View Full Version : What if the Pats came calling for Champ?..
Gcver2ver3

I was on some Patriots message boards enjoying their flame-outs after the big loss...
A common theme was their need for a shutdown corner. Many of them also felt that Asante Samuel isn't worth paying the money he wants.
So my question is (hypothetically speaking of course)
If the Pats called the Broncos offering their 1st round pick (#7 overall) for Champ Bailey and you were GM would you take it?
I believe the Pats would be willing to pay Bailey and maybe even rework Bailey's contract since Champ is the best in the biz...
The Pats are a team built to win now...that would give us 2 first rounders in the top 12. We have Fox to play corner as well as Paymah....
Champ is 29 (30 at start of season)....
Am I being to biased to Champ as a fan for not taking a deal like that?
What would you do?...

Asante Samuels had the game in his hands and he punked. I guess he was too busy recalling his celebration in the EZ when he happened to knock down that pass to Tyree. You know, that celebration where he waved his hands in a way that said, everybody clap for me. More! More! ugh!~
I hate to see that crap on a football field. Anyway, keep Champ unless they're willing to give up this year's first and third and next year's first. Champ is a HOFer.

You aren't going to get a guy like Champ(in the prime of a HOF career) at pick #7. You are going to overpay for a young guy to develope. No No No.

NO WAY! Also I personally feel Champ is worth more than the #7 pick..He has 3-4 more great years(If theres a decent Dline)...I wouldnt want him to leave either hes one of my favorite Broncos!

The Pats don't operate that way
the past would suggest that you're right....
but i wouldn't necessarily agree....
the pats last season have changed some of their typical ways of running their franchise...
for example going after randy moss....a character issue....and adding the amount of free agents they did....
even still...i agree that i don't expect the Pats to actually call us about Champ....this is strictly hypothetical

Yeah for a 4th. If any team in the league can get Champ for a 4th they will.

I hate threads like this! Why give up a proven, top ranked, best in his position guy like Champ for a #1 pick who is at best three years out. That's IF we pick a winner. And we all know Shanny isn't the best at picking out #1 picks anyway.
Oh yeah and **** the pats
NFLBRONCO

If you promise we can reach a SB before he declines then no. If we only win 9 games or 1 and done in playoffs only then yes we should or should have traded him. I would vote yes only because unless Shanny hits jackpot in his offseason it will take a few years for us in AFC to make legit run. Until we actually get our lines better I don't expect much improvement honestly.

Okay...I'm the idiot that said yes....but for a reason.
Champ is getting older , and while he IS the best defensive player we have and likely will end in the hall, our team has a lot of needs.
Champ is going to be 30, and Unless we get really lucky I don't think this team can challenge for the bowl this year even with a great draft...MAYBE in two years. By then Champ will have slowed down even more....
This way he maybe gets to a SB team in his prime, something he deserves.
The #7 pick could be traded down for say Dallas's two number ones and probably a high second also. Thats getting close to what some (4 first round picks? Get real!) think he would bring. Nobody is going to give 3 or four firsts, but the 7th pick can bring you close to three (two ones and a high 2).
That would give us the 12, 21, 26? ours and dallas 2 in a deep draft. 5 players in the top 60. A decent draft and we get to finish our rebuild in one year.
Only in THAT kind of scenario would I pull that trigger...keeping the # 7 and overpaying a draftee would not be worth it.
Sure I'd like to see CB retire a Bronco...with a ring or tow also. But a great trade or two can help the team also.:spit:

I love having Champ, but the rules are set up to promote the passing game. You can definitely reach the Super Bowl or win a championship without having a shutdown corner provided you have a decent/dominant pass rush. It would have to be a sweetheart deal though which isn't likely when working with New England. Maybe Dan Snyder can get involved somehow... LOL

For people saying Champ is getting old, well, his future as a safety is incredible if you ask me. His instincts for the ball are insane, he is an incredible tackler and is great in coverage. I say he has 3-4 years at CB still, and then 3 more years at least at safety. Thats still 6 years of football left for him.

Anyone saying the Pats wouldn't trade the 7 for Champ is crazy, I think. They sent a 2nd and a 7th last year for Wes Welker, a guy who was quick as hell but hadn't proven much. The difference between Welker last year and Champ is definitely worth the difference between a 2nd and a high first.
And where are all the damn fools that have kept starting this thread and want to trade Champ? There's always a few that say it's the key to winning the SB but only one guy has shown up to stand by his point. Grow some balls you little sissies... you plague the board with your "trade champ" nonsense... Make sure you show up and defend that point, don't hide in the shadows once you know it's an unpopular opinion.

No way! As others have pointed out, a first round pick at #7 doesn't guarantee you will get a high impact player. The draft is a gamble and to trade possibly the best CB who has ever played the game for a guy who may or may not help this team, you'd have to be crazy.
This team needs to just focus on making their D-line better so that Bailey and Bly can be more effective.

58 people who voted NO sure have tons of faith Shanny can rebuild the trenches and everywhere else before Champ declines. I see everyones point about unproven draft picks that is a risk. This team has alot of work to do with or without him. What if we don't make SB will you still rather have Champ or try and bolster team with lots of picks in next few drafts. AFC is no easy task and it is not a given you'll reach a SB even with a great team and its even more unlikely with a soft team.

We could trade Champ, tank all the games next season to get all the best players in the draft... prime ourselves for a great SB run... and I could get run over by Spider's rig doing a victory donut.
