Politics is cyclical. The Republican party has always had two wings, the Roosevelt/Nixon/Ford/Rockefeller wing which loves big government, and the Harding/Coolidge/Hoover/Goldwater/Reagan wing that distrusts big government.
The Reagan wing took control of the party in 1980, it had a good run, but the Reagan coalition has been getting weaker and weaker for a while now (look at the 1996 election for proof, Bob Dole won out over Phil Gramm, clearly a sign that Reagan conservatism was in decline) now the Roosevelt wing is in the ascendancy.
John McCain is in the Roosevelt wing. His winning the nomination (which he almost certainly will) means a return to the Republican party of the Nixon/Ford era, which means lots of big government activism and higher taxes.

These things are cyclical, the Reaganites had their turn, now the Nixonians get their turn. The Reaganites WILL come back eventually, but it might take another 25-30 years.
