Characters:
Nikolai "Niko" Bellic - Eastern European, between 28 and 32 years of age and has been persuaded to come to Liberty City by his cousin Roman who is living the 'American Dream'.It is later revealed that these are lies to hide Roman's own failures.Niko is revealed to be guilty of previous criminal acts in his life, such as killing, selling and smuggling people.Throughout the story,Niko is looking for someone and will stop at nothing to find him.
Roman Bellic - Roman is Niko's cousin who has lived in Liberty City for 15 years. Roman claims to be living the "American Dream" and that he has two women, four hot tubs and fifteen sports cars, and four extra large army bases but in reality owns a gritty taxi firm in the heart of the city.He is also heavily in debt with various figures around the city
Elizabeta - She has been a very successful drug dealer in Bohan for over a decade now, mostly because she knows how to keep a low profile with Liberty City’s finest. However she knows an upcoming drug crackdown is going to make her life very difficult and with her own narcotic use spiraling out of control she’s becoming increasingly paranoid and delusional.
"Little" Jacob Spliff" - He is a Caribbean arms dealer who lives in Dukes and sells Niko weapons out of the trunk of his car. He and Roman are good friends
Location & Setting:
Grand Theft Auto IV takes place in a redesigned Liberty City consisting of five boroughs; four of the boroughs of New York City and New Jersey. Broker is the equivalent of Brooklyn, Queens is Dukes, the Bronx is Bohan, Manhattan is Algonquin, and New Jersey is Alderney (after the Channel Island of the same name). A Staten Island-esque area will not be featured in the game for the reason that Rockstar Games believes it would not be fun to play there. Dan Houser states that there would not be any "dead spots" or "irrelevant space" within Liberty City such as the wide open deserts in "Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas".
The total area of the map is smaller than Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, but the new rendition of Liberty City will be far more detailed and is the largest individual city in the Grand Theft Auto series.
"to get from one side of the new and improved Liberty City to the other will take you at least an hour."
Features:
After the initial load sequence, there are no loading occurrences when entering/exiting buildings or crossing islands.
"you can basically play the game from beginning to end without a single load screen."
The faster the player taps 'A' , the faster Niko runs. He does not appear to become exhausted.
Stealing a parked car can no longer be done simply by opening the door and driving off. Now, it involves Niko approaching the car, breaking the glass, and hotwiring it; only then can he use it. The way Niko enters the car would look different each time depending on where and how he is in relation to the car.
All cars feature a standard GPS device while more expensive vehicles have voice-navigation GPS.
Car damage physics have been greatly improved. When major collisions on motorbikes occur, the player's helmet is likely to fall off. Niko can lose health if he crashes. Vehicles will not explode if they are flipped over.
When the police are in search of Niko, the player will now have to avoid a certain radius marked on the map in which the police will be looking for him. The size of this radius will increase with the player's wanted level (the more stars, the bigger the radius) and re-centres itself on Niko's location if he is spotted by the police.
Pedestrians are much more intelligent, realistic, and diverse, using mobile phones, cash machines, eating snacks, drinking soda, reading newspapers, scratching their noses, coughing, smoking, and interacting with each other through laughter and remarks. Homeless people will be seen in alleys rubbing their hands over a flaming barrel, sitting against walls, asking for spare change, and other expected actions. The flow of pedestrians and traffic will be different depending on the time of day. Additionally, pedestrians can now report crimes such as car-jacking.
The gunfight system has been reworked to feel natural by utilising a cover system similar to that of Gears of War and Uncharted: Drake's Fortune.
Heavy fire will scar - and permanently destroy - parts of the environment.
The player will not be able to fly any fixed-wing aircraft, however, helicopters will be flyable and the player will also be able to control boats.
Niko will be able to perform a variety of new actions such as climbing telephone poles and fire escapes, pushing people who bump into him, calling women for dates[36], playing pool, darts, bowling, eating, and drinking.
Niko will make use of the Internet as a means of communication. Although the exact details of the role of the Internet in the game are being kept secret, it has been revealed in a GamesTM Magazine article that Niko can access the internet from various cyber cafes (one of which is called "TW@") in order to upload a resume for prospective employers.[31] According to Dan Houser, there are over 100 accessible, fictitious web-sites within the game.
It has been revealed that every street in the game will have a name for the reason that some missions will require the player to go to a specific address.
Niko's outfit can be changed throughout the game. However, it will not be possible to customise his physique or hairstyle as in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.
There is now an autosave that activates after completing a mission.
Multiplayer:
Multiplayer will be a feature of GTA IV,It will be accessible from Niko's mobile phone and is aiming for up to 16 players, with a possibility of open-ended gameplay and exploring the whole city.
Extra Content:
Rockstar Games will offer exclusive episodic content via Xbox Live for the Xbox 360 version. This had been confirmed by Rockstar, announcing two extra, exclusive, episodes offering hours on end of extra gameplay just for the Xbox 360.
These will be released after the release of the game, and they are not just an extra character or car, these episodes will last a minimum of 10 hours.
Details on the pricing of these downloads have not yet been revealed, though it would almost certainly not be released for free.
Grand Theft Auto IV Special Edition:
It will contain the following:
-A customised metal safe deposit box.
-A Rockstar keychain for the safe deposit box keys.
-A limited edition Rockstar duffel bag.
-Production artwork in the Grand Theft Auto IV Art Book.
-Selected soundtrack CD from Grand Theft Auto IV, featuring new material from top artists, only available on this release.
-A specially packaged version of the game for either PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360.

