ENGLEWOOD — There is one game remaining in the Denver Broncos’ season. The biggest goal might be getting quarterback Jay Cutler to the offseason without more bodily harm.

Cutler has been sacked nine times in the past two games. He limped to his postgame interview Monday after being sacked four times by San Diego and hit on other pass attempts. He said his injured left knee won’t keep him from playing Sunday against Minnesota.

The offensive linemen aren’t pleased with how they’ve blocked.

“Hopefully we can turn it around and protect Jay better,” left tackle Matt Lepsis said. “You never want to see your quarterback on his butt that many times.”

Like the rest of the offense, the line has been inconsistent. After allowing only one sack in each of its first two games this month — against Oakland and Kansas City — Denver gave up five to Houston. All San Diego’s sacks came in the first half as the Chargers built a 16-0 lead.

The blame for some of the sacks doesn’t lie entirely on the line. Tight end Chad Mustard gave up a sack to Houston end Mario Williams, injured tight end Daniel Graham gave up a sack Monday and another sack came when Chargers safety Clinton Hart blitzed and ran through running back Travis Henry.

Protecting Cutler is easier when the Broncos can run the ball effectively. In the past two games, Denver fell behind and had to pass on most downs.

“Once you get down early in the game, everyone knows you’re one dimensional,” center Chris Myers said.

On Monday, running backs Selvin Young, Cecil Sapp and Henry combined for 50 yards on 16 carries. The lack of a running game also can be attributed to poor play by the line.

Denver had 15 yards on three rushing attempts in its first drive before a fumble by Cutler — who started to scramble because he was under pressure — led to a change in the offensive plan.

“You’ve got to establish the run, especially against this football team,” coach Mike Shanahan said. “We tried to run it early, got a couple of first downs and had that turnover, and that was the last time we could get a whole lot going in the running game.”

Cutler led the team with 42 rushing yards because he scrambled a few times when the pass blocking broke down.

“I would have done the same thing,” Lepsis said. “Guys were coming at him left and right. I would get out of there too.”

The line is young. Myers and guard Chris Kuper joined the starting lineup because of season-ending injuries to veterans Tom Nalen and Ben Hamilton. Right tackle Erik Pears is in his second year as a starter.

The lack of continuity and the inexperience has led to ups and downs.

“One game we’ll have no sacks, and then the next game we’ll give up four,” Myers said. “We’ve got to be more consistent. Next week against Minnesota, that’s our last chance to make a statement.”

The offense showed no dimension of any sort other than the first couple plays of the game..Thanks Oline.

The funny thing is, WHO CARES if you are one dimensional, especially if they want to blitz. Hold down the fort, keep the guys off the QB and let him pick them apart.

NE IS/HAS BEEN predictable. They've been throwing it all season like they don't care. The OL isn't letting Brady get touched. It's that simple... we need more talent on the OLine, especially at tackle.

The opponants are beginning to see that Cutlers not as sure of himself or that mobile. Plus his emotions and mouth must have set the Chargers off in that last game.

I agree, and after rewatching the game last night and hearing Shanny talk about the OLines of NE and Dallas, I think he plans on upgrading. In fact, I wouldn't be suprised if he went after Flozell Adams again. He offered him good money a few years back and Adams' game has improved since then. I also wouldn't be suprised if he went after Gross or Foneco ;D Last but not least, I think you'll see him draft an OT as well. Ryan Harris would be getting playing time by now if they though he could protect Cutler, I'm concerned he's not gonna pan out. I know he's young and had some injuries, but the lack of progress is alarming.

If a football team has weaknesses/is inexperienced "in the trenches", that team is going to be pushed around all over the field. Improved O-line performance almost always translates into improved QB performance.

No pride on this team, not one ounce. These guys have given up on each other and it shows on every play as 1-2 guys give up early or make a half hearted attempt. It's laughable, disguistingly laughable.

For the Minny game, I hope Mike leaves Cecil and Graham in for the entire game. At least let us get out of this dung heap of a season with our QB intact.

Where did you get that from? Jay is plenty mobile and for a 2nd year QB has shown outstanding confidence in himslef to make the difficult throws. Lastly, I love a QB who shows some emotion during the game and were you on the field to hear Jay say something that set the Chargers off? ???

Dude, trust me when i say this. This guy is not a Bronco fan. Go through and read the first two pages of posts he has made. He was already declaring that we would get blown out by the Chiefs in both games this year. Ive seen Bronco fans give credit to the chiefs but this dude was like sucking some major chief nutsack there. The way he was talking you would have thought the Chiefs were undefeated this year.

Cutler needs to get rid of the ball...get some quicker release times and move to create space. If its not there, which it usually isn't with Denver's current 1 WR-1RB-3TE, then throw it away but right at Mike's head for calling such a ridiculous formation.

Thats unfair to cutler. First of all why should his emotions set off the chargers? He was frustated with his team and was trying to fire them up on his sidelines and I don't see anything wrong with it.

Regarding the trash talk, the way i saw it was this - Chargers were taking late hits from the beginning. Now may be even bronocs were doing the same but i can only go by what i saw on tv. Remember Weddle was called for perosnal foul before the altercation and Lepsis was on the ground when some one reached down and poked in his eye. I don't know if this was intentional or not but it looked bad on tv and this all happened before the altercation.

At some point cutler has to stand up for himself right? What's wrong with complaining to refs about a late hit? Did you see on one play they twisted his knee when he was down on the ground? what else could he have done except draw the attention of refs in that case? Would they not continue the late hits if he had not drawn the attention of the refs?

I do have issues with cutler's play - he let this affect his play in second half but he is getting unfair criticism for all the other things.
