Ticketmaster, NFL ink licensing deal for online ticket resale service

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Ticketmaster plans to launch a Web site next year where people can resell tickets to pro football games, the latest push by the event ticketing company into the lucrative secondary ticket market.

The company signed a multiyear deal with the National Football League that includes branding and promotion for the site, Ticketmaster said in a statement being released Tuesday. Financial terms were not disclosed.

West Hollywood-based Ticketmaster already operates separate, so-called ticket exchange sites for 18 NFL teams, which allow ticket holders to resell their game tickets online.

The latest deal moves those teams and adds four others to the new portal set for debut sometime next year, said Ticketmaster, which is owned by New York-based Internet conglomerate IAC/InterActiveCorp.

Resales are a growing slice of the ticket market for sporting events, concerts and other events, but Ticketmaster lags other online ticket resale outlets such as StubHub, which is owned by eBay Inc., and auction sites such as eBay itself.

``It's fair to say we're an underdog in the category right now,'' said Eric Korman, Ticketmaster's executive vice president. ``We need to really aggressively compete to win dollars and grow ahead of the competition.''

Ticketmaster plans to guarantee the resold tickets, which are sent to buyers electronically, just like it does with its regular primary ticket sales.

The company is counting on that security feature and the NFL branding to woo prospective ticket buyers and sellers.

``It's going to be safe, it's going to be reliable, it's going to be efficient,'' Korman said. ``When you show up at the gate, you're ensured that ticket is going to be valid.''

The company profits on the secondary sales by charging the seller and the buyer a percentage of the resale price.

That last sentence about charging a percentage of the price may make this new website irrelevant. They don't need to do this with other options out there to sell online.

Stub Hub does the same thing and they are doing just fine. But i always try Ebay first.

I hope this is a signed contract throughout the NFL just like MLB has with Stubhub so Broncos and Patriots cant come after season ticket holders. Then I can give the big F U to Tailgatenut and any other holier than thou fans that think they deserve a ticket at face value when things are looking good. Of course how many of them were buying tickets on the exchange during the Chiefs, Chargers, Titans and soon Vikings game at face value? Boy, i just started something good. I will use the Ticketmaster Exchange more if I can set the price. I dont mind if it goes to pay for future invoices for season tickets. Pay now or pay later. It should be cheaper than stubhub. BTW: Check out the exchanges now as TM has it mapped out per venue to give you a better idea what and where tickets are available.

This has to be good news as long as we are protected if someone acts up in our seats after buying the tickets through the NFL site. I have used my tickets every game this year but if I can't go and with 50,000 on the waiting list why not get what the brokers are getting ? The only time people sell tickets in quantity through the ticket exchange is when the weather is going to be bad (like the miserable weekend we had here last weekend). If I know I will be away why not lower my expense (especially since my seats are $250 a pair probably going to $300 after this season) BTW put me down for an early indication for Pats Chargers for next season depending on the schedule.
