FALCONS SNIFFING AROUND SHANAHAN?
Posted by Mike Florio on December 27, 2007 5:09 pm

A league source tells us that the Atlanta Falcons are exploring the possibility of pursuing Broncos head coach Mike Shanahan.

As the rumor/scuttlebutt goes, Shanahan would run the show in Atlanta, as the head coach and de facto G.M.

Though he’s still under contract with the Broncos, the thinking is that owner Pat Bowlen might be happy to let him leave, given the struggles of the team in 2007.

Another name that has emerged in Atlanta is Chiefs V.P. of player personnel Bill Kuharich. It’s possible that both Shanahan and Kuharich could join the Falcons, with Kuharich serving as the G.M. but Shanahan calling the shots.

Ridiculous, Shanny cannot be in a better situation and it would look like he quit.

I believe that it might look attractive to him to go to a college team or to a decent NFL team. I don't believe for a minute that he would want to take over that team.

I don't know. I've read that he likes it here, in part because of Jay Cutler's potential. He'd have a similar situation in Atlanta with Joey Harrington. :)

I can see how that would be a very attractive situation for Shanahan.

Go to a 3-13 team whose franchise qb just went to prison, whose headcoach walked out before the season was up pissing off the players and fans, and get to live and coach in a city that was nearly wiped off the map by a hurricane just two years ago. Who wouldn't be interested?

I agree, when Shanahan is done coaching I expect he see himself as this franchise's Bill Walsh, but in active role. He will always be part of the team as long as Bowlen owns the team

It's been how many years that John Elway has been retired and Shanny has been looking for "the guy" and now that he has a lagit young QB, he's gonna dash off to the Falcons???????????

Get real.

Although, I would not put it past Shanny and his always thinking self, to ask a souce to start a rumor so it puts the fear of losing him in the head of Bowlen................nah. The dude has 2 losing seasons in 11 years with Broncos and he's not going anywhere.

If there's 2 things Shanny covets the most, it's a stud at QB and a stud corner. I think he has the best corner right now and an upcoming stud at QB. I just don't see it.

2 first rounders and a starting DT.

Wouldn't that be great?

The NFL changed the rules, though, after Al Davis 'traded' John Gruden to Tampa Bay.

Pat Riley is a great basketball coach, but a coach can only work with a group of players for so long before he's burned up all of his motivational techniques on that group. That's why Riley had to leave the Lakers. Once he landed elsewhere, he again enjoyed a greater level of success.

I wonder if the same principle applies with Shanny.

Not saying it does... but it might.

Mike Florio is a ****ing hack! Jesus people wake up to his schtick! He's a monkey with a keyboard (like many of us) he as an issue with Shanny and bangs on him when he can.

He makes up 50% of his stories and steals the other 50% from other media outlets.

NFL Network's Adam Schefter reports the Falcons have been looking into the background of 49ers assistant head coach/linebackers Mike Singletary and could set up an interview with him shortly.

Adam Schefter, now theres a guy I trust! He's a class act and isn't a prick in person like Florio.

If I was in Atlanta I would be interested in hiring Shanny. I would also be interested in hiring Dungy, Bellicheat, Holmgren, and any other HC that has an established track record as a winner. This story has all the "no-duh" revelations of a HS newspaper announcing "Chess club member wants to ask the hot chick to the dance." However, that doesn't mean she has the slightest interest in him.

The only thing that gives this story the even smallest hint of creedence is that Shanny, unlike the other coaches I mentioned, has had a rough go of 2007.

Shanny would LOVE to go to a team that HAD Dan Reeves as HC a few years back and take it to the super bowl...

theyl'l have that jailbird QB back in 16 months...MAX. He could turn vick into a respectable QB....who would then get busted for dope or something else.

PFT is horrible. I think they're going to tell us that Shanny is looking to leave every year, and name 6 or 7 teams that he may go to. After about 7 or 8 years of this, they may finally be right. And then they'll say, "See? We TOLD you!"

