Heath Ledger is Dead (http://www.tmz.com/2008/01/22/heath-ledger-is-dead/)
Posted Jan 22nd 2008 4:40PM by TMZ Staff (http://www.tmz.com/bloggers/tmz-staff/)
http://www.blogsmithmedia.com/www.tmz.com/media/2008/01/0122_ledger_ex_1.jpgTMZ has learned that 2006 Academy Award nominee Heath Ledger has died in NY.

He was found dead in his bed in one of his residences in Soho by his housekeeper at 3:35 PM ET today. Law enforcement sources tell TMZ they believe it was not a crime.

The 28-year-old actor has a two year old daughter with former fiancee Michelle Williams -- they separated in September, 2007. He plays the Joker in the upcoming Batman film, "The Dark Knight."

MSNBC (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/) is reporting that the actor was found, surrounded by pills.

Actor Heath Ledger Is Found Dead
By Sewell Chan

Heath Ledger (Photo: Bryan Bedder/Getty Images)The actor Heath Ledger was found dead this afternoon in an apartment building at 421 Broome Street in SoHo, according to the New York City police. Mr. Ledger was 28.
At 3:31 p.m., a masseuse arrived at Apartment 5A in the building for an appointment with Mr. Ledger, the police said. The masseuse was let in to the home by a housekeeper, who then knocked on the door of Mr. Ledger’s bedroom. When no one answered, the housekeeper and the masseuse opened the bedroom and found Mr. Ledger unconscious. They shook him, but he did not respond. They immediately called the authorities.
The police said they did not suspect foul play. Officials said pills were found near the body.
Mr. Ledger, a native of Perth, Australia, won acclaim for his role as a co-star in “Brokeback Mountain”, a 2005 film. The film, based on a short story by Annie Proulx about two cowboys who fall in love, won critical acclaim. Reviewing the film in The New York Times, the critic Stephen Holden wrote, “Mr. Ledger magically and mysteriously disappears beneath the skin of his lean, sinewy character. It is a great screen performance, as good as the best of Marlon Brando and Sean Penn.”
Mr. Ledger met the actress Michelle Williams while filming ‘’Brokeback Mountain.” The two actors fell into a romance and moved to Boerum Hill, Brooklyn, where their comings and goings were widely noted by paparazzi. They had a daughter, Matilda Rose, who was born on Oct. 28, 2005. The couple separated last year.
In an interview in London for an article published in November, Mr. Ledger said told The New York Times, ‘’I feel like I’m wasting time if I repeat myself.” He said in the interview that he was not proud of his latest role, in Todd Haynes’s “I’m Not There,” in which Mr. Ledger was one of a half-dozen actors depicting the musician Bob Dylan. ‘’I feel the same way about everything I do. The day I say, ‘It’s good’ is the day I should start doing something else,” said in the interview.
Calls by The Times to Mara Buxbaum, a publicist for Mr. Ledger, and Steve Alexander, the actor’s agent, were not immediately returned this afternoon.
Thomas J. Lueck contributed reporting.

Have they confirmed it was a drug overdose?

It'll be awhile before the official autopsy results are made public, but I think it's safe to assume so for the time-being.

"Pills were found in the vicinity of the bed," police spokesman Paul Browne told CNN.

"This is being looked at as a possible overdose, but that is not confirmed yet."

The pills appeared to be over-the-counter sleeping medication, said police spokeswoman Barbara Chen.

As for Heath. If it was suicide then he is pathetic. He just left a little girl who will never know her father. We have all been through rough times get help.

I know that was harsh but as a father to be I can't fathom leaving my daughter on this earth with no dad.

I am there with you Kaylor. It hit home I am having a kid when I finally saw what she looked like today, or sort of looked like. Can't imagine leaving a baby in this world without me. No matter how down I get or how rough things get I have a life to take care of. Ledger obviously didn't take that into account.

CNN reporter just commented that he'd been mentioning in interviews the past several weeks about having sleep issues since playing the Joker, and that he'd made comments about taking multiple ambien and only getting an hour or two of sleep.

Sounds like he probably was just so damn exhausted he took as many as he thought would get him to sleep and it happened to be too many for his body to handle.

Its a real shame, he was an excellent actor, but like many other great actors they find it hard to separate themselves from the roles they play.

This should have no impact on The Dark Knight however, they'd wrapped on filming and its in post production, Ledger was actually off filming a different movie in England.

