They're not defunct, but to go with the flavor of the week, the Chicago Bears started out as the Decatur Staleys.

Decatur Stayles suck then and they suck now. My Father in law is so old that he grew up as a Chicago Cardinals fan. Now he lives in Arizona and can probably brag that he is the longest tenure of the Cardinals franchise!
That is a pretty cool little story broncocalijohn.
Man looking over that history of season records of the Cardinals it is amazing how bad that team has been for so long. Only 2 playoff wins in 87 years. The trail of destruction is brutal.
My boy Coryell stands out though as the only brief era of any success.
Thanks for this site. There is some great stuff on there.
How about them Dayton Triangles. They had to be the worst team in history.
1923 1-6-1 Only scored 16 points all season and one touchdown.
1925 0-7 -1 Started the season with a scoreless tie. Only scored 3 points all year.
1927 1-6-1 Scored only 15 points the whole season. I think all field goals. They may have missed an extra point.
1928 0-7 Scored only 9 points, gave up 143. Scored all 9 points in one game.
1929 0-7 The season they finally pulled the plug. Only one touchdown all year. Outscored 136-7.
In the 7 year stretch between 1923 and 1929 they went 5-42-4 and were outscored 733 to 110. They were shutout in 33 of those games or in other words in 64% of their games.
But '23 and '24 were kind of good years.
Looking at the 5 years between 1925 and 1929 they went 2-30-3 and were outscored 490 to 49 with 26 shutouts. Shutout 74% of the time. Only scored one touchdown in 5 years.
Their offense is almost as potent as the 2007 Chiefs.

The Pottsville Maroons would have been the smallest community to play for an NFL championship (1925), but the league suspended them for playing a game against Notre Dame when another NFL game was going on in the same city. The franchise was handed over to the NFL.
Personally, I like the St. Louis Gunners.
