Last hurrahs for Lynch?
Safety will decide in offseason if he will be returning
By Lee Rasizer, Rocky Mountain News (Contact)

Joe Mahoney / The Rocky

Broncos safety John Lynch, sitting on Chiefs running back Kolby Smith after a stop, said he's not sure if he will be back next season. "And I'm not avoiding the answer. I don't know myself. . . . I haven't made a decision either way," he said.

The future consumes John Lynch - as in the next two weeks.

The question of whether the Broncos safety will return for a 16th season will have to be put on the back burner for now because of those short-term concerns.

The overriding decision won't be an automatic, either way, once he sits down and discusses the matter with his family.

"Right now, the future for me is San Diego," said Lynch, referring to Monday night's game in his hometown against the Chargers, who have locked up the AFC West. "And I'm not avoiding the answer. I don't know myself. I promised myself I would play this year and kind of evaluate things at the end, and that's the only thing I can tell you. That's where I'm at. I haven't made a decision either way."

Lynch, 36, has treated the possible continuation of his career at this stage as an annual exercise since he hit a decade in the league. He has one season left on a three-year, $8.5 million deal.

In February 2006, when Lynch signed that pact, he commented he had "two to three really good years left," and that while playing two more seasons was definite, he admitted at the time, "the third one, I don't know." That uncertain period is upon him.

There will be several factors involved, including whether he and the team believe he's still playing at a consistently high level.

But the passion for the game hasn't died, Lynch said.

"It's still there," he said. "And guys always laugh at me after the game about that. But that's who I am. That hasn't left, I guarantee you that."

At the same time, Lynch has seen his playing time decrease this season. He has been removed in favor of Domonique Foxworth on obvious passing downs. And for a player who has participated in 99 percent of the defensive snaps the past two seasons, it has been a difficult adjustment.

"Believe me, I don't like that," Lynch said. "But I guess everything factors into the decision. That's why I have to step back at the end of the season. It's emotional."

One of the other criteria figures to be how close Lynch feels the Broncos are to contending for the Super Bowl. At various points this season, he has believed the team has turned the corner only to see the performance turn consistently inconsistent. But he also never has doubted, and still doesn't, the organization's commitment to adding personnel, even though "people can argue the point of whether what they went out and got was effective"last offseason.

"It's hard to gauge where this team's at," Lynch said. "But this organization not making the playoffs for two years, it happens a lot of places but not here. . . . And they're going to do everything they can to get this turned around."

All the uncertainty from an overall team perspective seemingly makes it even more important the Broncos keep a solid locker- room presence in Lynch to maintain stability.

"It's funny because I don't know and I don't think he knows," cornerback Champ Bailey said of his friend's looming decision. "I hope I'm one of the first people he tells because it's been special to be able to play with him. Whatever he does, I wish him the best and I hope he comes back."

Bailey came to Denver with Lynch in 2004 with designs on a Super Bowl ring that so far has proven elusive.

"I know he wants to walk away from the game on his terms and not due to injury or anything . . . ," Bailey said. "But the guy's still got a lot left in the tank."

A neck injury Lynch suffered in the first quarter Oct. 29 against Green Bay "spooked" the safety, given his history that included a 2003 surgery to remove neck spurs. But it turned out to only be a pinched nerve. And his health moving forward shouldn't be an issue in terms of the decision-making process, although Lynch promised to immediately step away from the game the next time he hurts his neck.

Still, "I've been back on the field and fine," he said.

And, he noted, his wife, Linda, won't stand in his way, whatever he decides.

"My wife's good to me like that. She lets me make those decisions," he said. "So I'm going to play my (butt) off the next two weeks, and then sit back and make a good decision."

The Broncos almost certainly will be in the market for another safety. Hamza Abdullah, a third- year pro subbing for the injured Nick Ferguson, has shown promise and should be a favorite for a starting job. Ferguson is a free agent. And Foxworth is a cornerback by trade playing out of position by necessity.

"I don't want to see John leave . . . ," cornerback Dre Bly said, adding he recognizes the difficulty of the decision Lynch is facing. "I don't know what he's leaning toward. But whatever decision he makes, he's had a heck of a career. He's a Hall of Famer to me. He's won a Super Bowl, played in Pro Bowls wherever he's been. And he's made a name for himself in this league. That's what I want to be known for every time I step out on the field."

The thing that pisses me off about this is that last year we could have just stayed put and drafted Reggie Nelson from Florida but as the FO described it, "we weren't willing to draft anybody that wasn't going to be able to crack our rotation this next year at safety."

What a short sided comment and I'm sure Sunquist will put a nice little spin on that reason for www.denverbroncos.com. Anyways, half way through the season Lynch is injured and Ferguson is sitting on the bench and we're wondering who our future starters are going to be at the safety spot, meanwhile Jarvis Moss played 4 or 5 games, was inactive a bunch and got knocked out for the season with an injury.

He's not a stupid man. I don't think he's ever hurt for money. I remember being bussed in from San Marcos High School to play at Torrey Pines...and it was sweet. One of the few home gyms we didn't have security walk us into the gym. Then again...Torrey Pines isn't in the early '90's Avocado league.

With a guy like Lynch...you just take him at his word. If he shows up...he's good to go. He won't hang on too long.

