Hi all. I missed the game due to traveling, but I just saw the highlights for the Skins/Vikes games.
On one play late, the Skins fumbled the ball under center, and the Vikes recovered. But Joe Gibbs challenged, and because the Vikes had 12 men on the field, the Vikes were assessed a penalty and the Redskins were given the ball back.
Maybe they explained it during the broadcast (again, I missed it) but I was under the impression you can't challenge things like penalties. If the refs blew a penalty call, I thought that was just bad luck, and you couldn't do much about it.
Enlighten me, rules gurus.

You can challenge the number of folks on the field, it was one of the things the committee spelled out about use of replay

Personally I think the rule needs to be tweeked, because like last night if the player is running off the field and isn't in the play then why should it be a penality. Some of the DT just cannot move that fast.

If that's the case I want our 96 Super Bowl trophy back :)

i thought one of the rules was "IF the offense makes a substitution, then the defense must have adequite time to be able to make a substitution as well. Since WAS made a sub, this shouldn't have been a penalty then right?

The penalty wasnt challenged. The Fumble was and in the process of determining if it was a fumble (it was) a official can determine other infractions in that review. In this case, Minny had too many men on the field and thus the play was for nil.