UPS just brought Hidden Package #2 from Rockstar. No screenshot this time, but it did contain a Liberty Swingers baseball shirt, which one must presume is the name of a baseball team in the game world. Here's a closeup of the logo on the shirt:

GTA IV will contain a deep multiplayer mode, including deathmatch, team play ("Cops 'n Crooks"), and some sort of ranked cooperative missions. Our source specifically talks about modes called "Deal Breaker," "Bomb da Base," and something called "Hangman's Noose," but gives no further details. The game will also feature ranked multiplayer races, likely across the game's open roads of Liberty City.

Got two buddies working on this game, and they have been gushing over it for months now. Keep in mind, most developers HATE their own game at the end...and these guys are old, cynical bastards to boot. But they can't get enough of it...

Euphoria physics system games look amazing so far. Can't wait until this and then Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, the only announced games so far that I know of that going to use Euphoria.
If EA took the time to put Euphoria into their football games, it would be the single greatest sports game ever made by a LARGE margin.

They say the jump from GTA 3 to 4 will be as big an evolution as GTA 3 was to the first two. I can't wait.
If you like racing/sandbox games like GTA, take a look at Burnout Paradise. Great game. It's like GTA without the killing and on-foot missions. You drive around to different traffic lights to accept different events.
Great fun.

By SETH SCHIESEL NY Times
Published: April 28, 2008
I was rolling through the neon deluge of a place very like Times Square the other night in my Landstalker sport utility vehicle, listening to David Bowie’s “Fascination” on the radio. The glittery urban landscape was almost enough to make me forget about the warehouse of cocaine dealers I was headed uptown to rip off.
Soon I would get bored, though, and carjack a luxury sedan. I’d meet my Rasta buddy Little Jacob, then check out a late show by Ricky Gervais at a comedy club around the corner. Afterward I’d head north to confront the dealers, at least if I could elude the cops. I heard their sirens before I saw them and peeled out, tires squealing.
It was just another night on the streets of Liberty City, the exhilarating, lusciously dystopian rendition of New York City in 2008 that propels Grand Theft Auto IV, the ambitious new video game to be released on Tuesday for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 systems.
Published by Rockstar Games, Grand Theft Auto IV is a violent, intelligent, profane, endearing, obnoxious, sly, richly textured and thoroughly compelling work of cultural satire disguised as fun. It calls to mind a rollicking R-rated version of Mad magazine featuring Dave Chappelle and Quentin Tarantino, and sets a new standard for what is possible in interactive arts. It is by far the best game of the series, which made its debut in 1997 and has since sold more than 70 million copies. Grand Theft Auto IV will retail for $60.
Niko Bellic is the player-controlled protagonist this time, and he is one of the most fully realized characters video games have yet produced. A veteran of the Balkan wars and a former human trafficker in the Adriatic, he arrives in Liberty City’s rendition of Brighton Beach at the start of the game to move in with his affable if naïve cousin Roman. Niko expects to find fortune and, just maybe, track down someone who betrayed him long ago. Over the course of the story line he discovers that revenge is not always what one expects.
Besides the nuanced Niko the game is populated by a winsome procession of grifters, hustlers, drug peddlers and other gloriously unrepentant lowlifes, each a caricature less politically correct than the last.
Hardly a demographic escapes skewering. In addition to various Italian and Irish crime families, there are venal Russian gangsters, black crack slingers, argyle-sporting Jamaican potheads, Puerto Rican hoodlums, a corrupt police commissioner, a steroid-addled Brooklyn knucklehead named Brucie Kibbutz and a former Eastern European soldier who has become a twee Upper West Side metrosexual.
