HONOLULU — Champ Bailey wants to bring up the subject. He also wants to play it as cool as he can.

But the Broncos cornerback can't lie. He is eager to know what John Lynch, his close friend and teammate, is going to do this year.

"I haven't bugged him yet about it," Bailey said Tuesday. "I want to, and I will, but I'm just waiting to ask him about it."

And the wait continues. Tuesday was the first day of practices for the Pro Bowl and Lynch, a Broncos safety, remained noncommittal about his future in the NFL.

While still deliberating his future, Lynch said he had no thoughts during the AFC team's practice for Sunday's game that this might be his last week on a football field.

"This is fun," said Lynch, who was named to his ninth Pro Bowl two weeks ago as an alternate. "That's all this is. I'm just not thinking about it right now."

Lynch, 36, said one holdup in making his decision has been his inability to spend time with Broncos coach Mike Shanahan.

Shanahan was out of the office in recent weeks, but the Broncos' coaching staff is back at Dove Valley headquarters preparing for free agency.

Lynch expects to speak to Shanahan when he returns from Hawaii next week.

Lynch did some work for Fox at the Super Bowl and could go into broadcasting when he retires. "You know where I stand," Bailey said. "I want him back."

Here's hoping he comes back. Though I think he would be great on TV. He can actually speak properly, is intelligent, and knows football in and out. So one more year and then TV.

Lynch is tailor made for TV, but that will be there regardless of when he retires. I'd like to have him back, if for no reason other than Denver doesn't really have anyone even close to ready to plug in there at FS.

Please don't come back John. Its time to get younger.

It's nice to see Champ is backing him, but Lynch's decision to come back will sway in large part to the type of role he will play based on his pending conversation with Shanahan. Numerous insiders have posted that Lynch would like to play another season, but not as a part-timer who comes out on passing downs as he did at times last year for Foxworth.

I only want him back if he can contribute.

But if we draft a stud safety, he could be huge to his development.

People are talking about going younger and faster. I just don't think being faster means everything. Lynch has proved he incredibly smart on the field and on the sidelines. No speed can make up that difference.

Also, people are talking about how he is slower. Do people say this because he is older and automaticly slower? The only difference I notice is he has been injured the last 2 seasons and has missed some games. I don't see where he is "slower" on the field. From what I see, he still hits like a truck and makes all the right decisions on the field. Or maybe I just don't have the football sense like most people.
