I couldn't put it down. This book will blow your mind. The writing is masterful. IMO, this book will become a classic of American literature and the pinnacle of the apocalyptica genre.

It's still reverberating with me. I'm going to read it again in a couple of weeks, I think.

My wife (who is a much faster reader then myself) read the entire book in one night she said that she could not put it down and stayed up REAL late to finish the book. This was right before Xmas. We still talk about it.

The strange thing is that if I had known what it was about or that it was a "Oprah pick" I probably would not have read it. I for some reason thought that it was the story that No Country For Old Men was based on.

I picked up another fantastic book, Jim Harrison's, Returning To Earth.
Harrison is my favorite author and this book is one of his best. Then again, I say that every time he writes a new book.

Hey Bronx, I'll send you Orange_Beard's copy if you like ;D

What's that chick-flick where a group of women/girls send a pair of jeans along from one girl to the next, and each one adds a new note in the pocket as they go along? "Sisterhood of Traveling Pants" or something like that? We could pass this book along with new handwritten dedications from each of us ... incendiary political comments, apocalyptic survival strategies, unrestricted free agent advice... :~ohyah!:

My kid drew on the out side of the pages with an orange crayon.
That should be good enough.

Hahaha - can't wait to see it. It won't be easy, but I'll try to match his purity of heart in my inscription.

From the "THIS IS TOO WEIRD" Department:

I'm in the steamroom at the YMCA Thursday afternoon, and a guy there whom I talk with about books asks me what I'm reading now. I say, almost verbatim, "A buddy on the Internet is sending me a book this week - something apocolyptic, can't remember the title." Without skipping a beat, he says, "The Road. Cormac McCarthy. I just read where Ridley Scott is negotiating to make the movie."

The guy didn't even wait for me to answer, he knew he was right. I said, "are you on the Orange Mane or something?" he says, "orange what?"

Pretty weird. I'm gettin' kinda scared to check the mailbox, OB ... Uhh

They're in talks for with Guy Pearce (L.A. Confidential) or Viggo Mortensen (LOTR, Eastern Promises) to play the father. Casting the kid is going to be their toughest challenge. Haley Osment is too old now. I can't believe Hollywood would have the guts to include everything that's in that book.

I am a big fan of Viggo, he would be great.

Clive Owen would also be good for the role. He has the rough look. Viggo may be to tough guy looking.

Got it, OB! Thanks much (the orange crayon is barely noticeable - which is actually a bit disappointing).

I think my contribution to this book might be ... when I go down to Floyd Little's car dealership to get his autograph next week, I'll have him hold up the book and take a photo. Then I'll print out a 3x5 inch copy of that photo and carefully paste or tape it inside. Some trick, huh? A pic of Floyd holding the book you're holding?! Whoa, duuuuude.......

Good to see McCarthy getting some notice after years of great writing. They did make All The Pretty Horses into a movie a decade or so ago, but I don't think many people read the book. For those that loved The Road, you have to read Blood Meridian. It's even better.

He also wrote "No Country For Old Men," which was just released as a film by my favorites, the Coen Brothers. (At least I'm pretty sure it's the same "NCFOM")

It is one and the same. Great book, also. The movie has not appeared in my area, but by all accounts the Coen Bros. have served up another classic.

You really can't go wrong with McCarthy. He's toiled in obscurity for years (well, outside of high brow academic circles, at any rate), so it is awesome to see him get the recognition he deserves.

Sorry, that's the one Coen I never dug ... in fact, I thoght it kinda sucked. Terrible story - the kidnapping was dumb, the artist was dumb, the Stranger was dumb, the Malibu sheriff was dumb, the taxi was dumb, the toe was dumb, bowling opponents were dumb. Their other films are art - Blood Simple, Hudsucker, Fargo, Man Who Wasn't There ... but Lebowski seemed like they threw it together one weekend while drinking.

Are you kidding? It's probably the greatest comedy of all-time! Yes, the plot is a bit convoluted, and intentionally so. The movie was in part an homage to the detective flicks of the 40s and 50s, which almost always had tangled up plots. So many quotable lines:

"I too dabbled in pacifism once. Not in 'Nam, of course."

"You treat objects like women, man!"

"Nihilists? **** me. I mean, say what you will about the tenets of National Socialism...at least it's an ethos."

The dialog is some of the best ever written. How could you not love that movie?

I have to agree with Inferno about Lebowski. Just having him standing in the aisle of the grocery store, looking at the milk in his friggin bathrobe and slippers is enough for me. The whole thing was a hallucinogenic farce. "That rug really made the room" and the room is a fuggin dungheap. Ha!

Kind of a shame they have to over-cast the smallish role of the wife/mother ... with Theron it it, they'll undoubtedly over-amplify her importance.

Part of the problem with movies always are the viewers' expectations.

I freaking ADORED Blood Simple, Barton Fink, Hudsucker, Fargo ... so I thought I'd get something along those lines when I went in. Instead I got an overly-silly, not very funny comedy. John Turturro as the prissy bowler in a pink outfit with a silly accent should have embarrassed him, it was not at all funny (at least not to me).

Come to think of it, I didn't care for Raising Arizona much either (can't stand Nicholas Cage). Maybe it's just their sense of humor I don't relate to ... because I also freaking loved Man Who Wasn't There, O Brother, Miller's Crossing ... but didn't like Ladykillers much.

??? Everybody's different

Sure, everybody's different. But if you don't think The Big Lebowski is damn near the funniest thing you've ever seen, you're just plain in poor taste. The Jesus is freaking hilarious, what are you talking about?!

The Jesus (John Turturro): "Let me tell you something, Pendejo. You try your crazy ****, pull your piece out on the lane, I'll take it away from you and stick it up your ass and pull the trigger till it goes click."

The Dude: "Jesus."

The Jesus: "You said it, man. Nobody ****s with the Jesus."

How the hell can you think that isn't funny Ha!