Breathing life into Niko and the other characters is a pungent script by Dan Houser and Rupert Humphries that reveals a mastery of street patois to rival Elmore Leonard’s. The point of the main plot is to guide Niko through the city’s criminal underworld. Gang leaders and thugs set missions for him to complete, and his success moves the story along toward a conclusion that seems as dark as its beginning. But the real star of the game is the city itself. It looks like New York. It sounds like New York. It feels like New York. Liberty City has been so meticulously created it almost even smells like New York. From Brooklyn (called Broker), through Queens (Dukes), the Bronx (Bohan), Manhattan (Algonquin) and an urban slice of New Jersey (Alderney), the game’s streets and alleys ooze a stylized yet unmistakable authenticity. (Staten Island is left out however.)
The game does not try to represent anything close to every street in the city, but the overall proportions, textures, geography, sights and sounds are spot-on. The major landmarks are present, often rendered in surprising detail, from the Cyclone at Coney Island to the Domino Sugar factory and Grand Army Plaza in Brooklyn and on up through the detritus of the 1964-65 World’s Fair in Queens. Central Park, the Empire State Building, various museums, the Statue of Liberty and Times Square are all present and accounted for. There is no Yankee Stadium, but there is a professional baseball team known, with the deliciousness typical of the game’s winks and nods, as the Swingers.
At least as impressive as the city’s virtual topography is the range of the game’s audio and music production, delivered through an entire dial’s worth of radio stations available in almost any of the dozens of different cars, trucks and motorcycles a player can steal. From the jazz channel (billed as “music from when America was cool”) through the salsa, alt-rock, jazz, metal and multiple reggae and hip-hop stations, Lazlow Jones, Ivan Pavlovich and the rest of Rockstar’s audio team demonstrate a musical erudition beyond anything heard before in a video game. The biggest problem with the game’s extensive subway system is that there’s no music underground. (Too bad there are no iPods to nab.)
The game’s roster of radio hosts runs from Karl Lagerfeld to Iggy Pop and DJ Green Lantern. It is not faint praise to point out that at times, simply driving around the city listening to the radio — seguing from “Moanin’ ” by Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers to the Isley Brothers’ “Footsteps in the Dark” to “The Crack House” by Fat Joe featuring Lil Wayne — can be as enjoyable as anything the game has to offer.
Grand Theft Auto IV is such a simultaneously adoring and insightful take on modern America that it almost had to come from somewhere else. The game’s main production studio is in Edinburgh, and Rockstar’s leaders, the brothers Dan and Sam Houser, are British expatriates who moved to New York to indulge their fascination with urban American culture. Their success places them firmly among the distinguished cast of Britons from Mick Jagger and Keith Richards through Tina Brown who have flourished by identifying key elements of American culture, repackaging them for mass consumption and selling them back at a markup.
It all adds up to a new level of depth for an interactive entertainment experience. I’ve spent almost 60 hours practically sequestered in a (real world) Manhattan hotel room in recent weeks playing through Grand Theft Auto IV’s main story line and the game still says I have found only 64 percent of its content. I won’t ever reach 100 percent, not least because I won’t hunt down all 200 of the target pigeons (known as flying rats here) that the designers have hidden around the city.
But like millions of other players I will happily spend untold hours cruising Liberty City’s bridges and byways, hitting the clubs, grooving to the radio and running from the cops. Even when the real New York City is right outside.

