First I was amazed with his progress and then I wasn't. Ha!

He had a great block early and the punt return was special! The rest I have forgotten about.

Punt return for a TD. Fumble that led to titan TD. Wash in my opinion. Players make mistakes, TD on the punt return is enough to leave him alone.

Yeah...Shanahan sounded pretty pleased with the Punt return for a TD on the post game show...I think the fumble will be forgiven.

Good: Punt Ret for TD, Great Run Blocking
Bad: Dropped Pass, Muffed Punt, Saginaw State
- The guy has stepped up and plays like a backup...what more do you want when we're missing 2 starting WR's. I will admit that the muffed punt goes deep into Shanny's elephant memory and will end up killing him in the end. The great thing about Shanny is that he expects great things to happen and never forgets costly mistakes.

He probably got greedy which is something he needs to control. He needs to realize when to take the chance and when not too. Overall, it was nice to see special teams actually be somewhat special tonight.

I don't think he is a very talented player. The return was nice but also contained a couple really nice blocks and a punt that out kicked the coverage a bit. The muff is not excusable just because he made a play. You muff a couple punts and you are done as a punt returner. They just don't have very much patience in pro football for turnovers unless you are really talented.

He made a helluva block on the first (Stokley) TD, too. I think he has talent and it needs to continue to be coached up. He also had a nice grab that ended just short of the goalline. I like seeing the youngsters step up. He had success early and likely lost focus and got a little amped up. I'm looking forward to see what he can do the rest of the way.

+7 for the punt return TD; -7 for the muffed punt deep in our territory = a wash imo. He's a young player and will improve.

I just thought it was exciting to see a positive special teams play, a PR going the distance no less. Even the kick off returns are slowly getting better.

ten bucks says he never drops another punt. the pain of failing the team is worse than the pain of getting clocked waiting for a punt to drop. Lesson learned.

No love for the block that sprung Stokely's td? He had a great game sans the fumble and I expect we won't see too much of that. First TD on a return since Rod was doing them years ago. Thank you, Scott O'Brien.

Minus the fumble, he would have been the player of the game for me. He had an amazing block that allowed Stokely to get into the endzone and that PR was huge in us taking control of this game.

Unfortunately he gave it back later.

Yeah, so it is just me and Kahn who think that finally showing some teeth on special teams was something we've been looking for all season?

I mean he's a young guy, so is it a massive shock that he's let his concentration slip after making such a big play? Not to excuse it but I just happen to think that on this occasion the positives do outweigh the negatives, and that's based on his play overall the last few games, not just today.

He'll learn from that fumble and in the end it didn't cost us the game. As long as he doesn't make a habit of it it will be forgotten

No, it's just not you two. The ST's have come a long way IMHO...so has the D

I have a hard time penalizing him so much to call it a wash. The TD outweighs the muff IMO because if the defense had actually stopped them after the muff and forced a field goal attempt, the muff would be pretty much a non-issue.....

The bad thing about the muff was it was a mental mistake across the board....why field without calling fair catch with a 17-pt lead (or whatever the lead was at the time)?

I hate to echo the ESPN announcers on that but there's no need to be a hero when your team is in control.

Overall he's pretty solid for his role -- which is #3/#4 WR and part-time PR....but, overall, I'm not sure he's better than Clark/Hixon/Morgan.

In related news.....when the camera panned over to Martinez and Rod talking on the sidelines after the punt return TD, Mrs. Bean immediately declared that Martinez was one of the five ugliest looking guys she has ever seen.

Certainly noteworthy given that she married me.

Well I'm just saying that I don't think he is that talented but I do think he plays really hard and with a lot of emotion. I just feel that without injuries you wouldn't be seeing much of him on the field. He does seem willing to block, but he did drop a pass and have a fumble that cost the team so it wasn't all that great.

Well, I think that TD Punt return was a big spark. Really amped the team...
It also put the defense to sleep.

As for the Muff...it gave the ball to Tennesee at our 25 ...Defense gave up the TD, not Martinez.

The dropped pass was bad , as it killed a drive...I think we would have gotten 6 there...so minus 3-4 points. In his defense, it was a FAST ball coming in low and in front...hard catch, but makeable. Receivers drop balls...look what happened to Young last night....without the drops we probably lose.

Anyone who wants to wash out a PR for a TD hasn't watched Denver STs over the last 5 years. Yeah, he got excited and wanted to make another return effort on a punt he should have fair caught. If he had mishandled a single kick other than that one since being given the opportunity, I might be worried. But he's shown more punt return ability than anyone since Darien Gordon, and to wash the first punt return for a TD in 4 years is lame, imo.

Anybody see the block by Paymah on that PR? I thought that made the play. The gunner up top went into motion to get speed and ran upfield on the snap, and paymah locked him up for a good 3 seconds. It wasn't a bone crushing hit, but it was a heck of an open field block, that I think made the return.

A punt return is to be commended more than a fumble should be scowled. He put us up by 2 TDs and virtually changed the landscape of the game early. He forced Vince Young to have to start thinking about winning the game with his arm. Despite a nice perforance by VY he once again proved reinforced people's beliefs that his passing ability is sub-par.

THis is kind of funny, because I've been tooting Martinez' horn for a couple weeks now to my friends and family. He had his least consistent game last night, but he did break off a nice return.

Up to last night he'd caught the balls thrown his way, put great energy into his punt returns, and made no major mistakes. In those veins he has been much better than Hixon, Morgan, and Clark, and in a small way has been a savior for the team as we couldn't find anyone servicable to fill the PR role and ably play #3 WR.

Last night was his spotlight game, some good some bad. The team overcame the bad, and actually getting points from the special teams was a weird and wonderful feeling.

It's a good thing he was only in the game for two plays, then. Makes it much easier to grade. :oyvey:

I like the guy. He's a gamer, a competitor. I was very happy to see him stay with the team after camp, because he blocks like a demon. This is the type of player I like to see on the team. There's lots of uses for a player that can block that well, is a gamer, has decent hands, has quickness and top-end speed.

Well it's obvious that he got cocky after the return for 6, and thought he could do it again. That's not good, you have got to use your head more.

But at the same time, teams win games with playmakers. And if he can be a playmaker on ST, I'll take the occasional mistake.

Getting overexcited is a far cry from getting cocky.
