Shanahan Fireside: Week 13
1:15 P.M. MST: Waiting on the start of Head Coach Mike Shanahan’s press conference … It’s likely to be an interesting one, considering the situation in which the team finds itself right now. The locker room late Sunday afternoon was understandably moribund; it reminded me of another scene in the same room five years earlier, after a 28-16 loss to the Raiders gave the Broncos their seventh loss (in Week 16) and took control of their playoff path from their hands. But the Broncos did rally to win the following game soundly against Arizona seven days later, for what it’s worth.

1:29 P.M. MST: “Who would like to start it off?”
1:30 P.M. MST: Of Selvin Young: “It’s hard to tell before we get back on the (practice) field.” Said that he would get more into the injuries on Wednesday.
1:30 P.M. MST: When asked what he would most like to see out of the team in the next four games: “Wins.”
1:31 P.M. MST: On the run defense’s performance at Oakland: “It’s a combination — it just takes one person being out of position, one person missing a tackle. That’s what run defense is … Since the bye week, that was not one of our better games (defending the run).”
1:31 P.M. MST: More on the run defense: “Obviously, we’d like to be playing better than we’ve been playing … We did some good things, but you’ve got to be consistent.”
1:32 P.M. MST: “Anytime you give up 4-for-5 in the red zone, 80 percent touchdown ratio, that’s not good … we all know that’s common sense football; it doesn’t take a genius.”
1:33 P.M. MST: “We’ll see what we’re made of. It’s tough in this league not to win. You go through some very tough times, some very tough moments, but we’ve got the character to fight through it and hopefully we’ll start this Sunday against Kansas City.”
1:34 P.M. MST: “Our game plan going in was not to play Travis (Henry) that much; I thought it might come back to haunt us and it did … We gave him the ball too many times.”
1:35 P.M. MST: On Jim Bates and his defense and having faith in it: “That’s really a good question. As soon as there’s a little adversity, it all comes back to the coach … At this point I’m disappointed in myself. … I don’t worry about Jim Bates or the offensive and defensive coaches.”
1:36 P.M. MST: “We’re going to play to win,” Shanahan said when the possibility of playing young players this month.
1:37 P.M. MST: Shanahan said he still hasn’t heard anything regarding Henry’s appeal of a potential suspension.
1:37 P.M. MST: “I’m not frustrated (it’s taken so long for a decision).”
1:38 P.M. MST: “Any time you lose, it’s really tough, especially when you’re used to winning, it’s tough.”
1:39 P.M. MST: Said Javon Walker improved from his game at Chicago, playing 20-25 plays. “He does look better.” Shanahan added it was “hard to say” whether Walker would be back to his former full-time workload by the end of the regular season.
1:39 P.M. MST: When asked whether this was like the 1999 6-10 season, Shanahan said, “Let’s wait until the end of the season before we make this a losing season.”
1:41 P.M. MST: On whether the Broncos still had a shot at the division title: “Sure, we’ll have to get a little luck in there and play much better than we’ve been playing … I think we need to worry about playing a complete football game before we worry about the playoffs.”
1:41 P.M. MST: And … we’re out.
