The next time you're at Gray's Lake Park, step off the path and look around a little.
If you're lucky, you'll spot it: A tiny door with bronze hinges and knob, carefully built into a cottonwood overlooking the lake.
Not even Des Moines Parks and Recreation officials have a clue who made the little wooden door or how long it has been in the tree.

Greg Hicks, 35, of Ankeny, also chanced across the door in late October while walking at the lake with his father and three young sons. Seven-year-old Connor Hicks said they were sitting at a picnic table eating lunch when his dad noticed it.
"It was pretty weird how a tree could have a door in it," Connor said.
At first glance, Hicks thought there was a plaque at the base of the tree. But when he walked over for a closer look, he found the door.
He turned the small knob and found a compartment inside, equipped with notebook paper and a pencil stub.
There were also a few folded notes, printed from a computer, signed "Seamus O'Grey."

Like most people who've seen the little door, Hicks was impressed by the craftsmanship.
Encased in a fake knothole stained brown to blend in, the door seems to fit seamlessly into a space near the bottom of the tree.

Hicks said the day he and his sons discovered the door was their first visit to Gray's Lake.
It almost felt like a gift.
"It's one of those little treats in life to stumble across something like this," he said. "It's kind of like a reward for paying attention to things that aren't just on the sidewalk."
