Playing elsewhere is one of Lynch's options for 2008

INDIANAPOLIS — There is a chance veteran safety John Lynch doesn't retire, yet doesn't play with the Broncos in 2008.

The Broncos have offered Lynch a revised contract for the upcoming season. Lynch has three options: return to Denver, retire or decline the new contract and sign elsewhere.

Lynch has one season left on his contract at $3 million. The Broncos are offering a reduced deal. The two sides are continuing to negotiate and the talks remain amicable.

Lynch, 36, is highly regarded at Dove Valley, and the Broncos want him back.

The situation likely will be resolved by March 4, when Lynch is due a roster bonus. Regardless of whether Lynch returns or not, the safety is expected to be a priority position for Denver in free agency.

Looking at Rogers.

According to two sources close to the situation, Denver is in the exploration process of looking at Detroit defensive tackle Shaun Rogers. Lions general manager Matt Millen said Friday he would listen to offers for Rogers, who has been seeking a trade. At least a handful of teams are expected to be in play for him.

Denver long has been an admirer of Rogers, who last season had one of his better games against the Broncos. The Broncos are looking for help at defensive tackle, which may be their greatest area of need along with a safety. Denver could look at defensive tackle Rod Coleman, who recently was cut by Atlanta.

Walker update.

Kennard McGuire, who represents Denver receiver Javon Walker, had a meeting Friday with the Broncos to hash out Walker's situation. Denver is expected to trade or release Walker.

Tampa Bay is among the teams showing interest in Walker. The Jets, who could make linebacker Jonathan Vilma available, also could be in play for Walker. McGuire made it clear Walker is healthy enough to play in 2008.

Any deal involving Walker likely would involve a conditional draft pick. If he's not traded by March 4, Denver likely would cut Walker, who is due $5.4 million in bonuses this year. Deals can't be finalized until the new league season starts Friday.

Receivers coach update.

Denver has interviewed four candidates for the receivers coaching job. The Broncos may interview more candidates before making a hire in a couple of weeks. The team is looking for a coach to help in the wake of Jeremy Bates' promotion to passing game coordinator.

Denver has interviewed Jedd Fisch (formerly of Baltimore), LSU receivers coach D.J. McCarthy (coached Brandon Marshall at Central Florida), Alabama State receivers coach Reggie Barlow and Denver offensive quality control coach Joe Baker. He was the team's linebackers coach last year. Barlow no longer is a candidate.

Linebacker talk.

The Broncos are considering moving D.J. Williams from middle linebacker to weakside linebacker if they find a middle linebacker they like.

With a need for another starter — Ian Gold is likely to be cut — Denver is open-minded to finding the best fit and then adjusting from that point. The Broncos liked Zach Thomas, but talks ended before he signed with Dallas on Saturday.

Footnotes.

Travis Henry's base salary was slashed to $1 million a year, but the Denver running back does have incentives based on yardage where he can make up parts of the five-year, $22.5 million deal he signed last year. . . . Offensive tackle Erik Pears signed his exclusive rights free agency tender. . . . Tight end Stephen Alexander is expected to soon file his retirement papers. . . . The team is making progress in contract talks with place-kicker Jason Elam and defensive end John Engelberger. . . . If Denver pursues a veteran punter, Matt Turk is a possibility.

Marshall Faulk can be blamed for this.

He suggested the idea to Lynch at the Pro Bowl, continuing his Vendetta against the Broncos.

If he left Denver, Tampa Bay would be the place i would most like to see him.

It is a possibility that the Broncos would cut him. A POSSIBILITY. It's also possible that the Broncos would cut Cutler. I'm not worried.

Easy come, easy go. That article didnt say anything that wasnt already known. All it really did was look at the possibilities and point out the one that is least discussed (Lynch playing elsewhere). It didnt even say how likely that is though. Fluff really.

Also, I dont know how much of its truth or his own conjecture but he really likes throwing out injury prone LBs as guys we are (or might be) interested in. Thomas, Vilma...? Who does he think will play LB when Vilma is injured?

seems like it would be foolish for Tampa to say he's washed up, cut him, then bring him back for his last yr in the NFL. Not saying it won't happen just that it would show what a mistake it was to let him go. I guess it would sort of be like Shannon Sharpe leaving then coming back to finish up in Denver.

I hadn't read this before. I thought it was a good deal slashing his bonus, even better.

A class guy but he won't be much of a loss on the field.

I don't think he goes back to Tampa Bay. If they cut him I see him playing in San Diego. A stacked team that might be able to make a SB run and its his home town. But I see him coming back. The one I am worried about is Jason Elam.

Strange a deal hasn't already been worked out, I have an odd feeling he may be gone.

That's funny Klis considering Travis' 2008 base salary was only $730k before he renegotiated that deal.

I see it mentioned RFA tenders but I never saw what our guys were tendered at, anyone got that info? I'd like to see if they proposed one that'll be favorable for someone to sign Foxworth from...

I think San Diego is a real possibility, too. It's his hometown and the Chargers are contenders... Plus they need at least one more player at safety, and with no 2nd, 3rd, or 4th round draft picks this year, it makes sense to address the need with a low cost free agent or trade guy.

As far as trades go, Lorenzo Neal is available. At his age, I sort of doubt that AJ Smith would be totally adverse to trading him within the division.

I still can't believe people are actually giving Lynch this kind of respect. Hes a great guy but his playing time and skills are diminishing severely. good luck in SanDiego or tampa, lets draft the future and start rebuilding. At long last we are finally hearing the movement of DJ back to the spot he belongs, I really hope we can find a monster MLB from somewhere. Hopefully Shanny can get Rogers for a song but I'm afraid he'll put our draft at risk. I'd really like to see Clady or Williams (OT) drafted in the first round.

Shanny always says letting Shannon go after 1999 was one of the hugest mistakes he ever made.

He obviously ate his crow and let Shannon end it the way it should, as a Denver Bronco, for Shannon will and always was a Bronco, never a Ratbird (in fact i dont remember if Shannon was even in the NFL from 2000-2001, i erased that part of my memory).

Gruden and Allen already let Sapp retire as a freaking Faider, if they have the opportunity to make it right with Lynch, then they should. Lynch, despite his years here, will and always was a Tampa Bay Bucaneer.

I honestly don't feel Lynch is a factor anymore. His leadership is important but his range sure isn't very good anymore. I think whatever happens it's not going to make a huge difference for Broncos. We aren't contenders this next year either way.