You know what the funny thing is? I don't have a problem with Pez (or that thread) per se. And on that same note, I'm not that huge on Ledger. Batman was filmed, and that's all I care about. If I had to choose, I'd rather the Pez thread stay.

But what I (and others, I believe) would like to see is some consistency. There was some big thread about ethanol and beer that wasn't football related that got to stay too.

http://www.orangemane.com/BB/showthread.php?t=65154&highlight=ethanol

I'm not trying to personally bash anybody, but it's just odd that certain non-football threads are OK but others aren't. I'd like to know the criteria on how those decisions are made.

Just have to wait and see what the autopsy finds. But still may be a week waiting for blood work on drug levels in his blood.

He said the Joker role was, and probably would be, the most fun he ever had playing.

Yup. As was mentioned above, he was already well into the filming of another movie (a fantasy, with Christopher Plummer).

Last night on the news, they were playing clips from a very recent interview (supposedly his last) where he was discussing another movie he recently finished about the life of Bob Dylan. He was not at all happy with the movie and was clearly on drugs during the interview. He was very fidgety, looked strung out and was speaking very oddly. At one point, they asked him about his daughter and he somehow steered the conversation towards death and how he was now ok with dying in the near future because he felt like he would live through her a little.

It was very creepy.

Confused? Here's What You Need To Know About Heath Ledger's Death (http://gawker.com/5002477/confused-heres-what-you-need-to-know-about-heath-ledgers-death)

Some of the details surrounding Heath Ledger's death yesterday have been a little murky, with conflicting reports from various media outlets. Let's answer some of your basic questions: Q. Did Ledger commit suicide? A. Police have changed their tune on that, saying his death appears to have been accidental. His family's statement described him as "life-loving." [SkyNews (http://news.sky.com/skynews/article/0,,30200-1301916,00.html)]
Q. Was Ledger found in the apartment of an Olsen twin? A. No. Mary-Kate Olsen's people were called by a masseuse at the scene. Olsen told her to call the authorities. [PageSix (http://www.pagesix.com/story/heath+s+antidepressants+and+ambien)]
Q. Which medications were found in the apartment? A. Sleeping aids Ambien, Donormyl, Zoplicone and anti-anxiety meds Xanax and Valium. They were not, as was reported, "strewn around" his dead body, but in bottles and packaging in the bedroom, bathroom and rest of the apartment. [NYP (http://www.nypost.com/seven/01232008/news/regionalnews/heath_ledger_dead_983449.htm?page=0)]
Q. What did his autopsy, performed this morning, indicate? A. The results were inconclusive, further tests to indicate a cause of death will take another ten days. TMZ reported (http://www.tmz.com/2008/01/22/heath-had-pneumonia/) last night that Ledger may have had pneumonia. [CNN (http://www.cnn.com/2008/SHOWBIZ/Movies/01/23/heath.ledger.dead/index.html)]

Kansas Baptist Church Intends to Picket Heath Ledger's Funeral Because He Played Gay Character jesus .... wtf

A radical Baptist church in Kansas known for picketing the funerals of soldiers who perished in Iraq said it intends to protest Heath Ledger's memorial service with signs claiming the actor died and is in Hell because he played a gay character in “Brokeback Mountain.”

Shirley Phelps-Roper of the Westboro Baptist Church in Topeka said that she and other members will picket Ledger’s United States memorial services, not those held in his native Australia.

“You cannot live in defiance of God,” she said. “He got on that big screen with a big, fat message: God is a liar and it’s OK to be gay.”

A press release circulated by the church references Leviticus 18:22 in the Bible, which states that “thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination.”

“Heath Ledger is now in Hell, and has begun serving his eternal sentence there,” the Westboro Baptist announcement says.

Heath Ledger took the role as the Joker very seriously because he didn't want to disappoint. The guy is a great actor and even he admitted back last summer that it was going to take his very best to pull off the Joker.
It was reported a number of times throughout the last few months that he has had some serious sleeping problems throughout the movie production and even after it was done.

Apparently he tried taking sleep medicine and a it only helped him gain minimal sleep, so he took more. When he took more, his body was already weakened due to the lack of sleep and possible pneumonia

Walked by the memorial again today (I work in the neighbourhood). Just very sad. It's a true loss. People are shocked not because they're celebrity obsessed (I could care less if Affleck kicked the bucket) but because of his talent and because he was known to be a great, old fashioned person.

this week we lost Heath Ledger, a man we never highlighted on this show, so you haters stop digging, he never did anything wrong, he was a good man and it's a trajic loss

I was very impressed with the tribute.
