New England Patriots [team stats] fans are smarter, classier and healthier and own pricier homes than the riff-raff who root for the New York Giants - and now we’ve got the research to back it up.
Some 62 percent of Pats fans living in the Boston area earned a bachelor’s or postgraduate degree or have some higher-education experience, compared to 59 percent of Giants fans, according to the latest marketing data provided by the Nielsen Co., the TV ratings firm.
Likewise, 72 percent of Pats fans live in homes worth north of $200,000, compared to 63 percent of Giants yahoos, the Nielsen data show.
That’s just for starters.
Pats fans consistently show better taste than their Gotham counterparts, according to Nielsen.
We drink Amstel Light, not Bud Light. Giants fans slug back lots of whiskey.
We are likely to read connoisseur magazines like Wine Spectator. Gotham fans like to pig out on junk food like pretzels, chips and nuts. They’re also less likely to favor organic food than other New Yorkers.
Giants tailgaters are conspicuous consumers who party off the backs of Land Rovers and showy BMW SUVs. Pats fans are more likely to tailgate off the back of an understated Lexus or a sturdy Volvo SUV.
When Pats revelers aren’t watching football, they’re hitting the slopes skiing or going for a sail. They’re also more likely to belong to country clubs.
When Giants fans aren’t booing Giants coach Tom Coughlin or punk quarterback Eli Manning in that New Jersey stadium they call home, they’re out practicing their tennis backhands in the backyard.
None of these marketing revelations came as a surprise to Mike Schuster, 45, who lives in the shadow of Gillette Stadium in Foxboro.
“Boston fans are much classier,” said Schuster, a real estate agent and software consultant who is heading out to Arizona for the Super Bowl. “Have you ever been to Yankee stadium? I mean, they boo their own players.”
“Bostonians, in general, are better educated,” Schuster added. “New Yorkers have to send their kids to Boston to educate them.”
It’s also worth noting that the Patriots are an equal opportunity franchise, drawing more female fans than the competition. Nearly half of all Pats backers - about 43 percent - are women. In Giants country, just 31 percent of the fans are female.
Pats fans are also more Web savvy, some 63 percent have broadband Internet connection.
Of course, though we may hate to admit it, fans on both sides of the turf do have some similarities. The Nielsen data indicate that Pats and Giants fans are both likely to live in “affluent” suburbs or rural neighborhoods. They both buy “above average” amounts of beer, too, and they like to garden.

I would love to see a comparison of superbowl contestants of the NFC team versus what the Faiders fans are like. Oh wait, I did say superbowl contestants and included the Faiders. My mistake. WHo has that long to live?

Wow.
They have wasted little time in proudly perching themselves upon imagined greatness.
I have never liked the Yankees fans for similar reasons, but Boston fans are undoubtedly the bottom of the barrell.

I stopped right there...Amstel Light is overpriced garbage.
I've never really been fond of the Pats since they trashed their retro cool uniforms for that pewter flying Elvis thing anyways.

He unintentionally made both fan bases sound like a bunch of douche bags. Great read. Made me proud of not being a Pats/Giants fan.
I don't think that there is any way of denying it. Pats fans are a cut above. I believe that there was a misprint in the article. The comparison was with Oakland not with New York. However, what does it really mean to be a cut above the raider fans.

Amstel light and a Volvo - I don't see how this is helping their case?

Way to look like you're about to make a valid point and then water it down. You could have 59% of Giants fans with Graduate degrees and you could have 62% of Pats fans that took a single class in college and dropped out and could jusify this statement. If you're gonna substantiate education, don't include "some higher education experience" as that could be just about anything.

This pic was actually in the Boston paper's article. I thought maybe the article was a parody til I saw this picture. Dude has a glass of wine in his hand at football game - or at a tailgate.
Good God, Meck, PLEASE tell me that you dont even have wine at your tailgates much less drink it.
That's just shameful. I would be less embarrassed if our fans put on spiked shoulder pads, ala Raider fan, than that.

Folks this "article" is written/broad-casted by every newspaper/TV station every time there is a "big" game like this whatever sport. It doesn't matter if NE/NY or Denver/Green Bay it the same article saying "our" city is better then theirs.
Freaking Channel 9 in DC had the same thing when the Skins played Seattle this season. Why DC was better the Seattle. It cheap sport journalism, that editors love.

The funny thing is that this comes from the Herald. 87% of Herald readers got kicked out of Catholic school, 74% failed the firefighters' exam, and 68% are going to get their real estate license any day now.

Notice the article misses a key component of what would make really good fans. You know things like consecutive sell outs. I bet if this was a article about the Sox, they would definitely have a tidbit about how many years its been since Fenway wasnt sold out. (I assume that is decades and decades).

The comments are pretty funny...
Boston Herald columnist, Jessica Heslam, brought the heat in her column last Friday when she proclaimed that "New England fans are smarter, classier and healthier and own pricier homes than the riff-raff who root for the New York Giants."
While Heslam provides ample "evidence" (read: Pats fans drink Amstel Light, not Bud Light. Case closed.) to prove her claim, a gracious fan hunter from Manhattan submitted the following picture in rebuttal, along with the subject line "kiss my ass boston...".
http://img401.imageshack.us/img401/8830/colvenjerseylc4.jpg
No big deal, right? Just another douche bag from Boston supporting his team. Dime a dozen. But wait, there's more.
No Tom Brady jersey - which is cool. We suspect the man crush that is Tom Brady has gotten so incredibly insane within the Massachusetts state boundaries that only a select number of people wear Brady jerseys these days. It's wayyy more hip to wear an more obscure personalized jersey. Brady jerseys are only for 8 year olds and for your wife to wear while participating in some bedroom role playing.
Scanning the Pats roster we find #59, Rosevelt Colvin.
Colvin. C-O-L-V-I-N. Yep, Colvin.
Take another peek at that jersey now. Having a personalized jersey made in reference to an obscure player is a slippery slope - seal the deal and look like a superfan. On the flip side, there isn't a barrage of checks and balances when you walk into the neighborhood sporting goods store. It's tough to misspell "Brady" when there's millions of example jerseys hanging in the aisles.
Colvin is a tough one though...as is "Bruschi", "Hochstein", and "Moss" (I can never remember if it's 2 or 3 "s'" at the end there).
Still impressed by the "smarter" and "classier" New England residents? We sure are.

If you do, in fact, know this guy...and this guy's last name is "Colven", it's almost funnier - considering he chose a jersey with the real Colvin's number.
It makes absolutely no sense to draw connections to a professional athlete because his last name is almost spelled the same.