If he's done...well...he owns a pretty sh!tty sports talk radio station with his old man here in San Diego.

This was my exact recollection after the draft and i knew at that point in time that Sunny and Shanny were just talking out their asses to try and justify why they neglected the need at safety...

Jarvis was really coming on strong when he was playing. Our Rookie Defensive Linemen look impressive.

I think we need to look for 2 new safety's for next year. This year of rebuilding may have turned Lynch off on the third year.

Mike - Look into your crystal ball and tell me which of the following players will not be with the Broncos next year: Javon Walker, Travis Henry, Dre' Bly, Ian Gold, Ben Hamilton, John Lynch, Todd Sauerbrun. Out of the seven, I say at least four are gone. Your thoughts?
-- Matt Heitner, San Jose, Costa Rica
Matt - From your list of seven, Bly is the most certain to return. The Broncos have roughly a $10 million commitment to him in 2008. Now that Henry has won his legal battle, it appears his contract locks him up for $6 million for next year, although there may be some escape clauses.
The Broncos want Lynch back, and I think Lynch wants to play one more. Finances will definitely come into play for Walker, Gold and Hamilton. All are scheduled to make decent money next year and all will be coming off injury-plagued seasons. Each could come back next year, but at reduced rates.

I was hoping Denver would draft a young safety and have Lynch mentor him. That didn't happen last year, and it would be a shame if the window is closed with a Lynch retirement.

I think Abdulah was starting to play better then Lynch anyway. I still would draft some competition at that spot late in the draft to see what you see. No way do I hit that spot early. I would not mind drafting OL, LB and DL only in this draft. You have to win the battle in the middle first and quite honestly, we lost several games from bad line play.

We can all hope but I would say that you are more confident in that than I am.

Moss got severly injured twice in practice last season and we don't even run the most physical practices. I'm highly skeptical of him but hoping for the best. I would have much rather stuck with our pick at 21 last year, drafted Nelson, drafted Crowder and took Marcus Thomas with our 3rd round pick that we traded.

I don't think Nelson would have lasted to 21.. Jacksonville would've just taken him at 17. Thats was their guy all along. As long as Jacksonville was ahead of us... He would have been off the board. That being said... I was actually at the draft..and was SEVERELY disappointed that we traded up for Moss.

Abdullah.

Abdullah is great, but the reality is that he'll be MIA for a full month every season. No NFL player has successfully managed Ramadan -- the physical demands of the game are just too demanding.

I wanted Reggie like a lot of other ppl. I don't know of any other safeties coming out this year besides Phillips, but we need one. Abdullah's already starting and we need somebody to replace Lynch. i hope if John comes back, Shanny realizes that he's basically finished and is in his last year. I don't think Lynch wants to go out on a season like this.

Was going to bring up what BPC said, but as always - he's on top of things.

Love Lynch, but he should retire.

Force Denver into doing something good at the position. Get a guy early on Day 2, draft Myron Rolle next year. Safeties next year will actually be great. . . so yeah. Maybe 2009 for a high pick, but it needs to be addressed.

A really good saftey can be had they are not that hard to find ! a Really good DE is damn near imposible to find . I Know you are not happy with Moss but I will give him more time than the games he played in to call him a bust .

You keep brining this up, and now you've changed your argument to just NFL players to make this argument. Hakeem Olajuwon played for 18 years in the NBA. He observed Ramadan throughout his NBA career. He had games every other day rather than once a week.

http://nationofislamsportsblog.blogspot.com/2007/10/ramadan-fasting-and-introspection-key.html

Denver Broncos' safety Hamza Abdullah feels that his performance over the years has been best during Ramadan.

“I have had some of my best games during Ramadan,” Abdullah, a 24-year-old safety, said in an interview. “I got my first and only interception while I was fasting.”

Perhaps the highest performing Muslim athlete of recent years was Hakeem Olajuwon.

“When your stomach is full, you get tired and lazy and too relaxed,” said Olajuwon, who retired from the Houston Rockets in 2002. “You get tremendous energy from fasting. Everything is crisp. When your stomach is empty, you get a lot of oxygen and you can breathe.”

I never called him a bust. I have a feeling that there is a bust factor there with all of his injuries and the fact that he has had problems gaining weight and he already got injured twice last season, both times at practice. Do we even run physical practices?

I'm hopeful that he is the next Jason Taylor. Then again, i'm also realistic. We could have watched Elvis progress, started Crowder at the strong DE spot and drafting a free safety who has great ball skills, something this secondary has lacked to take pressure off of Champ.

I just think the way we used our resources last draft was poor. Now we still need a safety, we don't know what we have in Moss and are without a 3rd round pick this season.

Cut him some slack. It's not easy for him to switch gears and attempt to literally make his first post in weeks that isn't solely focused on bashing Shanny.

Abdullah missed that open field tackle that would of forced a punt at the houston game, i hope john comes back for one more year though with the broncos maybe not close to being a superbowl contender and that his playing time as diminish may make him not want to come back, its cool that champ and dre want him to come back

Lynch's retirement has been on my mind since he suffered his neck "stinger" injury in the GB game.

I vividly remember Lynch saying he will play as long as he has the passion, and is NOT being taken off the field thus being just a situational player- which he is now........
