View Full Version : Special Teams - Food for thought

* The special teams finally have grasped the schemes installed by Scotty O'Brien. They have been helped, in particular, on the coverage units by the aggressive play of fullback Paul Smith busting the wedge and the sure tackling of new additions Jordan Beck and Andre Hall.
Beck, a linebacker, and Hall, a running back, have combined for nine of the team's 33 special- teams stops since the Oct. 21 win against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
"I feel like our special teams has good energy," Beck said.
The Broncos also have gone from ranking no higher than 21st in the four major return categories to no lower than sixth since the bye and have won the field-position battle five of the past six games.
Glenn Martinez's 80-yard punt-return touchdown on Monday has hoisted the Broncos to No. 1 in return average the past five weeks, and kickoff returners consistently have crossed the 30.

Also, regardless of what some have stated in this forum, Martinez's punt return was not totally negated by his fumble. Tennessee still had travel ~30 yds to get that TD. Not trying to excuse his fumble, but his TD /= his fumble.

I think people severely underestimate how long it takes to pick up a new process much less master it at the highest level of competition. I think Shanahan, Bates, and O'Brien are an incredible braintrust and with another draft, Cutler's progression, and healthy players this organization is in great shape. It kinda annoys me how everyone thinks the Broncos are the only team that will make plays out on the field. It's a battle. Football is a metaphor for war.....there will be losses on both sides. From the (online messageboard) fan's perspective, football is about alcoholism, bipolarity and perfectionism. I'm excited that we have players that can make plays...cuz that's what's really fun about watching football to me. I even like watching other teams' great players, like Adrian Peterson... that's just awesome stuff and good entertainment.

It also seems like Wilborn and Cargile are flying around a lot out there -- Mike Bell, too. Kudos to them.
I for 1 have noticed and am glad it has finally started to turn around. Keep up the great work guys!

If we lose this game it's going to be because of that guy...
And i know they like to throw it deep every once in a while so our corners can't be looking into the backfield every play. Benson is nothing special, so i'd like Champ to take the day off of Superman duty and JUST be the best corner in the game instead of the whole team's run defense.

ST's are a big deal. One-third of the game. ST's are gonna have to play well this game at Chicago, because the O and D may have a hard time.

Scott O'Brien is the man. He's a big reason for this turn around. Our offense hasn't had to go 90+ yards every drive. This game will be the real test to see how much he's changed things. After today we'll have played two of the best special teams in the country (Buffalo and Bears) in their house. The comparisons between week one and week twelve will be interesting.

cool, can scott o'brien coach defense?

Is there a reason why our RB's look like they would be better suited at LB? I think Cecil has more tackles than Gold this game.

Is this the most ironic thread in the history of the OrangeMane? If it isn't, which one is?

that food must taste strangely like feet.
1/3 of the team needs some serious work

Our special teams probably just cost us this game. Lets hope we win the toss.
