He, along with Lynch, looks the type. If Keith Burns can.....right?

Plus I think Rod's been around as a wide receivers mentor the past couple of years anyway. What do you think?

I hope so. He's a great leader and role model. He's the type of guy that you want around young receivers.

Uh, no, he's done, has been since last year.

EDIT: After reading the actual topic correctly I don't know what kind of coach he'd be but he probably deserves a shot at it if he wants to.

In my madden '07 game, I had a Bronco's franchise going through 2015 and he had become a coach in the game. I mention this, of course, because everything that happened in my game is coming true in real life...well, except for all the Superbowls and MVPs for Cutler and the receiver who had 29 TDs, but whatever, everything else!

Why would Rod want to come back to the grind that is NFL coaching??? Let the guy move on and work one of the 20 business he running.

Foneco forgive me for saying this, and please don't misconstrue it, I love Rod Smith, love what he's done for the team, love what he stands for, how he plays the game and how he's carried himself, but I don't think he'd make a good coach. At least not from the stand point of developing young receivers, he'd be great as a role model for conditioning.
Hasn't anyone noticed that until Brandon Marshall, we NEVER developed a single even remotely serviceable wide receiver? I mean the list is atrocious! Off the top of my head:
Marcus Nash, Lelie, Madise, Triandos Luke, Hixon, Brian Clark, Todd Devoe, Chris Cole, that white guy with bleached hair (not Nate Jackson), Darius Watts.
I mean i'm sure most of those guys were made of fail in the first place, but like, where is the evidence that Rod could help develop young receivers?
I am sad now for having spoken ill of Rod :(

There was article in either ESPN MAG or RMN/ Denver Post that talk about his off the field work, things I remember off the top of my head - construction business, a cleaning business, etc. Basically 5 to 6 things that he has with his family and partners for life after football

If he wants to, sure, but its such a grind...plus, just because he's a good player doesnt necessarily mean he'll be a good coach

No but this is a guy that one would think knows what makes a player good.

If I were Rod I would not take the D-coordinator job.

He makes enough from Blackjack Pizza to live comfortably. He should retire and enjoy life for a while. Then after he has been out of it and has relaxed see what kind of fire he has in him for the game.

Haven't both Rod and John Lynch said that they wanted to spend more time with their kids...a coaching job in the NFL isn't going to let them do that.

Only if he wants to. Rod always struck me as someone who kind of led by example. He obviously has the work ethic to coach, which is where most people drop off to begin with. The question is does he have the talent and desire to be one? Being a great player doesn't make you a good coach. Coaching ranks are littered with the failed coaching careers of former players who thought they could coach and found that it's harder than it appears.

He should come back and continue to be a mentor to the young Marshall.

He can still mentor Marshall and not be a coach. He can be an adviser.

Are we really sure Rod was Marshall's mentor in the first place? I'd like to think so, but I saw absolutely no indications of it at all.

Where's he at now. Remember how hot his girlfriend was? He was a decent return man but a crap WR

I saw all kinds of indications, most notably that rod seemed to always be in his ear on the sidelines, and marshall seemed to be listening intently.

as for the rest, i think rod should do whatever he wants, and i think the team OWES it to him to allow him to do whatever he wants.
if he wants to try and come back (something tells me he STILL wants to play) then the team should give him the opportunity.
if he wants to coach, a spot should be cleared for him.
if he wants to ride off into the sunset, then the waiting period should be waived (for only the second time) and he should be IMMEDIATELY placed in the ring of fame.

I think he is the reason Marshall did so good.

That really unfair statement, the guys are professionals and one that drove Marshall to have good season was Marshall. Smith gave advice I am sure about what to look for on field, but it was Marshall that took on mantle of being the #1 WR and no one else.

Works for me if Rod wants to be at home more.
