I went to see There Will Be Blood and my goodness it is one of the greatest movies of all time.

I thought There Will be Blood looked good. Looking forward to seeing it. I have three kids under 5 so I am way behind, but I am currently watching Breach and it is pretty good so far. I can't wait to see Rambo. Yes, I am serious. Ha ha.

god, I can't wait to see Blood. Some of my favorites from this last year:
No Country for Old Men, Juno, The Lives of Others, Superbad, Ratatouille, Zodiac

some other good ones that I wouldn't rank as favorites, but worth watching:
Bourne Ultimatum, Sweeney Todd, 3:10 to Yuma, Atonement, Sunshine, Reign over me, Before the Devil Knows Your Dead

Overall I thought this was a really good year for movies, and I still haven't seen a lot of the good ones yet (Into the wild, there will be blood).

I love Blockbuster Online -- I always have interesting, lesser known movies to watch and can turn them in and grab a recent hit from a Blockbuster store if I want.

I really liked 3:10 to Yuma. Russell Crowe and Christian Bale are two of my favorite actors and they were great in this western.

Kid A, I freaking loved 3:10 to Huma I got it off netflix and watched it about 10 times before I sent it back. Born Ultimatum was good, not as good as Identity but better then the Supremacy.

Agreed, I ended up thinking about it the entire next day at work. What a ****ing performance. I've never seen a movie that felt more like reading a book. Best character development I've seen in a movie since.............. wow, I don't even know.

Movies don't develop characters anymore, which is disappointing.

3:10 To Yuma was excellent! How was Atonement? They stated it was the best date movie since Titanic, so I decided not to see it. It actually looked decent until I heard that. Good Luck Chuck was funny.

The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford was an awesome movie.

Had to hit the special theater for it, i recommend it.

No country for old men was great as well.

Super Bad: Stands out to me as being the best movie of 2007, it may not appeal to everyone because of it's crude humor but it's right up my alley. I saw Super Bad two days in a row it's opening weekend, and had to go back a third time weeks later. I've also watched it countless times since it's release on DVD.

No Reservations: Is my most underrated movie of 07, I must admit I wasn't thrilled about going to see it in theaters. I was pleasantly surprised by this touching feel good summer movie.

Others worth your time:
Eastern Promises, Knocked Up, Atonement, 30 Days of Night

Don't get out to see movies much any more. But we rent a few from the $1 rental kiosks.

Last three we saw worthy of note were The Borne Ultimatum which I thought was a very good movie. Good plot, good acting, could follow the story and didn't feel I was getting my chain yanked.

Can't say as much for The Kingdom. While I liked the flick and enjoyed the premise, it was much too hokey for me. I only WISH it was that easy to bust up a terrorist ring!

And then I had HUGE hopes for 3:10 to Yuma. Thought that was going to be my favorite this year and it turned out to be a dud in my opinion. Ever since seeing Open Range modern Westerns have had huge shoes to fill and 3:10 just didn't do it. Again, too hokey. Good movie, though, and I'm glad I saw it. But when I want a good gunfight, I'm taking out Open Range and thrillin' by the minute to that one. Geez, what a good movie that was!

Some movies I've seen recently:

12 Monkeys - Great movie, Brad Pitt plays his natural role.

There Will Be Blood - Best movie I've seen in recent memory

Juno - smart witty dialog, great acting. Not sure why I didn't like it.

Some Like it Hot - damn, Marilyn Monroe was not what I imagined. Never seen her in a movie before, so I had a completely different mental image of her. Very funny movie though.

Flags of our Fathers - Mess of a movie. Poor plot, didn't get its point across very well. I need to see its counterpart Letters from Iwo Jima.

Layer Cake - Great drug movie, felt like a strange mix between The 51st State, Blow and Snatch. Daniel Craig was good as usual, can't wait for the next Bond.

One of my favorites quotes is "History is written by the winners" and for the most part it is. Iwo Jima does a great job of telling the story of those defeated on that horriffic island.

"There will be blood" and "No Country" are both superb movies and testaments to "two" of the greatest directors of our generation.

I thought "Atonement" was a fantastic film as well. A hiccup here and there, but a very good love story. I wouldn't call it a date movie.

