View Full Version : Most Overrated HOF'er
Breaker

With the announcements for this years HOF class coming up it has occurred to me that there are way to many people in the fabled Hall that simply do not belong there. Give me your most overrated HOF'er and why they should not be in the Hall.
Mine is Joe Namath, here is why.
Namath Career Numbers:
Career Passing Yards: 43rd
Career Passing TD: 46th (only 173)
Career Passer Rating: 163rd
Career Passes Int: 17th (220)
Wins: 77
Losses: 108
He only had three winning seasons.
Before everyone jumps on the "era" argument look at what some of his contemporaries did in similar categories, guys who are not in the HOF.
John Hadl:
Career Passing Yards: 19th
Career Passing TD: 15th
Career Passer Rating: 153rd
Career Passes Int: 3rd
Norm Snead
Career Passing Yards: 29th
Career Passing TD: 30th
Career Passing Rating: 163rd
Career Passes Int: 6th
Roman Gabriel
Career Passing Yards: 32nd
Career Passing TD: 26th
Career Passer Rating: 93rd
Career Passes Int: 50th
It looks like to me anyways that Namath got in on one game and by making a claim that the Jets would win a Super Bowl, and that is pretty much the only reason he did. Since I wasn't around at the time, and this is all retrospective on my part, can someone convince me that this take is totally wrong by giving me some info that the numbers don't really show.

Otherwise, his career was not that impressive.

While I wont argue the #s with you, his HOF credentials are greater than the performance.
Namath was larger than life. His knees were so banged up, the Army rated him 4F for the draft - i.e. they didnt want him. He was a big figure in the biggest town. He was flamboyant and really captured the era he played in on the field. Further, he was the first AFC QB to win a SB and he did it as a vast underdog - after guarenteeing he would do it. He was as much of an ambassador for the AFL as any player ever was.
I dont know if I would say he is overrated by being in the HOF. Granted he couldnt get there today, but that was then and this is now.

I dunno .... Namath did a heckuva lot for the AFL, he clinched the merger almost single-handedly by becoming a larger-than-life figure in a major media market ... and then winning the Super Bowl. His on-field stats might be a bit light, but his intangibles are through the roof.
As far as "Most Overrated"? I won't say Harry Carson is underserving of HOF per se ... but his career was definitely no better than Randy Gradishar's. The real explanation for both is the one qualification Namath and Carson have in common: New York City.

Mike Munchak and Bruce Matthews are great players, but they were first ballot Hall of Fame Offensive Lineman on a team (Oilers) that could NEVER run the football.
Matthews had some good rushing seasons with Eddie George, but Munchak never played with a feared rushing team.
That's because the HOF committee loves to suck Houston beat writer, John McClain's wang.

He's a first ballot lock for being a record whore.
For christ's sake, Olandis Gary could've had the rushing record in his situation, and then the guy stays on forever just to have the record... he's the Brett Favre of quarterbacks.

being durable as a running back is pretty huge. Olandis gary couldn't have done it, because Gary can't stay healthy. Most backs would have crumbled over the number of carries Emmitt got in a career. If Brett is going to get so much credit for toughness, then Smith should get even more being a RB.

Please don't get me started on Brett. Try living in Wisconsin for 5 years as a Bronco fan. I'm very biased, but how many games do you think he cost his team playing hurt when the backup was probably a better option at that point? He's a record whore... only reason he still suits up.

Marcus was a great receiver as well. When you take into his account his career, you have to consider the receiving #'s as well, ie Roger Craig and Marshall Faulk.

i agree, he was a very good player, but HOF'er? nah.
faulk averaged over 1000 rushing yards per year over 12 years and over 500 yards receiving. allen averaged just over 300 yds receiving per year. faulk's in another class.
craig's avg rushing yards per season are almost identical to marcus' but his avg. receiving yards are higher. sorry, roger's not a HOF'er and neither is Marcus.

That stat is skewed based on the fact that Old Fart Al sat him on the bench for about 3 years. Go back and look at the stats and take out those years. When he finally left to KC, he was still scoring TDs at a pace only LT could clip. Maybe a little exaggeration, but you get the point.

If Art Monk got in, he would go straight to the top of my overrated list. He caught gazillions of five-yard out patterns while Clark and Sanders hit the home runs. It would be like voting in Wes Welker.
And as for Sayers, shhhhhhh on that! He's the best reason Terrell Davis might get in. Without Sayers the "didn't play enough" excuse has true merit.

These are my overrated HOFers
Namath is in the hall for one game, Supe III, and for being a celebrity QB who played in NY.
Bob Griese benefited by handing off to one of the greatest running games in NFL history. The perfect season that he's always happy to talk about, he was hurt most of the year and in the Super Bowl against the Skins, he threw for less than 100 yards. His overall numbers are pretty weak.
I've been told by numerous offensive linemen from that era that Dan Hampton was average at best and in no way a HOFer.
Lynn Swann, again, made some acrobatic catches in big games but did not put up HOF numbers.
Marcus Allen was a 3rd down back for much of his career with KC, that's why he was able to play 16 years. He had just two 1,000 yard seasons and had none his last 12 years.
Thurman Thomas never led the NFL in rushing. Ever. And benefitted playing out of a no-huddle spread offense.
James Lofton was great for a couple seasons, but for most of his career he wasn't even the best receiver on his team.
Don Coryell should be in the HOF, not Dan Fouts . . . Steve Tensi could have put up big numbers in that offense.
And here's my new one . . . Marshall Goldberg, who will probably be voted in today. Never finished better than 3rd in the NFL in rushing with a 3.5 average
(Pug Manders finished 1st with 4.4 average; George Musson 2nd with 5.9 average)

Add in Art Monk for being snubbed.
I totall agree on Namath and I'll throw in Gale Sayers as well. The guy played pretty much 4.5 seasons and is a HOFer.

"Brian's Song" was what elevated Sayers to HOF status. The only movie a guy's allowed to cry while watching....

And as for Sayers, shhhhhhh on that! He's the best reason Terrell Davis might get in. Without Sayers the "didn't play enough" excuse has true merit.
See but I think it is going to have the opposite effect on TD. I haven't heard one person in the media compare Davis' longevity to Sayers and say he should get in. For some unknown reason everyone praises Sayers and never mentions how short of a career he played yet when Terrell's name comes up it all "he play enough" and not the he was the best rb in the league for those years, 2000 yds, Superbowl mvp and so on.
What time are they going announce the class of 2008 today???

People like Namath and Swann got in because they were famous.
Were is the criteria that the only reason someone should be in the
Football Hall of FAME is that they managed to compile
a laundry list of stats?
It didn't hurt that Joe played in NY either. Same could be said for Harry Carson.