There really isn´t anything to say that you haven´t seen in reviews yet. They changed some things and added a ton. I only just unlocked the weapons dealer and got myself an Uzi, a shotty and a pistol.
The biggest addition probably is a cover system but I yet have to truly test it, but it seems like most of the stuff they added takes getting used. The driving is way more difficult now as the cars all handle rather realistically and you can´t do turns at full speed anymore. The city seems huge and I have only unlocked one of the 3 islands so far ... I haven´t been to Manhattan yet, I am still in a part called Broker which is a bit like the Bronx, I guess.
The game looks nice ... it´s not stunning alá COD4, but it´s nice ... I noticed the odd pop up here and there, but I haven´t seen noticed any big problems on the technical side. The mini-games are all pretty cool although darts seems a little easy and I actually won my first game with a nine darter.
There is just so much you can do

I work at a game studio, and we've had around 6 people out of 40 call in sick today. I picked it up at 10:00 this morning, dying to get home some I can play.
Might just be the best game ever made. We'll have to see.

Midnight GTAIV sales see stabbing, mugging
Police say one man apparently waiting in line attacked a passerby, while a teenager elsewhere was beaten up for his copy of the game.
By Brendan Sinclair (http://www.gamespot.com/users/Polybren/), GameSpot (http://www.gamespot.com/) Posted Apr 29, 2008 11:03 am PT
Midnight launches aren't always the gaming industry's proudest moments. The PlayStation 3 release in particular was riddled with launch-related crimes (http://www.gamespot.com/news/6161981.html), including a mugging, a store robbery, a launch line hold-up, and a shooting.
Grand Theft Auto IV went on sale in stores around the world at 12:01 a.m. this morning, and already reports of criminal midnight launch madness are starting to filter in. The BBC News is reporting on a pair of incidents, with news of a stabbing (http://tinyurl.com/5puhzh) outside a Gamestation in Croydon and a mugging (http://tinyurl.com/6new7u) by another game store in Lancashire.
According to the news service, a 23-year-old man was attacked by a knife-wielding assailant as he passed a line outside the Gamestation. The victim was treated for several stab wounds and has since been released. The attacker, who police said appeared to be waiting in the line of about 50 to 100 people, was not apprehended.
In the mugging, an 18-year-old was robbed of his copy of the game and beaten as he walked home from the store with a friend. The victim was taken to the hospital with a broken jaw and a broken nose.
Police are asking for witnesses in both cases to step forward.
Great way to give "Public interest Groups" more fuel to throw on the fire against violent videogames.
sigh.....

I just customized my cellular and got a little action from my chick after an impressive date at the chicken shack.
The little details are what make the game great. Talk radio cracks me up.

Played the Iron man demo. Wasn't too impressed with it. Controls we're a little off. Way to sensitive. Camera angle was annoying at times to.

Thanks in part to E.T., Atari posted a $536 million dollar loss in 1983, the start of an agonizing death spiral that didn't end until the company was sold off in pieces a few years later.

Only got to play about 2 hours today but it's a lot of fun. Sitting in the apartment and watching TV was hilarious. Still haven't got invited up by Michelle yet, is it because I'm a crappy bowler or because I "might" have totaled her car?

Driving hard in this game. You actually have to drive as if ur driving in reallife. Its realistic and all but i dont rly like it. I enjoyed driving just cruising around the city in the previous versions because driving was so smooth. W/E ill get used to it i guess.

I'm going to buy it for the 360 this weekend, and a HDMI for my PS3. Time to go HD! Have 2 friends playing GTA and they can't stop talking about how much fun it is. Can't wait to waste some hours on it. On Xplay last night they said it should take about 100hrs to complete the game. Thats What I am talking about, no more 7hr crappy single player games like Gears/CoD4.

I farked up my date with Michelle, we went bowling and I accidentally punched her after
After working for a second date, all was well until I had to drive her home and realized the car I jacked to get her to the place was gone when we came out, I stole another car and apparently that set her off and she left all pissy