I'm glad someone else mentioned "30 days of night". It wasn't exactly a great movie, but it took a genre and did something different with it, which is always welcome.

If any of you are looking for a perfect movie that is a little off the beaten path (especially given our cultural propensity toward recency), rent or queue "Vertigo" by Hitchcock. It is, simply put, a perfect movie, lovingly crafted, and beautifully acted.

I haven't really loved anything I've seen recently at the movies....enjoyed Juno and Cloverfield, but wouldn't give them A+ grades. Probably more in the B to B+ range.

Here are some of my recent Netflix rentals that have graded out well IMO, in no particular order:

Mr. Brooks (my favorite Costner movie in quite a long time)
Live Free or Die Hard (I'm a sucker for all the Die Hard movies)
Next (casting Jessica Biel never hurts a movie)
Accepted (surprisingly entertaining)
American Pie Beta House (unofficial winner of the most nudity in a non-porno film)
Deja Vu (Denzel, Caviezel.....can't go wrong)
Breach (good suspense)
Blood Diamond (all around great movie)
The Illusionist (Ed Norton makes everything of his a must-see)
The Prestige (same for Christian Bale)

For anyone that likes a good history domentary I recommend A History of Britain by Simon Schama. very well known in Britain but not played on typical history type channels over here. probably the 2nd best historical documentary film since Civil War by Ken Burns

Saw the New Zealand Wars series as well, by a Kiwi historian can't remember the name but well done and interesting about a part of the world I knew next to nothing about.

Unforgivable Blackness by Ken Burns: The Jack Johnson story.

I would say after Batman, everyone knows who Christian Bale is. There is a sequel coming out, "The Dark Knight", which will be awesome. He is also playing John Connor in a new Terminator movie which will start filming in the summer I believe.
I rewatched 3:10 the other night and loved it. Another film I preferred, which others didn't was "Children of Men". It's on HBO on demand currently.

I really loved Gone Baby Gone. It makes you think about what the right and wrong things are. Sometimes you do the right thing, but it can be viewed as the wrong thing. Sometimes you do that wrong thing, but it can be viewed as the right thing.

The Borne Ultimatum was great. So was Michael Clayton and Superbad. I didn't see 3:10 to Yuma, which I really want to see. I still need to see There Will Be Blood, No Country for Old Men, Eastern Promise, and The Assassination of Jesse James. I've heard nothing but great things about those movies.

That was the same thing that I thought. It was a decent movie, so I wasn't upset after leaving the threater, but I did feel that it was too much of a straight line to get to the bad guys. The movie needed a few more twist and turns. It needed to be a little more complex. And I got a kick out of an investigation team turning into Navy Seals at the end. They turned into super heros.

I think you can blame star wars 2 3 and whichever on George Lucas sucking. Hayden Christensen actually isnt bad in movies like Shattered Glass (which is fantastic). Lucas can't get a good performance out of anyone...and i suppose its asking a lot of them when they are constantly acting in front of blue screens and talking to characters that arent really there

I thought the same thing about Die Hard. The previews made it look like they did way too much with the stunts. But there were only two scenes that I would say were over the top. That would be when he blew up the helicoptor with a car, and when he was being chased by a jet. Other than those two scenes, I liked the movie a lot.

Seems we are going Off Topic so I figured I'd start the ball rolling and bouncing along.

I went to see There Will Be Blood and my goodness it is one of the greatest movies of all time.

A breathtaking study of a man played to PERFECTION by Daniel Day Lewis.

You guys are movie fans? What have we been watching?

I thought he deserved to win the Oscar a couple years back for his Bill the Butcher character in Gangs.

When I saw Hard Candy I Knew Ellen Page was going to be a star I also had that same feeling when I saw the movie Freeway.

It was the first time I ever saw Reese Witherspoon and she was simply awesome. I knew she was going to be huge. If you haven't seen this movie go get it. If you haven't seen this or hard Candy go get them both.

You'll never see better more powerful acting perfomances by two young actresses.

My wife and I went to see The Bucket List last weekend and it was phenomenal. Nicholson and Freeman are at their all time best and it really hits you hard, especially if you have lost a loved one to cancer.Yes it was great and i watch alot of movies.

