View Full Version : My 2/15 mock...what do you think?
Might as well put this out there. Im kind of coming around on the idea of trading down a little bit. Id really like McFadden or Mendenhall but someone (at Broncosforums)pointed out that Charles might be quite serviceable if he were to put on 10 pounds. Ive thought about it and I agree. I think he was just beginning to scratch the surface at Texas and at 6'1", I think he could put on 10 pounds without it really slowing him down that much if at all.

I really like the jamal Charles pick. He really turned it on in the second half of the season, so much so the horns reworked the offense around him.
i think this looks great...but it's very unrealistic to try and predict trades. The trades make sense but I just think it's impossible to guess what deals will go down.
As for the players I really like all the picks!! Nice work. First four picks are awesome...everything on top of that is gravy.

I am most intrigued about Lofton as a MLB pick. There are a few knocks on him, but the guy was a machine this year - and he has a mean streak. I would rather stick with Clady (if available) in round 1, then Lofton in round 2. But, hey, if our guys think they can find a good OT in the first 3 rounds, so be it.

Your trades are fun and it would make this draft more interesting. It appears you put some decent effort into this as well. With a few exceptions you seem to have a decent idea of where these guys will be available. There are a few I would say are reaches, but I don't see any that are wishful thinking.
I'm not in love with only one tackle. Especially when that one tackle is a right tackle that has already been in bar fights off the field. Left tackle is one area I could live with reaching on.
Curtis Lofton is an intriguing choice. I like how fast and physical he is. He plays with a very high motor and seems to wrap up well. I'm sure some Sooner fans could give us more insight.
Jamaal Charles is pretty underwhelming to me. I don't see him do anything that makes me think he's going to be that awesome.
Trevor Laws is a fun choice because he kind of reminds me of Dumervil as an undersized player that plays at a high level and produces regularly. He's a good character guy too. I could live with him, though he might slip to the second day.
I think it's intriguing that you feel Woodyard would make a decent safety. I give you props for original thinking, but I don't see anything to suggest he could make a move there. I didn't watch him very much but I thought him to be a later round guy, so maybe you are anticipating a stellar performance at the combine? It would be odd to take him there and then ask him to switch positions.
Jordy Nelson is a great choice. He fills two needs at receiver and special teams. His quickness is really impressive for someone his size and I like how big and strong he is.
I really don't like the idea of trading for Shaun Rodgers. I want to get away from having any lazy dudes on the team.
Dyzon might not get drafted at all. Did you want him to play Sam? If so, he's way too small there. Please no more tiny linebackers!
I don't know anything about your last two guys. I guess that's why they're in the seventh round!
Good job, though. I'd like to know why you made each selection and what you think each of these guys brings to the table.

Brian Witherspoon played CB at Stillman (AL) and its estimated he runs a 40 in the low 4.2s. I think his speed alone makes him worth taking in the 7th.
Paul Raymond is a smallish WR that could stretch the field some and possibly catch some passes in the slot. His 40 is estimated to be in the 4.3s.
I got Dizon as someone who can provide some depth, special teams help and eventually competition.
BTW, actually Woodyard has played SS before.

Nice draft. Not so sure about bringing Big Lazy in here though via trade.

I just want to hedge our bets as well as add depth. Alternatively, if we were not to trade for Rogers, Id like to sign that DT from SF. A fourth round pick wouldnt hurt too much for someone like Rogers. Thats about where Okam is slotted to go and Id rather have Rogers, I think.

So would I personally but I want the Shaun Rogers who wants to prove his ability, not the lazy **** most Lions fans are beginning to hate.

Following your trades; I would take Pat Smith at #29.

can you grade each of these prospects on the following scale:
This player has a "chip-on-the-shoulder" mentality to playing pro football:
1= disagree strongly
2= disagree
3= neutral
4= agree
5= strongly agree
achievers and over-achievers seem to have this mentality. from rod smith to elvis dumervil they have something to prove.

