The Republican race could be all but over after today, but the Democrats would still be without a candidate. The Republicans can unite under Romney or McCain very early, while the Democrats would be still figuring out who is going to represent them in November. I can handle that...

I'm putting aside my personal politics and just looking at it from a "predictive" point of view. Historically, I think the record shows that there has been some advantage to settling on a candidate early, but possibly not as much as we'd think. Sometimes, especially in the telecommunications age, things like perceived momentum and drama can actually work the other way.

The bigger problem for the Dems, as the writer points out, is that the whole process would have the appearance of becoming decidedly undemocratic with all kinds of backdoor deals, and one candidate or the other trying to suppress or revive votes from the penalized states. In that case, it could go well beyond indecision and into some real nasty stuff. That's not the kind of drama that anyone there would want to see.