Really? I watched it with high hopes but thought it was a Sean Penn love fest from beginning to end.

Only a certain amount of actors can pull off playing a fractured character while being the constant central focus of a slow developing movie. Sean Penn wasn't it.

+1

That was a funny mof*@ka.

For me, best comedy of 2007 is a toss-up between "Super Bad" and this guy:

really?

how did you not like this movie [3:10 to Yuma]?

maybe you just put too much excpectations on it....but i literally thought the flick was quite brilliant...the ending was questionable IMO....but other than that....great film...

You actually answered the question for me! I did have really high expectations that weren't met and I really didn't care for the ending. I'm not saying it was a bad movie. Not by a long shot. It was a good movie. I guess my tastes just run along the Open Range type flick which I thought was a brilliant movie with a spectacular gunfight scene.

Somehow the universe has conspired to allow The Hottie and the Nottie, starring Paris Hilton, to be released at a theater near you this weekend.

My advice: If you want to see it, see it soon. Doesn't sound like the kind of thing that's going to be hanging around long.

Full disclosure: Other commitments prevented me from seeing Hottie for review. Good judgment will keep me from seeing it for any other reason. Not just that - I will refrain from reading the press materials. I won't watch the trailer. I will avert my gaze upon passing the poster.<!-- BOXAD TABLE --> <TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0 width=10 align=left border=0><TBODY><TR><TD style="COLOR: gray" vAlign=top align=middle>

In other words, I wasn't all broken up about having to hand the movie off to a colleague. More than anything, I was curious.

How did this happen? I'm all for free trade, people being able to make whatever movie they want, see whatever movie they want, all that. But a Paris Hilton vehicle? Really? Who wanted that? (Teenage boys, don't answer.)

Perhaps the same people who pined for Blonde Ambition, the latest Jessica Simpson feature. Or lined up to see Dane Cook in Good Luck Chuck.

There's no accounting for taste, as they say. And it's not as if Simpson and Cook haven't been in other films - they were in Employee of the Month together (shudder). Hilton, too, has been in other movies. Yes, even more than that movie. She even was in an episode of the great Veronica Mars back in the day. Sigh. Would nothing get ratings for that show?

Of course, there are simple reasons that Hilton, Simpson keep showing up in films despite a rather spotty track record. The two are tabloid gold; the very mention of their names, the sight of their faces and whatever else they're showing on the cover of one of your finer supermarket rags is a sure-fire circulation booster.

So, the reasoning goes, if people like to read about their love lives, their party habits, their . . . well, that's about it, really. But would people pay to see them in a movie, too?

Probably not. But it doesn't stop some studios from trying.

Hey, if this is how you want to spend your money and your time, feel free. But just know that, if you're that desperate to see a movie, the five Oscar nominees for best picture are floating around in theaters out there somewhere.

You can even see them all at one (very long) sitting at the Deer Valley 30, Mesa Grand 24 and Westgate 20, all five shown one after the other, starting at 11 a.m. on Feb. 23, for $30.

Don't feel like going out? Then you could check out 31 Days of Oscar, TCM's annual marathon airing of Academy Award-nominated films that's under way (check tcm.com for schedules and themes).

You also could do volunteer work. You could build a treehouse. You could make your own beer. Read a book. Master the fine art of cross-stitch. Learn a new language. Get better at an existing one. Write your holiday thank-you notes. (Sorry, that one's just for me.) Plant a garden. Compose a symphony.

Or you could go see The Hottie and the Nottie. Your call.

For our part, we'll file it under the "life's-too-short" category and move on.

Here's one movie that should go STV. Straight to video. Who would pay $10 to see this heap of shyte.</P>

This is from my website(Unshameful plug)

I think the BEST film ever made Might be Shawshank. That is a great movie, and very well made. As far as my personal favorite, The Green Mile and Groundhog Day I just love. I don't know why but Groundhog Day, I can watch (and Have) a thousand times.

Pulp Fiction is awesome too.

So is Die Hard

Amadus sucked and was fiction.

Mozart was not a boob.

Check out almost anything on the Criterion Collection list. The Jean Cocteau verison of Beauty and the Beast as well as his Orpheus are treasures and left a big impact on me.

