View Full Version : Stokely Gets Extension
The Broncos have rewarded receiver Brandon Stokley with a three-year contract extension, according to a source close to the situation.
Stokley, 31, has 39 catches for 614 yards and four touchdowns this season. He signed a one-year contract in March as a free agent.
He moved into the starting lineup when No. 1 receiver Javon Walker went down with a knee injury and was forced to miss seven games.
Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
The new deal developed quickly today. The two sides had talked in previous weeks about a possible extension but had decided to table discussions until the offseason.
However, because of Stokley's strong contributions in recent weeks the Broncos decided to secure his rights.

I know Brandon has played very well, but I think the reason they decided they had to lock him up now is the possibility of Javon not being healthy again/not coming back next year...jmo

Good news! Holy crap! We haven't had any good news 'round these parts in some time.
If nothing else, he can definitely be an effective 3rd down receiver for the next three years. Cutler trusts him on the field... looks for him. We need that.
All we need is Javon to get healthy and get a little bit more speed on this team at WR.

It's more about what he brings to the table.
The guy is clutch 3rd down guy.
He's a great slot receiver and that hard to find in today's NFL.
He's a team guy. Not a prima looking for the rock on every play.
He's a player that helped Manning grow and can do the same thing for Jay-C.
That's why he got an extension. Javon's injury and future have less to do with this contract.

What free agent WR's might be available this offseason who are worth looking at?

Congrats to Stokely.
This was well deserved!!!!
Though i fear it may mean Javon's career is done with.
Poor Javon, this man WAS our offense in 2006....
His last great game in the NFL, when he dominated the Steelers in the AFC Champ revenge game.
I pray im wrong, but i doubt it.
If it is the end, Javon, thanks for 2006 man.

Last time I checked Rod was on Reserved/Injured, not Reserved/Retired. If Javon can't go, it wouldn't surprise me to see Rod out on the field.
No need to break the bank for a WR in FA.

What's the cap hit if Javon Walker is released? I don't think he's done, but maybe they don't feel like paying him that much money when Brandon Marshall is tearing it up?

Rod is on the Physically unable to perform list. That says more to me than anything. IMHO Rod will probably play preseason and bow out to go out in fans eyes. It has nothing to do with desire to play Rod wants to be on the field, it has everything to do with his hip replacement.

Rod was playing injured the entire 2006 season. Still caught 52 passes. If he comes back, I expect him to get those steps back.

there is no "stud" WR in this draft that will even warrant being selected at the broncos spot let alone trading up for anyone....

Why do you feel Walker is done? He's been back on the field now and there has been nothing conclusive about any damage done to the knee.
Right now it's more likely than not he will come back @ 100%

his situation is eerily familiar to T.D's.
Comes back one week, gone for a prolonged period of time.
Whenever hes in the game now , its awkward and just doesnt feel right.
If hes not able to start, he shouldnt be out there. He should be on IR rehabbing for next season.

Well he did take a very nasty shot to the knee early in the season, but according to Wabbit there was no structural damage to the knee shown in the MRI. Basically it was just extremely painful swelling that lingered for awhile.

but from all accounts, the swelling seems to be reoccuring anytime Javon engages in football or football related activities.

Truely good news on the Stokely extension.
As for Walker, he took a shot...maybe a couple of direct hits on the knee in the Oakland game (game 2 early this season), but this was AFTER twisting the knee badly in the Buffalo game.
Even so, by all reports, there was no further structural damage to knee.
I know these guys would never, ever endanger their contract by admitting they're not going to ever be the same, but I think Walker knows the coaching staff is very conerned and will be watching him intently these last 4 games.
If he shows only marginal signs of improvement, you do have to wonder what the off-season holds for him...I know he would be very resistant, if not altogether unwilling to accept a major pay cut.
Damned, damned shame. He was, and maybe (hopefully) still is the guy that could make this offense special.

His cap number for 2008 is at a relatively low 2.1m right now so there really isnīt that much money to cut.

Well you all got what you wanted then right? People have been saying he was a priority in FA next yr for us. I see him more as a role player and still feel we need to add a WR because we don't know about Walkers knee.
I'm not saying we need to draft one first round or anything, but I don't think that position is done having players added to it at this point.

His cap number for 2008 is at a relatively low 2.1m right now so there really isnīt that much money to cut.
Javon basically signed a 5 year $40m contract extension last season with $10.7m up front in terms of bonuses.
If you include his up-front bonuses and base salaries until 2011 it comes to $31.55m so there's still $8.5m unaccounted for.
If none of that $8.5m is within 2008 payroll year then his cap hit for 08 would be around the $4.2m mark. Releasing him would mean a minimum of $8.5m approx immediately accelerating into the 2008 cap.
If push comes to shove we could do a Wilsonesque move and push the majority of the hit into 2009 ($5.7m) and take a $2.8m hit this year.
Problem is no-one knows where that other $8.5m hits. Hopefully it's roster/option bonuses at the back-end of the deal that aren't prorated.
