HONOLULU — Champ Bailey believes Bob Slowik is the right man to run the Broncos' defense.

In fact, Bailey has believed that for a year.

"To tell the truth, I think this is a year too late," Bailey said Wednesday at the Pro Bowl. "Nothing against (Jim) Bates, but Slowik is the right fit for this defense."

Slowik has been the Broncos' secondary coach since 2005. He was promoted to defensive coordinator early in 2007 but Bates, who was hired in January 2007, was in charge of the defense. When Bates and the team mutually parted ways last month, Slowik was promptly promoted. He has been a defensive coordinator with Green Bay, Chicago and Cleveland.

Bailey said Slowik's familiarity with the players is going to help.

"He's been here for a while, and he knows how it all works," Bailey said. "I think there will be more consistency. I think Bates was a good coach, but we didn't have the personnel for what he ran. It just didn't work. We were all over the place. He'd have starters get cut. It was no consistency there."

Bailey said he hopes the Broncos spend their free-agency money and draft choices on defensive players. He said the team needs help at defensive tackle and perhaps linebacker.

"We need a few more players," Bailey said. "Hopefully, we get that help."

Of prime concern is linemen who can pressure the quarterback, he said.

"The Giants won the Super Bowl with a pass rush," Bailey said. "That's how you win. . . . Hopefully, we can do something like that."

Commish on Henry.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said he doesn't believe there will be a fallout from Broncos running back Travis Henry's victory over the league in his drug testing case.

In his first public comments on the case, Goodell said the substance-abuse program and drug-testing policies work, and he is not concerned other players who test positive for marijuana will be able to avoid suspensions.

He said the Henry case was isolated, and if he has one regret it is that the NFL did not communicate one aspect of the process to Henry. Goodell wouldn't elaborate.

"There was a failure there," Goodell said. "Players have rights and we have responsibilities. . . . But overall, I believe in our system and our program."

Asking henry to pay $200k cuz he beat ya is a bit petty IMO.

More evidence that Shanny is not necessarily the control freak that many paint him to be.

I agree with Bailey. Slowik has been around, and knows every player on this defense and what their strengths and weaknesses are. We're not going to be a dominant defense next year regardless of who the DC is, and the truth is we don't need to be. With our offense, even a middle of the road defense will give us the chance to win a lot of games.

I think a lot of people are giving Slowik a bum rap, and I think he can turn these defense into a unit that complements the other side of the ball very well.

I was never a Greg Robinson fan, but when Elway was around his aggressive blitzing style of defense was a perfect compliment to the offense. It forced a lot of TOs, and when if was beaten it was often beaten with bigger plays that didn't allow the other team to control the clock and keep Elway and TD off the field.

I think Slowik's defense will be very good at not letting opposing offenses just plod down the field and control the tempo of the game, which was the case in nearly every game this season. They may get beat, and give up some plays, but I think they'll do so by forcing the issue. With our corners I think that will lead to more turnovers.

Depending on FA and the draft, I think this defense could be anywhere from servicable to pretty good next year. But I have full confidence that it will be much improved over '07.

Rep...

These 2 paragraphs are my exact sentiments...

We can give up a few big plays...I can certainly live with that...

But those methodical drives giving up 5 ypc against the run is something I don't want to see again...

Nice take...I agree completely. A co-worker and I out here in Sparkler land were thinking the same things. With corners that can catch it's better to force some balls in the air and see what happens.