Dumbass Alex Spanos once hired Steve Ortmeyer away from the Raiders. At least he thought he did. Ortmeyer cashed Spanos checks, but remained loyal to Davis. This was culminated in the horrendously up the **** trade of perennial Pro Bowl OT Jim Lachey to the Raiders for John "Feet of" Clay and Napolean McCallum.

Thankfully, Davis pissed away the value gained in that crooked deal by sending Lachey to Washington straight across for Pig Face Jay Schroeder.

If you got to choose either a) shanahan leaves and cutler leaves or b) they both stay

Which would you pick?

It been 2 damn seasons since we were in the AFC championship, and you're talking about our franchise being RUINED?

I hope you look at some other franchises and tell me what's really "ruined."

How many seasons does it take other Franchises to even be THINKING about the playoffs? It's been 2 since we were 1 game away from the SB! We lost to the winning team too!

On TOP of that, we made it that far with JAKE PLUMMER. JAKE PLUMMER!!!

Ok I will summary for those that don't have the insider

First that he go and states when ask if Shanahan is still a great coach, that yes he is but, he lost some power in personnel (ELSID comment: HUH?), but he might be head to Atl with more power (ELSID what is he going to be part owner???)

Second someone ask him to explain what he means with the first comment:

Kretz: There is a strong rumor that Blank has been sniffing around Denver with the thought of bringing Shanny to Atlanta as GM/HC.. (ELSID isn't that tampering???)

Finally: Some one ask what Shanahan connection to Atl and why would he go there?

Kretz: it's just that some people think that a coach can go stale after a certain amount of time in the same place.. But the over riding factor would be the money (ELSID13 Shanny's contract requires him to be one of the top 5 paid coaches in the league, who much more money can they give him)

I haven't thought much of Shanny since he shelled out so much money for Dale Carter. I smelled a run of stupid coming on then. Not long after that he gives Griese - a third year player, maybe the slowest player I've ever seen at the QB position, and coming off some bad throwing shoulder injuries - a huge contract. Says he reminds him of Joe Montana. But he refuses to give Shannon Sharpe an FA contract. Says he can get the same production out of two TE's (Chamberlain and Desmond Clark) cheaper. Cuts both Byron and Clark, grooms Jeb Putzier as the TE of the future. The list goes on and on.

First day draft pick busts year after year - Toviessi, Middlebrooks, Eric Brown, Nash, Pierce, the Clemson boys, Chris Cole, the midget from Florida. I can add first day picks that never reached the potential their draft status would indicate - Foster, Kenoy Kennedy, Lelie, Ian Gold, Tatum Bell.

I get tired of hearing, "But he drafted/acquired Terrel Davis, Lepsis, Nalen, etc." Those are guys they had no idea if they'd work out or not. First day picks are the guys they were sure they had talent, so it really doesn't say much about talent-evaluation if the guys you thought would be blue-chippers are so-so at best, and the guys you figured were special-teamers turn out to be good.

I will say though that Shanny certainly has some credentials. I choose to give more weight to his stupid side because I think he's a jackass, loses his cool too easy when the team is behind. He certainly can get his O playing well for the first two quarters when he has the right personnel. And sometimes that's enough to win a lot of games when your ST's and D are also playing well. I think it's ridiculous for him to filter what the OC recommends before relaying it to the QB. It slows the O down and costs them TO's all too often when they're in a rhythm and have the D not knowing what the heck is coming next.

Overall, Shanny as HC has been above average in terms of winning seasons, but in terms of winning playoff games and AFC West Titles, he's equaled the worst stretches the team has had since 1977. So that doesn't say a whole lot for him.

I'd like to see a fresh young mind come in at OC and inject some new plays into the O, some new thinking. Maybe Shanny needs to reverse the roles - he recommends some plays now and then, and the OC calls the game he wants.

The bottom line is the way this team has been run since 1999 isn't building on the legacy built from 1977-1998, and that is a real shame on Bowlen and Shanahan.
