View Full Version : Traffic alert for you Denverites....

I-25 northbound is shut down pretty much. Four of the five northbound lanes of Interstate 25 are closed at 56th Ave. due to a water main break that caused a massive sinkhole. Traffic is being detoured onto Interstate 70.

Avoid if you can...

9news said this

it is unclear what caused the water main break. The sinkhole is right before the 58th Avenue exit and is 16 feet deep.

The problem isn't I-25. The problem is when the I-25 traffic gets diverted. It's like when something plugs your intestines. The bad stuff still has to go somewhere, and then things get more complicated than you hoped.

7 news reports. 150k-200k cars per day use that corridor. Denver water and CDOT say it will take 10hrs to 1 week to fix. I'm leaning towards the one week time line over the 10 hr quick fix. 10 hrs. Yeah right.

My commute is a straight line down the 5 south.

My Commute used to be on the 101 going from Newbury Park/Thousand Oaks to either Calabasas or Simi Valley depending on what was going on with work. It'd take at LEAST an hour.

Here in Colorado, the only area that reminds me of California is the I-25 near Arapahoe rd. Sucks.

I just spoke to the company who is doing the pipeline welding on my project. They are going to do the repairs/ welding of the replacement pipe. In the past we've done quite a few projects for Denver water, but this is an ugly one.
Apparantly there was some sort of PRV failure which caused the pipeline to burst. A 66" diameter pipe can spew quite a bit of water in very little time depending on pressure. I've heard over 2million gallons were lost prior to shutdown of the distribution line.
As time passes we'll see many more of these types of breaks due to the age of the system and the lack of protection and cathodic systems.

So two million gallons rushed out of this pipe under a highway and they said they might have it all fixed in 10hrs?Ha!

I'm not a soils engineer but I'd imagine that water seeped quite a distance in every direction. I don't think a mop is going to dry this situation out in a day.

It's ****ing miracle no one was hurt. The saving grace was that the break occured under the hwy. If this pipe had blown under landscaped areas or under a thin asphalt road it would have been "SPECTACULAR". I think that the 11-17 concrete roadway actually saved a bunch of lives.

The real hero is whoever saw an irregularity in the roadway and made the initial call to emergency services.

Yeah it was a real cluster**** a couple Fridays ago when we got that surprise snowstorm. You know the one where the weather people said "only a couple flakes and not much to worry" about storm. I try to avoid that area in general during Rush Hour.

Try the 10 freeway anytime of the day while you are in LA. CBF1 rates all of SoCal in one group lump because of the LA problems. We dont have that bad of a traffic problem in OC. The worst freeway was the 22 and now that the construction is done, it is probably 300% or more better in rush hour. I dont like giving away more tax money but that 1/2 sales tax to transportation has been the best spent. Enjoy the roadside pool Denverites. Maybe the Avs can have an outside practice if it gets cold enough to freeze over. Also, nice to know that you have our old CALTRANS "lady". She did wonders here in California. LA SUCKS! Great, now Jason will be responding.
