Bolts' Gates leaning toward surgery

SAN DIEGO (AP) -- Chargers Pro Bowl tight end Antonio Gates is leaning toward having surgery to repair the dislocated left big toe that slowed him during the playoffs.

According to various reports out of Indianapolis, site of the NFL Scouting Combine, Gates said he'll decide by Wednesday whether to have surgery. Gates was at the combine to meet with medical specialists.

"There's a higher chance I'm going to have surgery," Gates told reporters in Indianapolis.

Chargers general manager A.J. Smith and coach Norv Turner didn't return phone calls seeking comment.

Gates was hurt in a wild-card playoff win over Tennessee. He was limited in San Diego's win over Indianapolis and the AFC championship game loss to New England.

Gates is one of three Chargers stars who were injured during the playoffs.

Running back LaDainian Tomlinson sprained his left knee in the win over the Colts and aggravated it early in the Patriots game, then sat out the remainder of that game even though the team announced to the media that he could return.

Quarterback Philip Rivers tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee against the Colts, had arthroscopic surgery on it the next day and then played against the Patriots. Rivers had reconstructive surgery Jan. 23.Gates and Tomlinson both pulled out of the Pro Bowl because of their injuries.

Didn't realize that about Rivers!

Is it just me or is Tomlinson being a very piss-poor Barry Sanders?...

why the long wait?

From what I gathered, the doctors initially thought that it would heal on its own.

Why? He did what was best for the team by sitting out.

Yeah why not have the surgery already done? Not good for the Chargers IMO to have 3 key players all rehabbing in the offseason. They are talented and probably can get them all healthy by start of year, but I think it does hurt the offseason program when the QB can't really go full speed.

But thats not what the team said. They said he was cleared to play. Thats what is getting people talking. Myself, I don't think its as big a story as we make it out to be.

The part that sucks is that Gates got injured when a play was already done and overwith. He had caught the ball but was laying on the ground where he could've been tapped but was instead dog piled and hammered. Now he's got to have surgery and rehab... Why don't the referees use "unnecessary roughness" for what it is rather than waiting for the league to tell them when something is allowed to be included? If the ROUGHNESS is UNNECESSARY then it should be a valid call. A player that's already given up on the play and is waiting to be tagged should not be fair game for any shots you can give him.

Now if rivers would have followed that example you might have won. :wiggle:

He only won the previous game in convincing fashion just to allow your team to the next round but it was much better to let limpy Mclimperson throw all over the field all day (but not into the endzone) i do believe volek could have punched it in since he was a bit more mobile that braveheart. (and we know what happened to braveheart in the end)

Too bad Plummer is gone, otherwise you might actually be in the playoffs. :wiggle:

He obviously felt he wasn't ready to play otherwise he would gone back in. Heck he did go back in for a bit after he reinjured his leg.

People like angryllama are making big deals out of nothing especially when LT has played injured before. It's just legs are everything to a runningback.
