Russia in Ukraine missile threat

Russia has said it may target its missiles at Ukraine if its neighbour joins Nato and accepts the deployment of the US missile defence shield.
Russian President Vladimir Putin made the comments in Moscow alongside Ukraine's President, Viktor Yushchenko.

Mr Putin has condemned US plans to include Poland and the Czech Republic in its missile defence shield.

The leaders had been meeting in urgent talks over a gas dispute and announced a deal to avoid disrupting supplies.

'Scary'

Speaking at a news conference at the Kremlin on Tuesday, Mr Putin said he had advised Ukraine not to join Nato, but admitted he would be unable to interfere in any such move.

"Joining such a bloc means a country restricting its own sovereignty," he warned.

When asked about the consequences of Ukraine gaining Nato membership, Mr Putin said Russia was concerned that its neighbour would agree to host parts of the US missile defence shield on its territory.

The US wants the shield to destroy incoming ballistic missiles potentially coming from North Korea and Iran. Plans would currently see some interceptor missiles being based in Poland and an associated radar being built in the Czech Republic.

"I am not only terrified to utter this, it is scary even to think that Russia, in response to a possible deployment of... [parts of the] missile shield in Ukraine... would have to target its offensive rocket systems at Ukraine," he said.

"The goal [of the missile shield] is to neutralise our nuclear capabilities... This would prompt Russia to take retaliatory action," he added.

In a televised speech to the Russian State Council last week, Mr Putin had warned that a "new phase in the arms race is unfolding in the world".

He said other countries were spending far more than Russia on new weapons, but that it would respond to the challenges of an arms race by developing hi-tech weaponry.

Nato invitation

On the gas dispute, Ukraine agreed to start repaying $1.5bn (£770m) owed to the Russian gas company, Gazprom, from Thursday. In return, Russia is reported to have agreed to freeze the price of gas exports to Ukraine at last year's level.

The dispute had raised concerns in European countries, which experienced disruption to their gas supplies as the result of a similar dispute two years ago.

Separately on Tuesday, Russia's foreign minister said Mr Putin had accepted an invitation to attend the forthcoming Nato summit in the Romanian capital, Bucharest, in April.

Mr Putin will no longer be Russian president in April. Elections for his successor will be held next month.

"This yet again testifies to the fact that Russia is open to dialogue on any issues," Sergei Lavrov told reporters while attending the Conference on Disarmament in Geneva.

At the conference, Russia and China proposed a new treaty to ban the use of weapons in space and the use or threat of force against satellites or other craft.

I think Bush should look in a mirror. That should keep him occupied until a suitable replacement can be found.

What a ****ing disaster this ****head has been to our nation.

On the bright side, a nuclear war might help solve the overpopulation problem.

Being that I have family there I've always kept a close eye on this. It was a mistake for the Ukraine to give up their nukes when they got their Independence back in 1991 from Russia. They did so with the assurance that they could become apart of NATO.

Russia has always pillaged Ukraine of it's resources. It's a very rich country in terms of natural resources.

Not many people even know this but Russia was ready to roll in tanks during the Ukraine's "Orange Revolution" in 2004. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orange_Revolution

Yeah the russians did a masterful job with Chernobyl. Plenty of birth defects still effecting thousands of people to this day.
I guess the russians thought that nobody would notice a nuclear fallout spreading over most of Europe.

Somehow I doubt they planned it that way.

Well it was no surprise to any of the locals. The reactor was in decay, under staffed and under funded. I've talked to people who lived near the area when I lived out there in the early 90's.

I don't think it was planned but the Russians kept it a "secret" for two days Old Dude. Don't you think they should have warned the rest of world that a nuclear reactor melted down and was spreading across thousands of miles?

Well, of course. But it's still not like they WANTED a meltdown.

Maybe I'm missing your point.

Have you read Cormac McCarthy's latest book, The Road? If not, give it a try. You won't be disappointed.

The Russians turned that into a serious cluster****.

I saw this video from about a day after that happened, the Russians in all their wisdom decided to send some helicopters in to drop something over what was left of the reactor. Needless to say the pilots weren't adaquetly shielded and the next thing you know, you say this helicopter just start to drop and clip a tower on it's way down.

Talk about "whoops"

Putin threatens to aim rockets at U.S. bases
Russian premier again reacts to plan for U.S. installations in Eastern Europe

MOSCOW - President Vladimir Putin on Thursday repeated his threat to aim Russian rockets at former Soviet satellite states if U.S. missile defense facilities are deployed there.

Speaking about U.S. plans for interceptors in Poland and a radar system in the Czech Republic, Putin said that "our experts consider that this system threatens our national security and if it appears, we will be obligated to adequately react to this."

He said Russia's action would be to "retarget our missiles toward a system that we aren't creating."

We are warning people ahead of time: if you take this step, then we will make this step," Putin told an annual news conference in the Kremlin.

Putin also said Russian missiles could be aimed at neighboring Ukraine -- a former Soviet republic whose pro-Western leadership is pursuing NATO membership -- if it were to host a missile-defense facility. Putin had issued the same warning in a meeting with Ukraine's President Viktor Yushchenko earlier this week.

Undemocratic?
He suggested that the United States and the leaders of Poland and the Czech Republic were going ahead with plans for the missile defense system without asking for public approval, which he called undemocratic.

Turning to another sore point in Moscow's relations with the West, Putin also lashed out angrily at the United States and other NATO nations over their refusal to ratify an amended version of the 1990 Conventional Forces in Europe Treaty. Putin suspended Russia's participation in the pact in December.

He said the restrictions Russia faced under the treaty were made unacceptable by NATO's eastward expansion after the 1991 Soviet collapse, likening them to a situation in which U.S. troop movements from California to Texas would be subject to Russian approval.

"We will no longer fulfill any colonial conditions," Putin said.

Putin also spoke of Russia's renewal of the Soviet-era practice of global bomber flights close to other countries' borders, saying that Moscow is not looking for a fight but must conduct the flights to keep its military in shape.

"No clash is planned, and I hope that will never happen," he said.

lol like they aren't already targeting those places. With all the mobile launchers Russia probably has built they can strike anyone in Europe whenever they want.

It's genius plan to nuke a country that has an estimated 10,000,000 Russians living within the border and many more million with Russian roots. I guess they are going to activate their radioactive nuclear fallout border after they waste a few million of their own people across their common border.Ha!

Or maybe Putin will break out the mini nukes.
