ALAMEDA – Lane Kiffin probably thought Atlanta Falcons coach Bobby Petrino resigning Tuesday to take the Arkansas job officially would end speculation Kiffin wanted the job.
Wrong.
Reports on Wednesday had Kiffin angry he didn't get the job. One said Kiffin was so upset that he slammed doors and cursed.
Then again, he might have just watched film of Sunday's 38-7 loss at Green Bay.
So Kiffin again addressed what he thought he was done talking about two weeks ago.
"I never had any contact with the University of Arkansas, or any college about any job at all," Kiffin said Wednesday. "I've done nothing but prepare my team for the upcoming game."
Kiffin said Raiders public relations director Mike Taylor told him of the reports Wednesday. Kiffin gained most of his coaching experience as an assistant at USC from 2001 to '06 but said he has no desire to return to the college ranks.
"No, no," Kiffin said. "I'm coaching the Raiders and getting us ready to play. I don't have any idea where all that information came from."
First up – Kiffin said "unless something drastically changes," Josh McCown would start at quarterback Sunday against Indianapolis with JaMarcus Russell playing at some point.
Quarterback Daunte Culpepper (quadriceps) didn't practice. The only other players not practicing because of injury were center Jake Grove (knee) and safety Jarrod Cooper. Cooper was at team headquarters Wednesday on crutches and with a brace on his right leg. He's out for the season because of a knee injury but hasn't been placed on injured reserve.
Starters given the day off were defensive tackle Warren Sapp, tackle Barry Sims, center Jeremy Newberry and wide receiver Jerry Porter. Starting running back Justin Fargas (ribs) practiced.
Toys before the game – Fans coming to Sunday's game are encouraged to bring a new, unwrapped toy valued at $20 or more for the Toys for Tots program.
Members of the United States Marine Corps Reserve will be at the West Side Plaza, near the BART entrance and Gates A, B, C and D to collect the toys.
