My dang threads always have a way of going to places I never put them. Even though people are enjoying good and profitable community discussions. Hmmmm.

I'll get more creative this time.

Sorry,
After a disappointing loss, I have to think about other things. I was shopping for Mike Shanahan's Christmas present yesterday and need to make a decision. I thought I would ask those "in the know." Like Pat Bowlen.

I am going to buy a high def DVD player for a Broncos player like Selvin Young and am choosing between Blu-Ray and HD DVD. Comp USA has an incredible deal on Blu-Ray ($300 discount + free movie in box + five other free movies by mail). I am very tempted to buy it. I still have a few questions. That I would like to ask someone as knowledgeable as Bobby Turner.

1. Does anyone own one or the other? As a Broncos Fan, How do you like it?

2. Is one of the two formats "winning?" I don't want a BetaMax. Nor do I want to be like the Raiders.

3. Any other deals out there that you have seen that will beat this deal? Like getting Brandon Marshall in the fourth round.

Thanks in advance... To all my fellow Broncos fans having a Broncos discussion about Broncos High Def DVD's

I love watching the Broncos Complete History DVD all the time!

But, at this point in time, picking one format to watch Broncos DVDs on is premature. The format war is still very much up for grabs.

If you absolutely want one, I'd shell out the money for a dual format DVD player, which plays both HDDVD and Blu Ray.

Other than that, I'd suggest perhaps buying a regular DVD player with upscale capabilities.

Somebody else in Broncos Nation maybe can help you more, but that's my 2 cents.

If Shanny were shopping for a good DVD player, he'd buy a broken BetaMax and then hold a post-shopping press conference explaining how he chose the device based on its tremendous potential, and how the upside was worth the risk.

No wait, that's his draft strategy. Sorry.

(Seriously, though, Blu-Ray is reportedly the better technology, but sadly isn't expected to win out in the marketplace. Apparently HDDVD will. My only advice is to buy a DIVX compatible player, so you can play DVDs you burn with downloaded movies.)

You might just want to wait until the dual format players come down in price (IIRC they're around $1200 right now) and buy that for Selvin - then you don't have to worry about buying Ryan Leaf when Peyton Manning is still on the board.

(Shanny will make sure) HD DVD will win out.

I promise you.

What if mike wanted a really really really good hamburger where should he go? and do they have a valet that can handle a jaguar with a stick?

Thanks ahead Mike Shanahan

LG is currently making a dual format player. It might cost a lot, but Pat Bowlen wouldn't notice.

Blu-ray is better in terms of resolution, but without a 1080p display, you wouldn't be able to see take advantage of this, and if your TV has poor down-conversion capability, it could even look worse than HD-DVD.

Al Davis and Microsoft like HD-DVD, but only because Sony is pimping the other one. Something about the opportunity to screw a nemesis seems to drive irrationality.

A winner will emerge eventually, but, by waiting, you may be missing out on an enjoyable experience right now, something Shanahan loaths, so I would encourage you not to dally too long.

When addressing a need, Ted Sundquist says "shotgun the hell out of the position and one of them will hit," he took Paymah and Foxworth with Darrent Williams, and he took Crowder and Moss to pair up his Dumervil, methinks you should take a Blu-ray and a HD-DVD player in one, cause someone's going to come out on top and it might as well be you!

I was just going to say you should get one of those dual format players.

Oh, and sprint right option and such.

Shanny told me just last night that he believes he is only one or two blu ray DVDs away from having the most complete collection in the world.

I also heard that if Mike Shanahan hadn't had so many unexpected mechanical failures with his Blu Ray player this year, he would be competing for a division title and maybe a championship of the HD DVD world.

Let's hope he can find a few good repairmen in the offseason or NFL draft.

Jim Bates is notorious for trying to play HD DVDs in Blu Ray players.

Blu-Ray is pretty much stomping out HD-DVD in terms of disc sales. I believe Blu-Ray holds 65% of the weekly sales of "hi def" DVDs and there's no reason to believe this will change.

There's only one major studio who is HD-DVD exclusive, a few who are Blu-Ray exclusive, while all the rest release for both. I honestly can't see how the last HD-DVD studio (Univseral) can remain exclusive for long.

The format war won't be over for awhile, but as it stands now, Blu-Ray is the clear leader.

Stay away from dual format players. They are terrible and will only hurt hi-def DVDs in the future.

Edit: Crap, I think I missed the joke.

Regular DVD play at 480p. It's really not worth an out of control investment for a player at this time. At leadt that's what Rick Dennison says

Actually it's a covert thread for Broncos fans so that it doesn't get bumped to Jibba Jabba again. That was a travesty to the entire Broncos organization.

Once again, thanks for your playcalling, it has helped me to make the right decisions about the future of the team. Wink, wink. I am now feeling that Blu-Ray is the smart decision for any aspiring armchair QB's.

Here's a question.

If Shanahan wanted to get, say, Hoosiers - you know, to fire up the team, and stuff. But he wouldn't want to show them anything but the best - none of this 480p, 3-on-the-floor, 220-221-whatever-it-takes DVD crap. So, can you even rent Blu-Ray or hi-def DVDs? Or do you just have to buy them?

I bought a PS3 for my super-duper home theater room - mainly for the blu-ray. Well, since I don't own any blu-ray DVDs, that thing is just gathering dust.

Also, if Shanahan had, like me, bought a PS3 - to show the team blu-ray DVDs, and stuff. Well, let's say he put the PS3 in an equipment closet, so as to avoid making Dove Valley all cluttered, and all that. Well, would there be any way to control said PS3 with a universal remote? Or would he just have to buy a wireless PS3 remote, and use that?

I think if I understand the logistics in the film room at Dove Valley correctly, I would say you could rent Broncos game film in Blu Ray from either Blockbuster or Netflix. So, look for Hoosiers there.

Unfortunately, I beliieve that the Broncos organization is telling me that the only drawback of the PS3 route is that remotes are bluetooth, and therefore, can't be controlled by a standard universal remote that uses infrared. That really pissed off more than one coach that didn't know it before it drafted Mr. PS3 in the first round. Otherwise, PS3 is a great player.

Yeah, that is a bit of a pain in the buttocks. I've read Shanahan hates remote clutter. I bet he wouldn't go the PS3 route again, if he wasn't into video games (which he isn't). My, um, his son, Kyle, already has a Wii, a PS2, and several Nintendo DSs. The last thing he needs is one more video game console.

I dunno. I think I'll wait out the last 5 minutes of the 4th quarter, and stick with my Vinny Testaverde VHS.

I know at least one NFL referee that can't tell the difference between a Vinny Testaverde VHS player and a blu ray player.
