Three-time Pro Bowl fullback Lorenzo Neal, the lead blocker for San Diego Chargers' star tailback LaDainian Tomlinson, will be sidelined indefinitely after fracturing his right fibula in Sunday's overtime victory against the Tennessee Titans.

A 15-year veteran, Neal sustained the injury early in the fourth quarter.

The Chargers (8-5), who lead the AFC West by two games, are likely to conduct more tests on Neal, but might delay placing him on injured reserve to see if he can recover in time for the playoffs. The fibula is the smaller of the two major bones in the leg and, since it is not a weight-bearing bone, surgery is not necessary and recovery times can sometimes be relatively short.

"I know he's a little bit older, but hopefully he can recover like a young man," Tomlinson said of his escort.

Neal, 36, has never carried more than 30 times in a season, but has been the lead blocker for 11 straight 1,000-yard rushers. He is known for being able to tie up linebackers in the run game and is also solid in pass protection.

The former Fresno State standout has appeared in 224 games in stints with New Orleans (1993-96), the New York Jets (1997), Tampa Bay (1998), Tennessee (1999-2000), Cincinnati (2001-2002) and San Diego (2003-2007).

In 15 seasons, Neal has carried 214 times for 782 yards and six touchdowns. He also has 192 receptions for 1,051 yards and 12 touchdowns.

chargers have been a very fortunate team.

they never seem to have had serious injuries as of late (till now obviously).

Shoot, Dallas, SD, Green Bay, and New England haven't had any injuries what so ever.

SD - linebackers and DL have had injury issues all season

Green Bay - on thier 3rd string RB

NE- Lost a Rosevelt Colvin for the season

Rosevelt Colvin? Seymour missed the first 6 games also. Dallas has had to do without Terry Glenn so far this season.

I think our biggest problem in the free agent market is these guys come here and don't drink enough water

That really sucks. I think he is the best pure fullback left in the NFL.

:Broncos:

He has had a down year with regards to run blocking. That and the fact that I always freak out whenever I see him try to catch a ball. But the guy is such a great veteran presence. He's going to be on the sidelines cheering the guys on even after being placed on IR.

I can see him being in the media more once his career is over. The guy just knows how to talk to people. He's like Lynch in that regard.

I gotta admit. I enjoyed watching him play (except against the Broncos). Neal, Strong, Sam Gash and of course Howard Griffith....all guys that would just obliterate LBs every single play. Karney is probably the only other guy I've seen do that on a fairly consistent basis recently.

I'd really like to see the Broncos spend a late pick next April on a true blocking FB in that mold.

Vickers in Cleveland is really good, too.

I know right. I am sick of these converted RB's play fullback

Has Vickers been doing good? There were a lot of people here that really wanted him.

Neal is one of my favorite rival players. I think he is a great FB. I hate to see good guys go down like that.

Bummer. Hope he can make it back. He is one player I always wished was a Bronco.

I forgot she was out. What did she hurt again?

Bummer about Neal. He's a great player. Wish he were a Bronco
