View Full Version : Paul Ernster and John Mobley are heros! (aka The Paul Ernster Appreciation Thread)

How in the world could two completely unrelated guys be heros?

How especially could this be the case after Ernster had one of the worst games, at any position, I have ever seen?

Well, flash back to 2002. Ian Gold is coming off an all-pro year as a special teams ace, and he subsequently earns a starting LB spot. With that, John Mobley moves over to the Sam (Bill Romanowski's spot), and Romanowski moves to the Raiders.

Romanowski was always a player I had to force myself to like. Good riddance.

Today, Ernster takes the place of Todd Sauerbrun - another guy who is tough to like. Even as Ernster embarrassed himself further with every kick, I found myself appreciating that we didn't have a steroid-abusing, law-breaking muscle head on our team.

I'm not convince that Travis Henry should be gone. If he comes back healthy, he's our best bet for 2008, in my opinion. Thus, I will spend the offseason figuring new ways to justify cheering for someone that just isn't a good guy.

But, at least for now, we have one less cockroach, scurrying around the clubhouse.

Broncos need to seriously scout the draft for a punter we can start for a chunk of years. Here are a few thay may be possibilites.

I grabbed those of scouts.com top 5 for the draft so I can't say I have watched all of them. I did watch Brooks a few times and I thought he looked like a pro caliber punter. We should grab one late in the draft and hope for the best because Ernster is a total spaz and the worst punter I have ever watched. The fact we gave up on Nick Harris makes it even worst.

I always loved Romo. He was the one player you knew would bring it 120% every time he put a helmet on. There isn't one player on this defense right now that could carry Romo's jock. Not one man in the front seven has his tenacity or fire to hit people in the friggin mouth. The Broncos need a serious gutting a 2-3 yr rebuilding plan or we can look forward to a decade of losing.

His first punt of 18 yds was epic. My uncle and I just looked at eachother and laughed. Then what was his next punt 24 yds? 6 yd gain on the punt well at least he shows improvement. Ugh if I were him I would have just bypassed the locker room and bought my own ticket home.

I never liked his actions on the field at times (spitting, injuring teammates, etc) but you can't deny what he brought to his team. He is not afraid to confront his teammates about their lack of intensity as he leads by example. That is exactly what is needed on the field. I watch Romo on the Bronco show on Fox Rocky Mountain and you can see that the Broncos sorely miss a player like him. He still exudes that attitude when he talks about the current Bronco team. I really think Romo would literally be kicking his teammates in the behind if he was on this team. It reminds me of Mike Curtis of the Colts when I was a kid. This is an intangible you can't put a price on --- and I don't see any Bronco that brings this intensity/toughness type of leadership.

I agree with everything you said, except I wish we could find a way to dump Henry. 1) He's quickly approaching 30. 2) At any time, I feel, he is going to piss hot. 3) He's always getting injured in games and coming out. 4) I think Young is quite likely better or at the very least the difference is negligable. But simply put: he is hard to like just like Sauerbrunn.

I would love to see drago make it to the broncos...it won't happen...don't get me wrong drago is an awesome punter. Averaged 45 yds for 4 years. Never made the stats because 1 NDSU wasn't an eligible team. 2 never had enough punts. Drago is also good at directional punting. BUT in his 4 years at NDSU he never did kickoffs. That is the one thing that the Broncos need is either elam to start kicking off or a punter who does kicks.

The whole Paul Ernster ordeal was comical.

This team has turned into a bad water cooler joke.

I'd prefer Geoff Price from that list myself. His aim is a little sporadic but he's got an NFL caliber leg no question. Put him at altitude and he'll be sailing punts and kickoffs through the uprights.

Agreed...that was one painful performance. He should be shown the door this morning after that one, along with whomever brought him back in (and if it was Shanny, then he should be fined) I don't give a damn if it's Christmas or not.

It's too bad that Sauerbrun is such a bonehead....more irritating that any attention seeking flavor clown, his is a story of wasted talent and there's just no worse sin than that in these parts.

I am no fan of Todd Sauerbrun. But I'd take him any day over what Ernest did. They should have let Elam punt the ball after that 18 yarder. Hell, Shanny should have suited up and punted the ball.

I got a kick out of them saying the 8.75 cents just cost Denver 40 yards of field position/

I will ask my work mentee about Ernster this week. She was watching the game with his family, it'll be interesting to hear how they reacted to it. I know he hasn't been kicking in a while and he had worked out for Seattle a couple weeks ago.

I actually can't wait to see him punt this Sunday. It's like a golfer with the yips. I wouldn't have guessed an unblocked punt going negative yards would be possible. I think we just might see it on Sunday.

The part that's ridiculous is that last year, at least we could say, "Yeah, he's not the best punter in the world, but at least he kicks off well." So, what do we go and do? We hire ourselves a guy that kicks off, as well.

The way we've dealt with this is like a keystone cops routine.

After Xmas dinner last night all the men were sitting watching the game and we were all cracking up punt after punt. The funny thing was I wasn't even upset about how horrible the punts were I just laughed them off.

At this point in the season you can only do one thing and that is laugh. It was hilarious watching that happen. And the MNF crew actually made me laugh for once with the 8.75 cab fare.

After that first punt me and the guy next to me just shook our heads, what a horrible punt.

I can't believe how much crap I took defending Todd to the "pro-Ernster" crowd over the last month or so here. I could understand it if they were criticizing him off the field, but the debates were focused on their "on field" performance. The guy is a useless stiff.

Well, I told you so.

Didn't you know, the game isn't played on the field, everyone here cares more about what you do off the field than releasing players for what they do on the field. I'm gonna laugh my ass off when they resign Todd this week and give him a longer contract.

Dude, we're 6-9. If you can't laugh about Ernster's performance Monday night, then you need to blow off some steam.

Do you have some sort of theory about how we make the playoffs if Sauerbrun is punting Monday night? If so, do tell!

Unreal.
