core to be locked up with a series of extensions and we should still have money to play with. There really won't be many big decisions on veterans contracts next year either. The only one I saw would be Hamilton.

so does dead money mean that its money that counts against the cap in bonuses but that never got paid out?

so does dead money mean that its money that counts against the cap in bonuses but that never got paid out?

Dead money is the cap hit for bonus money of players who are no longer with the team. Signing bonus money is pro-rated throughout the life of the contract in the NFL. Dead money is the pro-rated share of the salary cap that is unaccounted for when a player's contract terminates early. The "dead money" is accelerated into the cap figures for the upcoming year and hits as a lump sum (it can be spread over 2 years for players designated as June 1st cuts).

As an example, if player A signs a 5yr deal with a $10million signing bonus, his pro-rated bonus is $2million/yr. If he's cut after 2 years, only $4 million of his signing bonus has been accounted for on the salary cap. The remaining $6million would count against the team's cap as "dead money" in year 3.

Yes. The split would be 1/3 hitting in 2008 and 2/3 hitting in 2009. Why would we do that though??? We've already made it clear we're not going to go over the top with FA this season.

A lot of people have asked if that amount is typical for dead money around the league. The answer, sadly, appears to be no:

http://www.mlive.com/lions/index.ssf/2008/04/dead_money_eating_into_lions_c.html

"With $15.2 million in 'dead money' hitting their salary cap, the Lions are in worse shape cap-wise than the majority of other NFL teams. In each of the past two seasons, the average of dead money per club was just less than $10 million."

15.2 a lot more than other teams, eh? 22.45 for the Broncos... well that sucks.

Like Eddie Mac, I'm not sure if Lepsis' money counts against the cap because he retired. But that seems the most likely place to regain about 5 million of that.

Great job sir.

I got some initial info and quoted the Mile High Report as a source but that hasn't been updated at all this offseason apart from pure estimates on Engelberger and Ekuban's cap hits. Neezer only got a deal worth just over $1m and they have him down for a $2.34m cap hit??? A lot of the dead money is also wrong on that printout.

To the Mods

This thread needs to be updated all season round and for seasons to come, so it needs to be kept up top (Stickied) I can change the title if need be.

Everytime a player is activated from the practice squad it affects the cap, everytime a player hits IR and a new one is brought in it affects the cap.

I will be updating these things as and when they occur and the info is available to me via NFLPA.

e.g the recent trade, cuts, additions and Practice squads have not been updated yet because the contract info isn't available yet.

Thanks

Great work, looks like that takes a lot of research.

Can't say I'm overly educated on the subtleties of how the cap works and how much money we'll have available moving forward.

Care to give us a quick gist on how you think we stand EddieMac? Will we have the neccessary money to resign Marshall, Scheffler, Dumervil and others like them if they keep producing, or are we still going to suffer a little bit over the next few years for our past FA blunders?

I'm from the North, just 5 miles from the coast-Portrush/Portstewart and the same distance from the famous Bushmills Whiskey distillery.

We're looking pretty good IMO, a lot better than we've looked in a long time cap wise.

At the end of the day though that isn't really the issue anymore. If you look within the initial post you'll see emphasis on the amount of cash/bonuses Bowlen has dished out in the last 2 seasons and money set aside for future years. It has declined considerably from 06. IMHO the reason for that is Denver haven't been putting out a competitive team and no playoffs so Bowlen wants Shanahan to focus mainly on the draft from now on and cut out the overpriced acquisitions such as Walker and Henry.

I'm pretty sure though that we'll be able to afford new deals for all the players you've mentioned plus Champ Bailey if Mike Shanahan feels they are value for money and wants to keep them around, e.g There's plenty of execs in the game who dont think Dumervil's a top DE nor does he deserve to be paid like one. So we'll see what happens with that issue. The development of Crowder and Moss could also come into play here.

Time is also in Denver's hands here with the uncapped year coming so in effect the likes of Marshall, Dumervil, Kuper and Scheffler cant go anywhere anyway until they have 6 seasons under their belt or indeed a new CBA is agreed.

DJ was another matter altogether because his final year voided and there was a clause within his contract stating that the Broncos could not franchise him, so a deal needed to be done there if they wanted to keep him.

I have a slightly diffrent take on that. I think Den was spending money in the past on the assumption that they are close to championship and one or two pieces could push them over the hump. Right now they are rebuillding and they will start spending again once they get closer to the elite status.

That is the cap hit. Jay's contract is longer and his signing bonus was proated over the life of the contract. I'm sure it was smaller at the begining and it will become a larger share as Denver nears the end of it.

I don't think Abdullahs salary is guaranteed, he is not a veteran since he had to go through waivers when he was cut. So his salary shouldn't be guaranteed, I think you need more than 4 years in the league for that top kick in.

You're quite right. Updated accordingly.

Anybody have any inside info on how Abdullah's star fell so fast? Our backup safeties were both waived outta the league a month ago ... if Hamza can't beat out Calvin Lowry or Vernon freaking Fox for a roster spot, something really really changed.

And how is it neither Roderick Rogers nor Josh Barrett can beat out either of these guys? Our nickel and dimes are Paymah and JMFW, so what would be so wrong with one of these kids at least on special teams?

WHy? They should only use it for resigning The players they already have. Marshall, Kuper would be a good start.

High priced FAs aren't worth it.

Build through the draft.

The main reason is that we only have about $5m in dead cap room for 2009 as opposed to $30m for 2008.

Getting rid of players like Javon Walker and Travis Henry whilst replacing them with rookies saved the team a fortune long-term.

Eddie, Tom Nalen's contract is over, and all his money is off the books now, right? Is there any chance at all he might come back?

I agree. Contracts and money come up a lot. It is an easy reference if we knew exactly where it was. Not many are stickied and this is like a reference, thesauraus, encyclopedia, etc.

Looking at Boss Bailey contract makes me puke. Not one poster ever talkes about at least getting him back from injury in 2009. Waste of cash and I always wonder if we brought him in on Champ's request/demand.

The reason is because we haven't spent money on top free agents the last couple of years. I wonder why we are 24-24 over the last 3yrs?

Makes me wonder if we weren't spending money before this season started because Bowlen knew he was axing Shanahan along time ago.

If the Broncos cut Bly then how much cap space would the Broncos lose. Also how much cap space would the Broncos gain by cutting Koutounidos and Engleburger. I could see the Broncos cutting all 3 players.

I am guessing that we will see some re-structures as well I just cant imagine that we will take the cap hits that Graham and Bly generate. I also would not be surprised if we did something with Boss's deal although he will probably go Pup to start the season I dont know if the NFL does anything like the NBA where you can apply to have an injured players cap # negated if they are going to miss the season.

This should be a sticky I refer to it for all of my contract questions.
Good Job Eddie!

Good Job Eddie! Maybe the broncos should cut Bailey and go with Woodard or Winborn at the Sam. I think he might be do a 3 million dollar roster bonus.

I assume you mean for the 08 draft...this link is where I go. I'm not sure the 09 is even set yet with the playoffs still ongoing/starting.

Shame on me, I agree with this. Bailey missed too many games this year. I also think having his brother on the team encouraged him to miss games (ie. Boss is always hurt).
