Titans want to talk to Heimerdinger about O-coordinator job

In a move aimed at solidifying the future of franchise quarterback Vince Young, the Tennessee Titans are looking to their past, and are pursuing former offensive coordinator Mike Heimerdinger to fill the vacancy created by the firing of Norm Chow earlier this week.

Heimerdinger, 55, is currently the Denver Broncos' assistant head coach/quarterbacks. The Titans have formally sought permission to speak with Heimerdinger, who previously was the offensive coordinator for Tennessee coach Jeff Fisher for five seasons (2000-2004), and that request is expected to be granted.

It is believed that Broncos coach Mike Shanahan, who calls the offensive plays for his team, will not stand in the way if Heimerdinger, who is under contract, wants to return to the Titans for a second stint on Fisher's staff. Should Heimerdinger depart, Denver likely would pursue former Georgia Tech head coach Chan Gailey to replace him, the Rocky Mountain News reported.

Gailey, who was fired by Georgia Tech last month, has been an offensive coordinator and head coach at the NFL level in the past. He was recently interviewed by San Francisco for the offensive coordinator opening that was eventually filled by Mike Martz. Gailey is also a candidate for the Kansas City Chiefs' offensive coordinator spot.

He previously worked six seasons for the Broncos.

Chow was dismissed by Fisher after three years and following a 2007 season in which Young regressed. The Tennessee offense statistically ranked just 21st in the league in 2007 and was No. 27 in passing. Young threw just nine touchdown passes and compiled a quarterback rating of only 71.1.

Were he to move to the Titans, Heimerdinger would almost certainly have full control of the offensive game-planning and the play-calling during games, responsibilities he does not possess on Shanahan's staff.

In his earlier stint in Denver, Heimerdinger was the wide receivers coach for five seasons (1995-99), before moving to Tennessee as offensive coordinator in 2000. After five years with the Titans, he became the New York Jets' offensive coordinator in 2005, then rejoined the Denver staff in 2006.

Even after his departure, Heimerdinger and Fisher remained close friends.

If Heimerdinger exits, he would become the second high-level assistant to depart the Broncos since the end of the season. Defensive coordinator Jim Bates recently resigned after declining to accept a demotion to linebackers coach, and was replaced by secondary coach Bob Slowik.

Gailey spent numerous years working with the Broncos during the Dan Reeves Super Bowl years, so he knows Shanahan real well. I think he was on the D side of the ball working with Collier and Fatso Phillips, but they have a good relationship.

Gailey also coached the Cowboys the year TD broke off consecutive 60+ yard TD runds in week 2 of 1998. I was there live, man that was off the charts!!!!

Professional leagues
He moved up to the NFL ranks the next year, when the Denver Broncos signed him as a defensive assistant and special teams coach. The team made three Super Bowl appearances during his six-year tenure. He then became the head coach of the Birmingham Fire of the World League of American Football, where the team made the playoffs both years he was coach. After a one-year stint as head coach at Samford University, he returned to the NFL with the Pittsburgh Steelers. He started off as coach for the wide receivers, then moved up to offensive coordinator for the 1996 and 1997 NFL seasons. Gailey was then hired to take over a struggling Dallas Cowboys squad, one that had faltered under Barry Switzer during his last year. Gailey's Cowboys won the NFC East in 1998, and made the playoffs under his two years at the reins, although they failed to win a playoff game. He then returned to the offensive coordinator role, this time with the Miami Dolphins.[5]

a guy with Gailey's resume is going to want primary control over the offense, from design on down to play-calling. I'd be very surprised if he got that from Shanny. I'd also be surprised to see him take the job unless he did.

Why not Chow? He's worked with some pretty good QBs. I think he could take Cutler to another level.

On a side note. Sirius NFL Radio just stated that the Broncos infact have given the Titans the clearance to talk (basically sign) Hermy.

Time to start talking draft picks. C'mon Titans, how bad do you want him? A 6th? A 5th? Ok, I guess I'll settle for Haynesworth, Bironas and a future third round pick.

I think Gailey can also help Jay-C. He worked as Elway's qb coach back in 89 and was the OC until 90.

He's a very balanced play calling OC. averaging 30+ more rushing plays than passing a year.

I hope Shanny hires a OC and allows that person to call the games. It can be shanny's offense, just let some one else call the plays.

Becuase I'm sick of seeing 2 straight fullback draw plays at the goalline...

Hell Jeff will get him for free...Shanny may give him a pick. There too good ole freinds.

I bet this deal has been worked out. Hermy goes back to Tenn, and Shanny brings in Gailey.

Personally I always thought Jim Fassel played a large part in Elway's progression as a QB... dude was really hardcore on the mechanics

I can agree with that. Lets say Dungy steps down, what do you see happening with Tom Moore? I want a OC that will have that type of effect on Cutler as he did with Manning.

I am fine if they don't hire anyone. I personally think the staff is too bloated right now. I like the idea of a few less coaches and shanny being a little more hands on.

Yes really, I don't get the "Shanny needs power taken away from him" crowd. We had our most success when he was running the show alone (with a yes man Kubiak at his side). The guy is a wonderful offensive mind, why not let him use it. I think the message is getting distorted with so many coaches involved in things. I would rather have one guy (who has proven to be very effective) in charge of things, and guys around him who will carry it out.
