View Full Version : Norv fired James Lofton.
In a surprising move, receivers coach James Lofton was let go by head coach Norv Turner this morning.
Lofton said, "I was stunned. I loved coaching here."
Turner simply told Lofton he was "going in another direction."
Lofton, a Hall of Fame receiver, coached here since 2002.

Correct me if I am wrong, but wasn't Lofton up for the Raiders job last year? Or was that the Chargers job?

I think he interviewed for the Raiders job two years in a row.

Faider gig. Infact he had the job, but then AL got greasy on the contract and it fell threw.

It's about time. Dude was a great player, but terrible coach. Been calling for his head for years. Jackson's "sudden" improvement didn't happen for no reason- he started actually learning when we signed Chris Chambers.

Most Charger fans haven't been satisfied with Lofton's results here. Yeah, he hasn't had a lot to work with outside of Jackson and he has finally emerged but I think they wanted to see results a bit faster. Jackson always had the talent but he had the same fundamental problems year after year that Loften never seen to get corrected.
I think they were hoping for much more out of Buster Davis this year and Malcom Floyd has been very disappointing and it seems Norv has been annoyed by Floyd's and Legadu Naanee's route running.
I don't see this as a major loss. He wasn't horrible here but the position could definitely use upgrading IMO.

Until Aj drafted Jackson, the position was virtually ignored for years There's some truth to that, more like the lack of talent at the position, but we did take Caldwell in the 2nd. a few years back. Him not making a stink to keep Welker, I could go on if you really want, but I've been saying for awhile the guy is not a good coach.

Chambers shows up and a few weeks later Jackson is doing all the stuff right that we've been complaining about since his rookie year - catching with his hands, not his chest, attacking the ball in the air, coming back for the ball, etc. Not a coincidence in my opinion.

I actually did, and have said as much. But lately, it seems like VJ's gonna make the turn afterall. He'll need to do it for a year, but he was playing great in the playoffs. More than likely the IAA switch to pros vs. Brandon playing at UCF. And I like the way Marshall runs with the ball after the catch.
Maybe he just needed the right coach. :)

I was thinking more along the lines of 102 receptions and 1,325 yards receiving, the type of stuff that matters in football.

I'd take Brandon Marshall in a heartbeat but to be honest I would be a little wary of his off the field stuff.
Jackson and Chambers are a great duo though and compliment each other well. I'm definitely happy with those two as the starters for years to come. If Parker can come back healthy next season or Buster Davis shows significant improvement, the slot position will be solidified and the WR position should become a strength for the first time in a very long time here.

I'm really digging our WR situation now, too. Chambers and Jackson are studs, Gates will be back healthy, Davis was an A.J. Smith 1st rounder (we all know what that means  ), and Parker can hopefully return to form and be a solid possession guy. Lots of talent and depth there.

I agree, the window is still open for us.
Unfortunately though, what's to keep the Patriots from doing the same thing next year?
Is Welker, Stalworth, Moss, etc, going anywhere? If not we could be looking at another Patriots Super Bowl next year, which would suck.

He had a couple good games last year, but breakout is a gross exaggeration. His fundamentals sucked. The last 4 or 5 games of this season was when he really started playing well, and the playoffs was his "breakout."

Immediately after his retirement, Joiner was named the Bolts’ wide receivers coach. One of his star pupils during his five seasons as WRs coach (1987-91) was Anthony Miller, who had a breakout 1,252-yard, 10-touchdown season in 1989 and earned Pro Bowl selections following the ’89 and ’90 seasons.

Joiner’s most recent coaching stop was with the Kansas City Chiefs, spending seven seasons (2001-07) as their wide receivers coach. In 2007 Joiner oversaw the development of rookie Dwyane Bowe, who was the NFL’s leading rookie receiver with 70 catches, 995 yards and five touchdown catches. Bowe averaged an impressive 14.2 yards per catch during his rookie season. Bowe and Davis were college teammates at LSU and fellow first-round draft picks in 2007. Joiner’s stable of wide receivers in Kansas City also included veteran Eddie Kennison, another LSU grad who racked up back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons in 2004 and ’05.

Let's put it this way. One of the biggest problems Turner had with the receivers this year was that they would often run the wrong routes under Lofton. Joiner should hopefully fix that problem.
Why?
Because all the routes that Joiner ran when he was with us are the same routes that Norv uses in his present playbook. Joiner, in fact, is the template for what he wants his receivers to be in his system.

Well whether it was pointers from Chambers or just the fact that Chambers being there pushed Jackson harder, it worked out well for Jackson's development. In retrospect, I'm sure that Phins fans are thrilled about picking up some low second rounders for Chambers and Welker.
