View Full Version : Philip Rivers listed as doubtful for this Sunday's game.

Philip Rivers' knee injury is more severe than what has been described by the Chargers, and the quarterback has been listed as doubtful for Sunday's AFC Championship Game.
Sources told The San Diego Union-Tribune today the quarterback also has a partially torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee in addition to the sprained medial collateral ligament the team has made known.
Rivers practiced today and is still expected to test the knee Sunday morning to determine whether he can play against the New England Patriots.
“It'll be day-to-day,” General Manager A.J. Smith said. “We're going down the same road as (Antonio) Gates.” Gates played Sunday at Indianapolis after a pre-game workout to test his dislocated big toe, but was largely ineffective. He also has been listed as doubtful for this Sunday's game.
Rivers was on the practice field this morning for the first time this week, wearing a brace on his right knee. There was no brace on his left knee, on which he has played the past 5½ games with a sprained MCL. During the portion of practice open to the media, he threw passes with the first team.
“It always falls on the player,” Smith said. “The doctors and medical people do so much. The coach and general manager are on the outside. The ultimate decisions is the player's – unless he physically can't go or it will do harm for your future.”
Smith, as he always does, declined to discuss the specific injury. But he said, “We would never jeopardize any player.”
A sports medicine expert said yesterday it was possible for Rivers to play with a partial tear of his ACL.
“When you get into the category of partial tears, no one really knows,” said Dr. James Gladstone, an orthopedic surgeon and chief of sports medicine at Mt. Sinai School of Medicine. “There have been studies out there that suggest if (the ACL) is 50 percent intact, you may be OK. The only way of knowing is you play.”
Even if Rivers does play, the fact his knee is further damaged could affect how long he plays or how much trauma he can handle during the game.
It will also affect how he moves.
The ACL, which along with the PCL forms a cross at the center of the knee, works to stabilize the knee. Its health affects quick starting and stopping and change of direction.
What is not known is the severity of Rivers' tear in either his MCL or ACL. Sprains are classified in three degrees – as a stretching (first degree), partial tear (second degree) and total tear (third degree).

Ya, I heard Skip Bayless this morning calling down fire and brimstone cuz of that. I used to like Rivers, but that really pushed me over the edge. If HOA has to get after you, you are automatically a grade A a-hole in my book. Now that I don't like him, I'm going to start convincing myself that he sucks and Billy Volek is actually carrying the team.

rivers had 3 tds and 264 yards before volek stepped in.
football is a team sport...it takes a team to win.
Rivers is a good QB. He has a mouth that gets him in trouble...but hes 24-7 as a starter in reg season, has been to the pro-bowl and has gotten to the playoffs both years as a starter, and has a winning record in the playoffs (2-1)...So with that said, YES, HE IS BETTER THAN CUTLER!!

The whole NFL is feeling that way about Rivers right now. He's just a total a-hole and eventually it's going to come back to haunt Rivers and the Chargers. When you make the enough defenses hate you it will spread through the NFL. Players who haven't even played the Chargers will already hate Rivers before they even play him. Not only not like him but actually want to put him out of the game. Eventually the Broncos will improve and when they do I'm sure they will have something extra for Rivers.
The good thing about being a Bronco fan is we have a Championship under our belts and have been total crap. We waited a long time as fans to be a decent team, then we waited to have a good team, then we waited for a great team to win it all. We can easily wait the 1-2 more yrs it will take to get Cutler some better players and get the defense squared away. When that time comes the Chargers more then likely will still be a team that has never won the Superbowl. We are loyal, patient fans and we can outlast any Charger bandwagon fairies.

I got no problem with the punk arguments. He opens his mouth he needs to be prepared to take the heat. No doubt likeable QBs like Favre get a few breaks and pullups after the ball is thrown from the defensive linemen and Rivers should probably expect full followthrough from charging linemen over his career. Game is hard enough, as a coach's son he should know not to bring that much extra attention in his direction. But he is what he is.
That being said he has owned the Broncos and with 27 wins in two years it is hard to argue he is not an NFL caliber QB.

Odds are good they've made a Chargers one, as well. There's just no need to show it to the public. The boxes of them will likely be sent over to Goodwill and the poor kids in Africa like they do with all the other leftovers.

elway didnt win but played in close to 1/3 of the superbowls in his time in the nfl and could have played in more....the steelers debacle in the '80s. the bills, 3(?) missed field goals and the jags debacle. that makes your 3%
chance even more impressive for our guy.

Point welll taken. Elway is top 5 alltime and in the early years had he more talent around him could have ended up with as many rings as Bradshaw. Even Bolt fans are smart enough not to try and compare our guy with Elway.
Your O'fer status of getting to SBs since Elway left is an indication how hard it is to get there without someone very special calling the shots and in the end what a stud Elway really was.

Marino was a stud and owned the record books.... but found it difficult to make it to a SB after his sophomore season... and never won one. In his last 2 playoff losses, Miami was blown out 100-10 (38-3 loss to the Broncos; 62-7 loss to the Jaguars).

Chargers have very little chance of beating the Patriots. I doubt this yr will be special for them. I also doubt next year will be. Chargers IMO have a bunch of players on the team that are more into celebrating after every decent play then they are about doing what it takes to win the Superbowl.

The Chargers aren't even close to being a Super Bowl team. They won a mediocre division, got to play the worst team in the playoffs at home and then beat an overrated Colts team that they matched up well against. They are going to get destroyed by the Pats and they have no reason to think they will get any better next year. Enjoy the flash in the pan AFC Championship game, the Broncos had their own two years ago, and trust me it isn't anything to get excited about. At least we have a couple Lombardis to fall back on in the last decade or so.

It doesn't matter to me if Rivers plays or not. There are still the dickwads on D , most notably Steriod Merrimen, and that alone makes it impossible to "cheer" for Sandy Eggo.
I just hope the Pats have a nice little dance after the game again this season so I can watch LT and Co cry like little girls.
I find it strange how Rivers was walking without even the slightest limp on the sidelines last week, yet, he could'nt muster up the nutsack to actually play. It's the playoffs. If it's Brady, Manning, Favre, hell, just about any other starting QB, if they can walk, they will play.
Outstanding job by Rivers charging the Colts fans after the game. He couldn't move like that on the field? Gutless, classless dirtbag!

Sorry, I guess I should have asked if you are going to make a few token **** talking posts about how the Broncos didn't make the playoffs and then disappear for a couple months.
I was here last year and be here this year. If the Chargers lose, I might give the guys like you a couple days to beat your chests and talk about how the Broncos are going to take back the division (like last year), but I'll be back.
