While tonight's game was an afterthought for me (as it was for most of the team) ... I have to say it was gut-wrenching to see Lynch looking distraught on the sidelines. It's long bothered me that we have two class acts like Bailey and Lynch on this team and we just refuse to put any talent around them.
It wouldn't be so bad if Lynch didn't love being a Bronco so much. He and his family just love the hell out of Denver and you can tell it pains the guy to be out there... unable to make up for the scrubs we've stuck around him.
I've loved watching this guy play for us. He's near the end of the line, but I sure hope he gives us one more season. You never know what could happen. As far away as we may seem... a few changes can make a big difference. We've seen it happen in Denver before.
Here's hoping we get to enjoy John's fire, talent and leadership for one more season. Unlike most of this unlikable team... he represents my idea of what Broncos football is all about.

I appreciate Johns tenure here, but he'll always be a Bucaneer in my eyes.
I remember when he came to the Bucs in 1993. They were known as the Yucs because they wore these god aweful things (heres Lynch sporting them)

then along came coach Dungy, Warren Sapp, and Derrick Brooks and walah, they all changed the foundation of that entire team that was known mainly for letting Steve Young go and not signing Bo Jackson.

You say tomato.
We passed on Kearney and signed Bly. We shuffled Cleveland Browns in and out the door and while we did finally take a couple of linemen in the draft this year, we've hardly been serious about improving the front seven.
You can call it "backfired" and I'll say that we willfully spent our money on guys like Graham and Bly instead of trying to land some dominant front seven talent.
Hence, as even the idiots on ESPN pointed out tonight... you've got a billion dollar secondary wasting away because there's no talent up front.
How long have I been saying that you can't build a defense from the back.. forward?
So, you're welcome to your backfired opinion. I think you lay in the bed you make.

I will have a little fun with this. Given John's age, his injury history and the state of the Denver Bronco defense, role play with this idea and tell us what you would say to him to convince him to stay for another year. I am not sure I can think of anything.

We passed on Kearney .
Good. This was the correct choice. He's already around 32 years old...you want to pay 19.5m in GUARANTEED MONEY for essentially a one or two year rental? Sorry, I'm glad he chose Seattle's offer over ours. We've made the investments at the DE position...significant ones....now we have be patient and watch them develop and get better. It's not a bad idea to have some vets in there to make the transition smoother, but not at the price Kerney demanded, and certainly not for a transitional player. I'm glad we did not win that bidding war.....there are often consequences for instant gratification.

He said he just has to feel healthy and like he's playing well. I certainly think he's playing well enough if we had anyone in the front seven worth a squirt.
I think it boils down to what we do in the off-season. He won't come out and say it, but my guess is that he'll want to see some changes before he puts his old body in harm's way again.
To me, there's no doubt the guy still has the fire... but I also think he's smart enough not to get out there with a crap-can squad like this when he's 38.
Who can blame him.

It's just been a tough season. It's easy to point fingers in hindsight, but we have followed a fairly unsuccessful formula the past few off-seasons... particularly with regard to the lines.
Shanny really needs to get back to the roots of what built his first championship.
Beyond that, to the subject... I just hope we can send Lynch off with a better season than this. Maybe that will be enough to motivate him to play again.
Like I said, the guy really considers himself a Bronco. We're lucky for that.

It has been pretty easy to point fingers all season long as it played out. As far as Shanny getting back to the roots of building his first championship, I think Elways is too old and TD to beat up to contribute much ROFL!

There are situations I'd keep him out of... but he still looks quick enough to the ball. Add to that, he can actually diagnose a play unlike most of our guys out there.
It would be a perfect year to draft a safety talent and have him work his way in... and split some time with Lynch.

We didn't pass on Kearny, he took a more lucrative offer from Seattle. It always easy to play Monday morning QB, but at the time you would been screaming that we overspent on 30 year old DE coming of injury.
Shanahan attempted to bring DL talent to the table - Adams/Moss and draft 3DL min to learn the position. And added in Bly to improve pass coverage. T

Yeah, I never liked the Bly acuisition/signing. We needed to get rid of Foster and getting value in an exchange also made Bell expendable but of all the positions, CB was not an area of dire need. I liked Williams better than Bly and I liked Foxworth better than Bly. I would just rather give one of the younger guys a chance plus I think Foxworth is a better character guy.

So foxy could get toasted all season long?
I am with popps on this, they need to make a legitimate attempt to put some solid players around Champ, DJ, Elvis. The rest of our D is 2nd tier NFL if that. Moss is a wait and see and so is crowder. We need a DT that can take the pressure off of our linebackers, especially DJ. We need at least one OLB that is a legit OLB. The only legit OLB that we had this year was playing MLB. Making a move on 2 playmakers would make this defense 100% better. I think we have a nice young nucleus on D just like O. If you start with DJ, Champ,Moss and Elvis, and build around that it really should be that hard to become a contender.

I agree, but fans are overly sentimental about him...they'll always want him to return for one more year, just like Rod Smith, no matter what his abilities are or his condition is.
Two words for John Lynch....secondary coach.

I am very surprised about the play of Bly. He is the Achilles' heel out there in the passing game. Nearly every time any team needs 10 or so, they send their taller WR over Bly and there you go. Bly was a terrible waste of money. He lost games. No two ways about it.
I do think the Dline needs a bit more help. Yet, the younger players need time to grow up, and maybe there will be something there.
The Oline had it's terrible problems. I have to agree that RT is an absolute swinging gate. But I don't know if the middle of the Oline is gonna get better or not, but these guys are on the learning curve as well.
Shanahan seems tired to me. Some might say he is old, an needs a long break. His O has been way too predictable of late, and I had thought that was because he ran the O for the people he had. That may or may not have been the case last night. But I do think he needs to back off on his play calling and let someone else do it. It seems clear that Kubes was the O coordinator the last couple of years he was here. Shanahan may be out of practice?
I don't know if he should be "replaced" or not, that is not up to me. But I do think he needs to re-think his O game plans.

No safety help explains a lot of Bly failings this season....at least, that used to be the Bailey excuse whenever one got by him anyways :giggle:

Well, we didn't pony up to get him. Trust me, Mike has no problem getting Bowlen to work out deals when he really wants players. He managed to dump boatloads of money on Bly and Graham.
I do agree with you that he got a little more serious about the line in the draft last season. Unfortunately, we've needed to do that for about a decade.
We also need to try to work out something for a real, vet DL who can play a little... not just try to grab scrubs who should have retired. (Rice, Adams.)
There's a difference between a vet with some mileage left like Taylor, Kearney, etc... and a guy who looked like they should have retired the prior season... Adams.

Aw dang, I must have missed them when I was shielding my eyes from the suck. In hindsight, he also celebrated for a calendar month on a play where he really didn't do anything, thought he was gonna take a penalty. Ah well, he's a decent special teamer.
