ENGLEWOOD -- There is no remaining hope for a playoff spot, but the Denver Broncos’ memories are intact.

The last time the Broncos faced the Chargers, San Diego’s performance had Invesco Field at Mile High almost empty by the fourth quarter. The Chargers won 41-3 on Oct. 7, the worst home loss for the Broncos since 1966.

With few other team goals remaining, the Broncos can at least try to rally around getting some payback against the Chargers on Monday night.

“This is the NFL and some people think it’s above pride and issues like that, but it’s not,” safety John Lynch said. “That was humiliating and embarrassing.”

San Diego was 1-3 when it came to Denver on Oct. 7. The Broncos were 2-2 and had a chance to open a two-game lead against the defending AFC West champs.

That was a long time ago. The Chargers have already clinched the division title. The Broncos’ season has gone in the tank. They are 6-8 and were eliminated from the playoffs Sunday.

The Chargers’ blowout was a key to San Diego turning around its season.

“The game in Denver went our way and it got us going,” Chargers coach Norv Turner said.
Even though San Diego has the division wrapped up, Turner said he will play any healthy starters. The Chargers would probably like to get the third seed in the AFC, because that means it could delay a game at first-seed New England and avoid a first-round game against streaking Jacksonville.

The Broncos probably won’t be full strength. Tight end Daniel Graham (ankle) and linebacker Ian Gold (knee) didn’t practice for the third straight day. Gold is doubtful and Graham questionable on the injury report. They have the benefit of an extra day before the Monday game, and coach Mike Shanahan said he hoped they could participate in a short practice today.

“It gives them a little more recovery time, and we’ll see how they do tomorrow,” Shanahan said.

I dont want to hear about revenge. Its kind of ridiculous to mail it in like they did earlier in the year and talk about what youre going to do later. Id rather Denver worry more about showing up every week then get revenge when the season, for all intents and purposes, is over. "Revenge", yeah ok. Maybe if the beat San Diego, we should throw them a parade. LOL.

Gotta agree. The Chargers have our number for whatever reason. We sweep the Chiefs and KC plays SD very close. Yet, we get killed by SD. I'm not sure what KC does better then us against SD but, for whatever reason, we can't keep SD from scoring.
It's only been 3 games but SD has absolutely crushed us in those 3. I see no reason why that will change tomorrow. 44-17 SD

Because they have more talent. Thats what several years of drafting in the top 10 gets you.

I agree. That's not what I was trying to figure out though. My question is how do the Chiefs play SD so closely and we can't even stay in the stadium with the Chargers.

Two years ago we swept them when, in all likelihood, they had more talent than we did. In the last couple of years though weve been sort of transitioning to younger players, namely QB and DL and we havent matched up well vs SD. SD doesnt have the greatest WRs which would work in our favor if not for the fact that they have the best TE in the league...which makes our CBs kind of useless. Plus our OLine has been either getting old or is short on talent while SD has a pretty strong front 7 on defense.

But, but . . . Denver has the Mastermind! What happened there? SD and Oakland have won the AFC West what, every year since 1998 except for one?

It speaks to Shanahans acumen as a coach that Denver has won like it has in spite of poor draft spots and poor draft selections. When Denver won SBs a lot of the players on their offense werent drafted before the 6th round. The guy can do a lot with a little but the talent acquisition for a few years there has been a problem.

SD will probably win the AFC West next year also. Denver is way behind them in all three phases.

It all boils down to the matchups the differences are very subtle.
The donks matchup better against KC because of their ability to cover Gonzales and KC’s propensity to try and run outside. The donks lbs run well and their strength is not allowing RB’s to get outside. Gonzales is also easier to cover than gates. He’s not as fast or as physical as Gates. So when Gonzales is matched up against a LB or safety it’s not as big of a mismatch as trying to cover gates. So, KC plays right into denvers hands by design.

On the other hand SD runs inside more than people think. Tomlinson is murder between the tackles and he can break it outside. Running inside against the donks is the golden ticket. The other problem is Tomlinson is great at making the backside cut against LB’s that over pursue… the donk LB’s do this all the time. Couple that with an undersized DL and you have multiple problems without factoring in Gates. Gates is faster than Gonzales and is more physical. So, he can easily beat the donk LB’s and is too physical for your safeties.

The donks are forced to put 8 in the box against SD... this opens up a bigger mismatch against Gates. Put 7 in the box... Tomlinson kills ya... you need a Michael Huff to cover Gates... Speed and size with good cover skills!

Actually Max - the broncos have been very good on covering Gates, first because they had Big Nickle going with Brandon (lost for the year due to knee injury), then Champ when they play him man up. The only time they seem to struggle with Gates is when the go into soft zone coverage or when have Gold (to short) attempt to play him heads up.

Where Denver struggle that last two season is stopping LT on the edges -via the toss or by the screen.

hopefully LT can get me 30 points and Marshall gets me about 15...then I am the Fantasy Football champ!!!!

Oh...and I hope we lose a close one. Its better for us to lose these next 2.

Ummm. . . that has little or nothing to do with it.

Michael Turner: 5th round
Antonio Gates: Undrafted FA
Mike Scifres (Pro-Bowl punter): 5th round
Nick Hardwick (Pro-Bowl Center): 3rd round
Shaun Phillips: 4th round
Darren Sproles: 4th round
Kris Dielman: Undrafted FA
Eric Parker: Undrafted FA

We have a GM who picks talent in the low rounds and FA that other teams overlook, plus he uses the top picks wisely. That's why we are loaded.