I disagree about Amadeus. True, it was fiction as far as plot line, but from what I've read about Mozart, the protrayal wasn't that far off, no people skills, liked to party, etc. (sounds like most musicians I know).

As far as that list goes, once I saw Terminator 2 above 2001, I quit reading.

Ok so I hated the way the actor played him. Now everyone thinks one of the true geniuses ever placed on earth was a fool.

The only part I liked was the scene where he is composing the Requeium and the dude in the mask shows up at his door with a note.

Otherwise that movie was a waste of time. BTW I have never seen Immortal Beloved" about Beethoven, I refuse to though Beethoven is a GOD. Copying Beethoven was more accurate though it was also fiction and a bad movie, Ed Harris did make a believeable Beethoven for most part.

C'mon Maners, what's your Greatest movie??

Oh, wow. That's way too simplistic to just name ONE movie. I'll go by decade and list one of my favorite movies of that particular ten-year span. Even that, it's difficult to narrow it down...

1930s - Of Mice and Men

1940s - The Grapes of Wrath

1950s - 12 Angry Men

1960s - The Hustler

1970s - Patton

1980s - The Blues Brothers

1990s - Se7en

2000s - V For Vendetta

It's interesting that my favorite movies from the 1930s and 1940s are both based on Steinbeck novels, but both were first-class movies.

Fair enough....

Open Range?...I haven't seen that. Not a big Kevin Costner fan.

How was it?

Well, just figure: You liked 3:10 to Yuma and I think it pales in comparison to Open Range. Don't worry about Costner. He's good in this flick. Seriously, it's one of the best damn movies I've seen in a long time. I'm tellin' ya, the gun fight scene at the end is worth the slow beginning. At first when I started watching it I was bored. I didn't think the movie would be any good. I was so glad I stuck it out.

Again, I must disagree. There is a difference between acting like a fool sometimes and being a fool. There are plenty of scenes in the movie that show Mozart as the genius he was. Remember, Mozart, from the time he was 3 or 4 years old, grew up being doted on and continual praised as a genius, so he did end up being a spoiled, irresponsible adult, which is why he died a pauper.

Anyway, I know I'm not going to change your mind, so we'll just agree to disagree. However, I DO agree with you about Beethoven, my "desert island" CD would probably be any recording of the Fifth Symphony, but preferably a Bernstein recording.

Symbolism

The Fool is the spirit in search of experience. He represents the mystical cleverness bereft of reason within us, the childlike ability to tune into the inner workings of the world. The sun shining behind him represents the divine nature of the Fool's wisdom. On his back are all the possessions he might need. In his hand there is a flower, showing his appreciation of beauty. He is frequently accompanied by a dog, sometimes seen as his animal desires, sometimes as the call of the "real world", nipping at his heels and distracting him. He is seemingly unconcerned that he is about to walk off the edge of a cliff, engaged in the supremest act of idiocy or trust.

The number 0 is a perfect significator for the Fool, which can become anything when he reaches his destination. Zero plus anything equals the same thing. Zero times anything equals zero.[1] Zero is nothing, a lack of hard substance, and as such it may reflect a non-issue or lack of cohesiveness for the subject at hand.

What are some good, older westerns I should watch? The only one i've seen was Pale Rider and I loved it.

I liked these fairly newer films:

Tombstone
Unforgiven
Young Guns I & II
Open Range
Wyatt Earp
Silverado

Has anyone seen Two Days in April (2006)? Heard great things about it supposed to be a spot on documentary.

Four pro-bound college football players go for gridiron glory in this behind-the-scenes look at the NFL draft. Follow the intense training and all the nerve-wracking emotions that accompany the four young men on their journey to draft day, when their million-dollar dreams are intercepted by reality. Peeking into the secretive, fiercely competitive, often brutal process of creating NFL players, this documentary hits as hard as the athletes it depicts.

Pitka's expertise is called upon to help resolve marital discord between Darren Roanoke, the star center of the Toronto Maple Leafs (Romany Malco), and his wife. Yeah, its weird. Flags of our fathers was atrocious and it's companion, Iwo Jima, was absolutely beautiful and gut wrenching

I have a different opinion. Basically it offered me a movie that really shook the conventions of this latest barrage of WWII flicks (post SPR, which started a fascination for me at the age of 13). All these movies (and miniseries) constantly go on about how these men were heroes, surely they were, but there's little that explains why they have always said they aren't. Flags of Our Fathers attempts that and I think is quite successful.

