I really want to update my digital music library and I am looking for suggestions and recommendations from the forum. I know there are some extremely savy Music and Tech people here and want to know what you all use or would recommend.

Thanks for the help,

Med

What do you mean, "update"?

I want to add more music at the best prices, downloads, Subscriptions to preview whole songs instead of samples. That kind of thing. I killed Real a few years ago but just added Rhapsody on a free 14 day sample. However, I do NOT want to keep a subscription indefinitely like most want you to do to keep unpurchased music.

Am I missing something out there? Or, how do you all go about obtaining music these days?

Med go to this site: http://www.pandora.com/

Its online radio but it taylors play lists to your tastes. So if you like the Clash it finds bands that have similar themes. Its great for finding new artists. As for where to purchase I sell out to the man and buy from iTunes as its easy to sync with my iPod.

Are you going to pay for music or "acquire" it from other sources?

Pay and acquire permanently with a good digital interface to burn Cd's, organize playlists, and interact with an mp3 player. I want legal stuff at decent prices and a good software program behind it.

BTW, thanks for all the help so far. I knew you guys would be a great help.

I know I am going to get hammered for this but I use iTunes. I have about 110 gigs of music. Works great. The iTunes store is easy to use.

One side benefit is that I always get asked what I want for christmas and other holidays. I just say an iTunes card. Easy to get for the person and I get lots of music.

That's what I do! I use iTunes for all my music and organizing and such. I can purchase the entire album or just a song at a time. Then, I just make sure to have all my songs backed up so that if my hard drive crashes, I have the music somewhere else to restore from!

Another good thing that iTunes is now doing is complete the album. Lets say you bought a song but weren't sure about the album. If you later want the album it sees you have one song already and you pay for the rest of the album. In the past you would have to either buy each song individually or have a duplicate.

As long as we'rer on this, I'm tired of ripping CDs with Windows Media Player and having low volume poor sound quality in the resultant mp3 files. Is there a better, higher qaulity way to rip?

There are tons of applications out there Buff. Go over to www.cnet.com and search CD burning programs. Read the reviews from CNet they are pretty good.

Read his first post before the burn one. He is complaining about Windows Media Player.

Itunes does rip good sounding music though. Seriously hit up cnet. There are tons of ripping software.

Itunes is fine and dandy if you are using an Ipod. Just keep in mind that any DRM-protected content that you get from itunes will only play on an ipod or your computer(s). I have an 80 gig Ipod just for my truck (because of an ipod direct connect Kenwood DNX 7100) so obviously I have to use Itunes. I've been more impressed with the video section of itunes. I've downloaded entire collections of my favorite shows -- Chapelle, Arrested Development, etc... Dora (for my daughter).. and so on...

I prefer non-protected high-bitrate mp3. It saves a lot of hassle in the transer and sharing of music between computers on my home network. I have probably 500 gigs of music that sits on a centalized file server -- which I can acess from any of my computers on my wirless-N network. Pretty flippin sweet. I used to napster like crazy back in the day.. but now I either rip CD's that I buy or download from Amazon.

Amazon has been the best place that I've found to legally download DRM-free mp3 content. They have a decent collection, though not as comprehensive as itunes. Their music is encoded at 256 kbit/sec, which is alot better than most sites... and seems to be significantly better quality than the more compressed iTunes fromat. I havent used their video option because it seems to require a specific Tivo unit.... and I'd rather stick to itunes to keep the copy-protected stuff centralized.

Hope that helps

You need to change the rip settings on media player. Crank the bitrate up to 320... its what I do. You can boost the volume as well if you want. Sounds like you might be on default settings... which is set at crappy.
