Sam Adams (Post file)On a day the Broncos won an important off-field battle, they continued to retool a defensive line that has been ever-changing since the offseason.

Overshadowed by running back Travis Henry winning his appeal of a one-year NFL drug suspension, the Broncos cut starting defensive tackle Sam Adams. He started 11 games, including Sunday at Oakland, and had 17 tackles. Adams came to the Broncos in June after he was cut by Cincinnati. Denver also cut cornerback Jeff Shoate, a fifth-round draft pick in 2005.

The Broncos are expected to elevate rookie Steven Harris from the practice squad to replace Adams and to sign free agent Marviel Underwood, recently cut by Green Bay, to replace Shoate. The team also is expected to sign defensive tackle Michael Bozeman on the practice squad to replace Harris. Bozeman, from Mississippi, had previously been with Atlanta. These moves could happen as soon as today.

The Broncos signed Adams, 34, because he fit new defensive boss Jim Bates' system. But the team has adjusted the defense throughout this trying season and Adams wasn't much of a factor. He signed a one-year deal with a $1 million salary and a small signing bonus.

After being called into meet with coaches Tuesday, Adams said he was not upset by the team's decision.

"My time in Denver was awesome," Adams said. "I played for six teams and this was one of my favorite spots. Coach Mike Shanahan is one of the best men I've worked for, and I've loved it here. I wish the Broncos the best of luck in every game they played except when they play my new team."

Adams is subject to a waiver claim today and it wouldn't be a surprise if a playoff-caliber team pursues him.

"I will be playing soon, I know that," Adams said. "That shouldn't be a problem."

Denver cut three players in one day last month and also cut defensive end Simeon Rice last month. After signing veterans in the offseason, it is clear the Broncos are leaning on their young defensive linemen. The release of Adams means Marcus Thomas, Kenny Peterson and Alvin McKinley will all play more inside.

Denver worked out six defensive linemen Tuesday with several having NFL experience: Dave Ball, Joe Salavea, Junior Siavi, Nic Clemons, Julian Jenkins and Keyonta Marshall.

I agree, after already mumbling his discontent, I think he took the high road here. Maybe he sees himself playing for Dungy in the near future...

these are good moves Denver is signing a bunch of young players. See what they got and if they should be resigned for 2008.

He doesn't really fit the Colts scheme. I honeslty don;t see any team really going after him unless theres a team that beat up yet still marginal enough to think he will help in a "outside chance" playoff push.

Not surprised with Denver "officially" out of it, lets get the youngsters some playing time!

I like the move, go young and see if you can find a guy like Abdula for Dline.

I prefer to see Thomas start and get reps for rest of year!

Next year should be better.

I've heard Adams on talk shows in the past and have always thought he's a class act. This seals the deal for me.

Good luck Sam..

One good thing to come out of this is we no longer have to hear the announcers give the token Sam Adams weight comments: "350? That must've been what he weighed before Thanksgiving dinner."

Like they were saying something original.....got old real fast.

At least we don't have to worry about him lining up or Jumping offsides anymore!

Technically, Denver isn't "officially" out of it, but I'll give you a B-I-N-G and the "O" isn't too far off.

Because I think that's exactly what the Broncos are doing.

Sam's head is way too small for his body, it looks a grape sitting on his shoulders. With that being said, I'm sure he'll land with a playoff team soon. Good luck big Sam!

Sam is a great guy, but it was really like playing with 10 guys on the field. He could control only one gap, and that was straight ahead. Very easy to game plan, let him penetrate with a scrape and move to a linebacker, which also caused Ian gold to dissapear.

Why not he gets to keep his bonus and now move on to a team maybe going to playoffs, or take rest of year of and eat. Either way he's happy.

Ya... I had long ago got the feeling that Adams felt like he wasn't fitting well here. Best of luck to him, although my suspicion is that his football career is done. Time to hit that treadmill:)

Why would Adams be upset? His salary was guaranteed, and he probably wasn't going to hit any incentive bonuses. Now he gets to sit or sign for more.
