View Full Version : Could Huckabee win Michigan?

(CNN) -- Until this week, Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee had not run a single ad in Michigan, and had no paid staffers in the state.

<!--endclickprintexclude--> He did not have a campaign office. He had not sent out a single piece of direct mail.
Meanwhile, his rival Mitt Romney -- who announced after his second-place New Hampshire showing that Michigan was his top priority -- has run nearly $3 million dollars worth of television ads in Michigan.

And John McCain (http://www.cnn.com/ELECTION/2008/candidates/john.mccain.html), fresh off his New Hampshire win -- and with the backing of two of the state's largest papers, the Detroit News and the Detroit Free-Press -- has been keeping pace in recent polls with the well-funded Romney effort.

But just as in Iowa, a grassroots network of conservative Christian activists and fair tax proponents are, improbably, keeping Huckabee (http://www.cnn.com/ELECTION/2008/candidates/mike.huckabee.html) in contention for the top spot in the GOP (http://topics.cnn.com/topics/u_s_republican_party_politics) primary here.

"We laid the groundwork," says Gary Glenn, one of the leaders of the movement. "The fact that he's even in a position to threaten Mitt Romney (http://www.cnn.com/ELECTION/2008/candidates/mitt.romney.html) in his native state is a real statement to the depth of support he has here."

Huckabee's been riding a months-long wave of good news in Michigan. Just before Labor Day, the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers made him their pick in his party's presidential (http://topics.cnn.com/topics/u_s_presidential_election) primary -- a rare nod to a GOP candidate that might not mean much in other Republican contests, but carries some weight in this heavily unionized state.

The Fair Tax movement -- which has given Huckabee its enthusiastic backing -- announced a major political push in Michigan (http://topics.cnn.com/topics/Michigan) in 2008, looking to get an anti-tax measure on the ballot this fall.

LaMar Lemmons, the Detroit state representative who helped organize the successful Democratic crossover effort that helped McCain beat Bush here in 2000, recently launched Democrats for Huckabee -- the sort of group that can make a real difference in a state where the lack of party registration allows for large-scale crossover voting.

The move may have an exaggerated impact this cycle, since the national party penalized the state party for moving up its primary and most of the major Democratic contenders pulled their names from the ballot.

And this week, Minuteman Project founder Jim Gilchrist is making a swing through the state to tell Republican primary voters upset over illegal immigration to support Huckabee, making appearances in working-class cities from Flint and Saginaw to Kalamazoo.

But as in Iowa, the biggest secret to Huckabee's Michigan success seems to be his depth of support among evangelical Christians. Typically, somewhere between one-fifth and one-third of Michigan's Republican primary voters are self-identified evangelicals. A few weeks ago, a Detroit News survey found that number may be as high as 40 percent this year.

So pro-Huckabee organizers say they are focusing their entire effort on turning out evangelical church goers. They plan to call every evangelical pastor in the state over the next few days. Those ministers can't endorse any candidate from the pulpit -- but they can tell their parishioners that "it's their Christian duty," to turn out on primary day, said Glenn. "And we know who they'll be voting for."

To help drive that message home, thousands of volunteers will be dropping leaflets and waving signs in church parking lots across Michigan this Sunday. Glenn says there will also be several news conferences across the state through the January 15 vote featuring groups of pastors announcing their personal support for Huckabee, an organized wave of callers into Michigan's Christian radio stations, and phone trees targeting the state's largest churches from within.

Glenn is a prime example of the sort of well-connected activist that has been essential to Huckabee's success. The president of Michigan's chapter of Don Wildmon's American Family Association, he co-wrote the state's successful anti-gay marriage amendment, which drew close to 60 percent of the vote in 2004. That effort also updated his already-packed addressbook with a new group of politically-savvy conservative Christian contacts eager to assist a presidential candidate who backed his own state's version of that measure.

Glenn also represents another key demographic in the Huckabee grassroots army -- home schoolers, mostly Christian conservatives, who have overwhelmingly supported the former governor. In Michigan, the group is politically active, and large, with thousands attending the community's annual state convention.

"We don't have to persuade them to vote, we just have to get them to turn up," Glenn said Thursday, pointing to their Iowa counterparts' role in Huckabee's victory there. "Why mess with a winning formula?"

You know folks, it seems like Huckabee has the grass root movement
that the Ron Paul activists dreamed they would have in this election.
They both basically started nowhere in the polls with no money.
But they have gone in entirely different directions. Ron Paul has
tons of money and no votes and Huckabee has tons of votes
and no money.

This is no surprise since the evangelical base has either Thompson or the Huckster to choose from ......and since the Huckster is a minister and Thompson hasn't courted them at all, well...it was a slam dunk for Mike.

And that's okay because all the prayer circles in the world won't help him in Michigan though...it's really Mitt's last stand and possibly the only state we's got a real chance to win anything in now.

As for Paul, we should just take his money and run for the Libertarians. I'm sooo upset with that guy for not doing this. He has no chance in hell at the GOP nomination and yet his exposure and cash infusions could be getting the Libertarian message out to the mainstream like never before instead of being ignored and considered a joke in the narrowminded, dogmatic world of the GOP.

It isn't just the evangelicals that are for Huckabee. The Fair Tax proponent
are also solidly behind Huckabee. And I could be wrong, but Huckabee
seems to be the only candidate on either side who is pushing Fair Tax.
That's huge, and they are running ads for Huckabee. People have
skipped right over that because the MSM just concentrates on
Huckabee's evangelical support.

I kind of suspect he may eventually. There's a reason he has so much
money and isn't spending it right now.

That's because Wall Street absolutely hates the Fair Tax thing.......they see the Huckster and Edwards as the primary threats on what's left of the economy.

You've got to have both the God Squad and Wall Street on your side to make it in the GOP and the Huckster only has one arm to punch with in this boxing match.

True. But Romney has only the other arm. Not sure who McCain has.
I guess he must be kick boxing. Hillary is the only Democrat running
in Michigan. I guess McCain gets the Democratic and Independent
vote.

The conservative base is beginning to rise up and expose Schmukabee for what he is. The media likes him because he is beatable in a national election and isn't conservative.

Of course the Wall Street so-called conservatives are rising up against
Huckabee. He is exposing them for the frauds that they are. These
are the people that only favor the rich and throw the working people
a few social issue bones to get their votes. But the working people
are smart enough to see through that this time and they aren't getting
fooled this time around. Now they have a chance to get one of their
own in office, instead of just a Bush clone like Romney.

I'll believe that when I see it......Wall Street rarely gets beat in the GOP.

He's Edwards only with prayer circles....he'll meet the same end as his DNC counterpart as well.

I simply cannot believe a true to form evangelical would vote for a candidate based on religion. For the most part, it's the absolutely worst reason to vote someone, the "electability" factor would be the other worst especially during the primaries vice general election. I can't help but think at least half of america is a bunch of lazy sheep unwilling to do the necessary homework on the candidates to enable them to make an informed decision. Disgraceful is the overall characterization of this entire mess as it unfolds...dman

McCain will eventually get both the Evangelicals and Wall St...but only by default.

That's where I'm placing my bets as far as the GOP nod is concerned. I'm thinking Obama will nad most Indies and that camp will split evenly if Hillary cries her way into the DNC nomination.

Change isn't necessarily better. Nixon was a change from the Johnson years.
Jimmy Carter was a change from the Nixon years. Bush was a change from
the Clinton years.