Letters on the other hand is a very conventional plot co-written by Paul Haggis (Crash, a film I didn't like for the same reasons) that tries to place western emotions on japanese characters and weaves together a predictable hollywood plot (cue 100 more crash like coincidences) in favour of "emotional clout". I didn't like it.

Here's a quick if vague review I wrote for metacritic when the film came out:

An unusual war film that seems far more congruent with reality than any of the other WWII flicks of recent years. Despite not much time spent on the characters, smart viewers will still find time to empathize with them as they're thrown about in a story of unusual structure and scope. For the most part this works. Despite minor narrative flaws, this is for me the most real, affecting and smartest WWII film in modern times. Strangely, it goes against all of the worn out and overbearing themes of the far better received "Letters from Iwo Jima" (an obvious Paul Haggis script where "Crash" meets "Saving Private Ryan" with Japanese actors). This is the better film.

I can't believe there wasn't more talk about Cloverfield on here. Not so much because it was an outstanding movie but due to its unconventional nature. Not only does it use the "shaky-cam" 1st person hook but it's also imperative that you follow the viral stuff to have any kind of storyline or background. That said, it was convincing and the most "realistic" Monster flick I've seen...

I just meant that if something was to go tearing up a town that's likely what you'd see. After 9/11 people realized just how much smoke and debris a falling skyscraper produces. The way people didn't run down the street (Godzirra!) and instead took cover as fast as possible. People running out like loons with cell phones and cameras and whatnot.

And of course everyone congregating around the televisions to find out WTF was going on. I though the human element was spot on.

And the origin of said monster is vague at best with ties from one site to another hinting at some cause.

There Will Be Blood was awesome. It was all that is good about movies. Unless you're the fast-food type of moviegoer...then you probably wont like it. Its not an action-fest bloodbath, a movie with gratuitous nudity, a risque comedy, or any of the other fast-food genres that seem to dominate the form today.

It is a great character study in a unique historical setting.

Daniel Day-Lewis continues to show that he's far and away the best actor around. There is no competition.

Yeah ... he just tells the butler "I'm done." WTF was that?! It seemed like an art film - a metaphorical, symbolic art film. But it can't be that, because it's a TRUE STORY!

Very disappointing. I think Anderson should stick to fiction ....

BroncoBuff
02-20-2008, 09:33 PM
Maybe it's not a true story after all ... I just read that it came from an Upton Sinclair novel. Funny, Charlie Rose said Daniel Plainview's oil fields were part of the "Teapot Dome" oil lease scandals of the 19-naughts and teens. Why would Rose say that if it's a work of fiction? :nono:

Damn ... I gotta know ahead of time whether a film is based on a true story or is fiction.

Another problem ... the film spans 30 years, but the physical appearance of Daniel Day-Lewis (an astonishing actor, but we already knew that) doesn't change one iota.

Pink Flamingos

http://www.axelmusic.com/resources/covers/back/794043751622.jpg

Like those who listened to radio reports about the attack on Pearl Harbor, every one who has ever seen PINK FLAMINGOS can tell you exactly where they were when they first saw it--and some thirty years later the movie is still one of the most unspeakably vile, obnoxious, repulsive, and hilariously funny films ever put to celluloid, guaranteed to test the strongest stomachs and the toughest funny bones.

Filmed with a close-to-zero budget and some of the shakiest cinematography around, PINK FLAMINGOS tells the story of two families that compete for the tabloid title of "The Filthiest People Alive." Just how filthy can they be? Plenty: the film includes everything from sex with chickens to what I can only describe as a remarkable display of rectal control to a heaping helping of doggie doo, and I guarantee that you won't want to eat an egg for at least several weeks after seeing it.

