We talk alot about players and coaches, but what about our superlative scouts? Here's the list from the Bronco website. I looked at their backgrounds and their "bios" and gave them totally arbitrary "grades" based on my pathetically humble knowledge (outsider fan only). Feel free to add your own based on whatever additional wisdom you have.

This is the area where we really need to get better at!

Jim Goodman - Director of Player Personnel....head scout '02-'05: do we have any one left from those drafts? D

Eugene Armstrong - College Scout...scout for Texans last 3 years...too new to grade

Bobby Beers - College Scout...scouts the West...prolly got us Hamza and Paymuh....C+

Scott DiStefano - College Scout...scouts Midwest...been here 26 years....got us Gold prolly....C

Jeff Goodman - College Scout...does Southeast...ex Gator...got us the Miami and Florida types...nepotist...B-

Anthony Kelly - College Scout...does Northeast...too new to grade

Cal McCombs - College Scout...second year..does Atlantic coast...really extensive experience...wonder if he's a reason for a better draft?....B-

Greg Miller - College Scout...10 years with Broncos...3 with NFL drafting...seems to be part of the insiders group since the 97 season...C-

Cornell Green - Scouting Consultant...21 years scouting for Broncos, now apparently part timer...ex Cowboy....hard to say over that much time..old timer...C+

Mike Bluem - Director of Football Administration...coordinator of college scouting 2000-2003....D

Chris Trulove - Coordinator of Pro Scouting...pro scout from 2000 on....got us Champ and Lynch, but what about all the others....? D

Jimmy Spencer - Pro Personnel Assistant...first year...too new to grade

Dave Bratten - College Scouting Coordinator...seven years...player evaluation?...C-

Mike Lombardi - Personnel Assistant..came from Raiders where he was their player evaluation guru for 8 years.....too new to Broncos?....

Mike Mascenik - Player Personnel Assistant...4 years with Broncos, mostly appears to be videographer....dont know how much he actually evaluates...C

Fred Fleming - Pro Scouting/Director of Special Services...no bio....C-(based on general health of team's scouting)

Betsy Klein - Executive Director of Player & Organizational Development...no bio...C-

Meghan Zobeck- Player Personnel Assistant...no bio...C-

First of all, Fred gets an A...Director of Special Services is just as nice way of saying Team Asshole and he definitely does a great job at that.

I think that whole deal about only one player left is very decieving, it doesnt take into account people that played well but were traded for a nice benefit for the team that is still here, doesnt take into account people that played well but just left in FA for greener pastures/people let go due to the money crunch in 2005..people who played well but were let go due to injury...etc. If you look at our drafts from 2000-2004, you'll actually find a number of hits that fit into these categories.

That's pretty interesting. I have to digest that a little bit. Lomardi rings a bell, I've heard that name before, and it seems to me I don't like the ring of that bell.

This is problematic in that there are more good players concentrated in certain parts of the country.

Versus interviewed Jim Goodman today on the sideline of the Hula Bowl. He's a good ole boy with a thick accent.

Who actually makes the PICK? are you seriously telling me that the reports ulitmately sway Shanny, he gets a man crush on someone's potential and then signs off, the scouts are just there for factual reasons, and if one does decide to challenge MIKE THE MIND, then they get their ass FIRED and sent home and labled as a malcontent, don't believe that, do some research!

WAKE UP PEOPLE< SHANNAHAN IS THE FRIGGIN PROBLEM, not the SCOUTS!!!

what this shows is that the real engine of talent "creation" or "identification" has been underevaluated by staff and fans alike!

from shanny's presser:

On evaluating free agents --
"One thing that you've got to understand is since I've got the final say does not mean that I go out there. I don't have the time to do that. We've go people that have been on the road that have evaluated every guy that's out there in pro football. We've got five guys on the road doing that. They'll come back here in about three weeks and we'll go over all their recommendations in free agency, height, weight, speed, what they've done, their character. The pro scouts that have been looking at these guys, we'll put them in a pecking order and then they'll recommend which guys would come in and help our team, evaluating our team as well on a daily basis. We do the same thing in the college draft. I don't even know all the guys that are out there. All these guys have been evaluating these guys for the last year. They've been on the road every day. Even though I get the final say, there's no way I could do that without guys that are out there constantly on the road making recommendations of what they think is in the best interest of your football team."

On evaluating current players on Denver's roster --
"No question about it. We have these guys that are out on the road that are never here. They come in and evaluate guys, they compare them to other guys in the league, that are never here, they don't know there personality, they don't know if they're good guys, bad guys just based on play. That is something you have to do. You've got to get an independent contractor that looks at your players because sometimes you like a guy because of his character, for whatever reasons, it's really a good cross-check for us."

I don't think you can give an accurate grade to these scouts when you have no idea how Shanahan utilizes their advice. I seriously doubt that Shanahan goes by everything his scouts tell him. He probably makes decisions based on their advice (via Ted Sundquist) and then looks at tape, and then decides who to pursue and who not to. In other words, they may recommend a great player and Shanahan does not heed the advice.

Do you really think he has time to evaluate his own players, every other player in the NFL, and every collegiate prospect as well before mini camps start up?
