SAN FRANCISCO -- Authorities believe the death of a San Francisco 49ers fan at Monster Park was accidental and took place when the man misjudged a leap on the the upper concourse.

The unidentified fan died Sunday after falling 20 feet from an upper concourse level ramp, police said.

The 31-year-old man took a break from the game with about 2:30 left in the first half and went to the exterior of the stadium to hang out on a ramp between sections 7 and 5, said San Francisco police Sgt. Neville Gittens.

Police said he climbed up to sit on a ramp wall but misjudged the wall and plummeted 20 feet to the mezzanine level, landing on his head.

Paramedics pronounced the man dead at the scene, Gittens said.

The man has not yet been identified, but he is not a San Francisco resident, Gittens said.

Authorities said it was the first death at Monster Park -- formerly known as Candlestick Park -- since two fans fell to the death in the 1980s.

One of those fatalities was a man who attempted to ride a dumpster down the concourse and the second when a fan tumbled on a rainy day from the upper deck while booing then manager Frank Robinson following a San Francisco Giants loss to the Atlanta Braves.

Assuming you are a friend of this guy and you accompanied him to the game......how would you go about explaining that death to the family?

and the second when a fan tumbled on a rainy day from the upper deck while booing then manager Frank Robinson following a San Francisco Giants loss to the Atlanta Braves.

Did we really have to know that he was booing the manager at the time? Was that somehow relevant to his death?

Doesn't surprise in the least bit that happened at Candlestick. I remember old Mile High had some places going up the ramp to the upper deck that freaked me out.

Seriously, the ridiculously steep upper decks of some of these new stadiums, with everyone vying to be the place where you "sit closer to the action", really have me wondering how people don't take spills all the time. Alcohol + 75% inclines + jumping up and down seems like a recipe for disaster....yet accidents are extremely rare.

I went up to see my seats in the upper level of Mile High last year, and to be honest there's no damn way I would sit up there without safety gear or being tied to a mountain goat:spit:

No doubt. The old ramps used to get all slick and felt as if they were made of 1/8" thick sheet metal.
But they did rumble like hell after the game!

Did anyone ever die from a fall or accident at Mile High? Old or new? I've never heard of that happening.

I went to a Buffalo Sabres game in the Buffalo Auditorium and saw numerous people fall down stairs because of the steep incline. I understand why the tickets have the disclaimers on them. going down the steps is unnerving especially after throwing back a few brews

I went to the second Tyson/Bruno fight and many of the British fans were totally disrespectful during the playing of the Star Spangled Banner. One prick was running up and down the aisles waving a Union Jack. At least he was until someone tripped him. He bounced down the cement steps like a paint can thrown out a car window on the freeway. I don't think there were any fatalities, but I nearly died laughing.

You explain to his family that your son was a complete drunk moron and died driving a vehicle more unsafe than a Hyundai Excel. The booing is important because in order to boo correctly, you need to lean back and with your hand making a funnel at your mouth and cock forward with the "boooooooo". He apparantly was a newbie at this and lunged too forward and went tumbling over the railing. It sounded like , "boooooo....... F@$*# ... damn you Robin.....(splat)". I imagine he threw his back out right before he went over the railing. This is a lesson to you cheapos that buying 500 level can cause death. If you aren't sitting in 100 level, you are risking your life. Even you AK in your posh Club level.