The cast is either wonderful, atrocious, or atrociously wonderful, depending on how you look at it. The star, of course, is Divine... and to describe Divine as the BIGGEST drag queen on the planet would the understatement of the year. She is a mammoth creature given to BIG eye makeup, BIG orange hair, and BIG expressions--she is the Charleton Heston of drag, and whether she is almost running down a jogger, pausing to use the bathroom on some one's front lawn, or startling real-life shoppers by taking a stroll along a Baltimore sidewalk she is both unspeakable and unspeakably funny. Others in the cast include Mary Vivian Pearce, Danny Mills, and the ever-appalling Edith Massey as members of Divine's family; and Mink Stole and David Lochary as the white-slaving, baby-selling couple who challenge Divine's status.

It should be pretty obvious that PINK FLAMINGOS is not exactly a movie that will appeal to just every one, and viewers who know director John Waters only through such later films as HAIRSPRAY and CRYBABY will be in for a major jolt. But if you want to see something so completely different that even Monty Python couldn't imagine it, this is the movie for you. Just make sure you eat before you see it, because you probably won't want to eat afterward--and you might want to keep a barf bag handy just in case.

Just make sure you eat before you see it, because you probably won't want to eat afterward--and you might want to keep a barf bag handy just in case.

that's with Steve Martin right? I'll check it out. He's a good, if creepy serious actor.

I just watched an excellent documentary called "In the Shadow of the Moon" about the personal experiences (via interviews) of the original apollo astronauts on their trip to the moon. Beautiful movie.

Without a doubt the greatest movie of all time. In my opinion.

I finally watched this last night. I definitely need to see it again sometime, but it really had me hooked the entire time. Very hypnotic with the flashes back and forth to the space bubble, and the overall film kind of had a 2001 feel to it. Aronofsky is certainly one of the more interesting and worthwhile rising directors out there.

In the past week or so I've seen Gone Baby Gone, Jesse James, and Michael Clayton.

Gone Baby Gone and Michael Clayton were both real good movies. Jesse James I didn't care for that much. It wasn't bad but like GSReylea said it was slow and didn't really pick up.

Watched Rescue Dawn tonight. Not exactly what I expected coming in from a POW film, but I thought was very worthwhile. It's not a very sensationalized or prototypical take on an adventure story. It was very raw and naturalistic, with lots of nature shots and unscripted feeling dialog. Kind of like a Terrence Mallick film without voiceovers.

It might not be as action packed as some people would hope, but it is plenty intense in its own way.

I guess I'm picky and a bit eccentric.

I can relate to Paul Newman in Cool Hand Luke and Nobody's Fool. I loved Dawn Of The Dead because of the social commentary and not the face eating. It was good and well done gut-eating though. BTW, did I mention I once got drunk with Tom Savini? Guy is hardcore.

Anyway, a classic should appeal on many levels. Deep, enjoyable, a feast for the eyes. Slim pick'ns now. But, there are a few I dig:

American Beauty
Goodfellas
Tombstone (Wow)
The Entity
The Usual Suspects
Prince of Darkness (Personal biggest creep-factor ever)
12 Monkeys
Fight Club
When We Were Kings
An Officer and a Gentleman
Aliens
Primer

I'd highly stress Primer. Made on the cheap and a very slow start (first 30 minutes or so drag) but it's a mother****er to full-on comprehend. The moral and social ramifications you get, then it's like Cloverfield trying to track down what you think happened or lead to each event. Very well done, and indi no less...

What are some good, older westerns I should watch? The only one i've seen was Pale Rider and I loved it.

I liked these fairly newer films:

TombstoneF
Unforgiven
Young Guns I & II
Open Range
Wyatt Earp
Silverado

How can you not list any of the spaghetti western?

My fav westerns in no particular order:

Tombstone
Unforgivin
Good, Bad, Ugly
For a Few Dollars More
Fist Full Of Dollars
The Outlaw Josey Wales
Magnificent Seven

I know I am missing several movies right now, I just can't think of it.
For some reason, I can't get into any of the John Wayne movies.

It is mind-numbing how much Farrell is shilling for Semi-Pro.

He has turned up everywhere. Leno, Larry King, Today Show, SportsCenter, Dan Patrick Radio show this morning...and on and on.

Same questions too. Advantages to the 'Stockton' shorts, hair style...ugggg.
I really don't even find him that funny.

Old School was the last funny thing he did. the rest is just the same, tired, cookie cutter joke set on ice, on the track and now on the hardwood.