OK, I decided to rework it. Someone asked a very valid question which was why SF would want to move up to 12. In looking at their needs its basically a T, a WR, and DT. So to make it work more I threw in Javon Walker and added in their 6th Rd pick. Also, that meant I wouldnt be able to trade with Buffalo into the third rd since Javon was part of that trade so I traded with Miami, who needs CBs and used a future pick for that. So basically, I have our 2009 3rd and 4th Rd picks going elsewhere but after a season like this past one, this is kind of an all chips to the middle of the table draft. Besides, maybe we could trade someone or trade down to get those back next year. Whatever, the case, I think this scenario is much more agreeable to SF.
(1)29. RT- Gosder Cherilous (traded #12 & Javon Walker to SF for 29th, 39th, and 165th)
(2)39. MLB-Curtis Lofton

(3)64. DT-Trevor Laws (traded Foxworth and 2009 3rd)
(4)104. S-Wesley Woodyard

(4)115. DT-trade for Shaun Rogers with Detroit

(6)165.
(7)202. WR-Paul Raymond

I havent decided on 165 yet.
and it's still a sick draft! nice work lex. picks 1-4 just get me soo pumped up.

Thanks. Its pretty much the same except I gave a mid round pick for 2009 and acquired a 6th and moved up about 10 spots in the third from my one. Its the same players except whoever is taken in the 6th.

Cherilous is okay I guess, definitely ok for a RT, I'd prefer that if we used a first (even a late one in your mock), it would be for a LT prospect, such as Baker (I know he isnt a great run blocker, but I think we're transitioning to more of a passing team) or Otah, but in the late first, as I said, I'd be ok with Cherilous. I have not watched Lofton too much this year so I can't really express a viewpoint on him. Charles certainly has the speed, but I would prefer Ray Rice at that spot, better vision and more power, I think he'd be perfect for us in the 2nd. I'm ok with Laws, unfamiliar with Woodyard. I like the Nelson pick a whole lot, although I think it might be slightly wet dreamish to think he'll be there at 113, I expect him to go around 20 picks earlier. I'd rather not trade for Rogers. He's more in the fatass mold and we're going away from that now (although he did have something like 7 sacks this year which is impressive), plus I don't think we can afford it either from a salary POV (even though DET would be eating the bonus acceleration). Re: Dizon...in the abstract, he's worth a 5th, but you drafted Lofton high, which tells me that you think DJ is going back to WLB (which I agree will happen), and he isnt going anywhere anytime soon (nor should he, he's the 2nd best player on our defense in my admittedly biased view), so where is Dizon going to play? He's too light to be a Sam, and way too slow to be even a backup Will. I suppose its good depth. I'd rather take Glenn Sharpe in the 7th as the CB. He's got an injury history to be sure (very, very unlucky kid after going through "the play", but he can ball, a real sleeper).

Im going with the premise that the Shanahan is intent on giving Harris a shot at left tackle and possibly moving Pears back there too.
Charles certainly has the speed, but I would prefer Ray Rice at that spot, better vision and more power, I think he'd be perfect for us in the 2nd.
Rice would leave too many long runs on the table. And before arriving at this point I considered whether Charles is more like Portis or Bell, and in looking at how he came on this year, I think there is cause for optimism. I think he is physical enough and down the stretch Texas relied on him for a lot carries, so Im also less worried about him carrying the load. And its not like he never ran inside either.
I'm ok with Laws, unfamiliar with Woodyard. I like the Nelson pick a whole lot, although I think it might be slightly wet dreamish to think he'll be there at 113, I expect him to go around 20 picks earlier.
A lot will depend on 40 times at the combine. Nelson has longer speed but Im not so sure he'll break a 4.45 like a lot of WRs probably will.
Woodyard was converted from SS to LB a couple of years ago but is better suited to play safety even though he did reasonably well at the senior bowl. He can run in the 4.4s and by everything Ive read is a smart player. Alternatively, I would consider ZBikowski here but I like Woodyard more.
I'd rather not trade for Rogers. He's more in the fatass mold and we're going away from that now (although he did have something like 7 sacks this year which is impressive), plus I don't think we can afford it either from a salary POV (even though DET would be eating the bonus acceleration).
Fair enough. Okam should be available there too. Or we could maybe sign that polynesian dude from SF who is a FA.

Absolutely correct. I see Lofton MLB/Williams WLB as a better option than Williams at mike combined with the other OLBs.

I just think Dizon is the better value in the 5th. I think he can help more in STs and provide depth.

You have alot of projects.
Woodyard will be a 3 year project. i would venture to guess.
Dizon i think he can play WLB in the pros. but i think he is gonna be a project although i like it. Guy just has a nose for the ball.
I am not really enthused with about taking a MLB. at least this year.
DJ is above average at MLB. and we can still find a decent OLB in the 3 or 4 round i we were to land your picks i would go
1. Simms.
2. Baker
2. Ali Highsmith
3. Kevin Smith
4. frank okam
4. Marcus griffin
4. Peyton Hills
5. Dizon
7 Punter
Sign a FA wideout, OLB
